I'm sure Shaw can find another scholarship donor to fund it if needed.  8)

Lol.  We do have 4-5 open

Re: Class of 2016 - socalstanfan1 - 03-22-2015

Still hoping all will work out with Costello, but the whole situation has raised some questions in my mind.

Does anyone know if Shaw's QB recruiting strategy (focus on one guy, emphasize that he is your top choice) is followed by any other coaches around the nation? Obviously, SC recruits multiple QBs.

I'm wondering about the wisdom of this approach.  If you land your #1 guy, well, great.  But if you don't, then you have lost some valuable time building relationships with other QBs (and, if you are still building them, even as you are focusing on #1, what message are you sending? Well, we like you almost as much as this other guy. Just hang on and wait a while).

I'm a big supporter of Shaw, but not particularly this approach to recruiting the QB position

Re: Class of 2016 - kuz - 03-22-2015

I don't see anything wrong with it. Other schools might offer a bunch of QBs at once, but either they're honest to the recruit and tell them where they are in the pecking order, or they lie and then have to deal with the consequences. I'm pretty sure USC did the former with Costello - I seem to remember him saying that USC weren't recruiting him as hard early on as they were going after Shea Patterson, but once Patterson made his mind up about going elsewhere USC were back on Costello hard.

I think Harbaugh had the problem of trying the latter approach with Kain Colter - Colter was committed but then Nottingham committed to Stanford too, and Colter basically was pushed out. I'd rather Stanford continue to recruit backup plans and just say that we like some other guy a little bit better right now, but if he goes elsewhere then we'll offer you immediately.

The worst situation is when an offer isn't committable. This happened with Brandon Dawkins a couple of years ago - Brian Kelly gave him an offer but then was holding out for a commitment from a higher ranked QB, so ND literally didn't answer Dawkins' phone calls when he was trying to commit to them. (Dawkins ended up at Arizona.) I hope we never hear about Shaw pulling crap like that.

Can we call him "Gitno" ?

Of course either of the first two situations you describe are offers that aren't committable - or in actuality not offers at all. But it is at least better when that is made clear to the kids.

In the end there are only a few choices,
1. Offer the kid you most want and tell the next guy(s) that you like them but are waiting on someone. If the guy you most want chooses elsewhere, offer the next guy.

2. Offer the kid you most want and pretend to offer the next guys. If you the guy you most want chooses elsewhere, make the next guy's offer real.

3. Offer several guys and tell them first to commit gets the spot - or don't tell them (I guess) and let the slower guys find out once it's too late.

4. Offer several guys and give them all scholarships if they want.
[For the most part, nobody really does this.]

--------------
Of course Shaw is recruiting qbs that he has not offered - for example Guarantano. It appears that Shaw is quite averse to the non-commitable offer scenario. A situation for which his predecessor apparently had no qualms.

Damn... now I really want him to come to Stanford.  It would be hard to root against him, even if he joined the evil empire.

Just a heads up - Costello will be announcing his commitment tomorrow at 2:45 PST.

Feeling confident that the good guys will land him.

Oddly, the team I've seen the most woofing from on Twitter is the team he's least likely to select.

I predict KJ to the forces of good, but I wouldn't at all be shocked by KJ to the Evil Non-Empire.*

My opinion of another human being who I don't know at all will go to polar extremes this afternoon.

I'm gearing up to start getting excited about Guarantano.

Looks like Costello is going to do the hat thing...

Stanford hat will be on his right, which makes it the easiest for him to pick up.  :)

Indeed, the Michigan woofing offended somebody, because Costello has apparently eliminated them.
