Always good to notch a series win. This one was tough, with plenty to worry about or celebrate depending upon your wont. 

The good:
There is a reliable top-end of the bullpen now. 
The top end of the bullpen is clearly: Dowd - Bruno - Pancer. 
Those three came in, in order, for both the Friday and Sunday games. Combined they covered 10.2 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 2 walks. 

Matthews keeps chugging along. He's now second in the Pac 12 in ERA - just behing UCLA's Kelly Austin (though Matthews has 21 more innings pitched - and Austin seems to have been moved to the UCLA bullpen, maybe something like the way Matthews was used last year). 

Stanford remains in second place in the Pac, 1/2 game behind ASU (who had a rain out canceled game vs UW last weekend). Oregon is now in third, 2 games behind Stanford. 
Our advantage vs ASU is that their four remaining series are against the #2 through #5 teams in the conference (i.e. the four teams following ASU in the standings). 

The Bad: 
The rest of the bullpen is struggling. Dugan, Meier, OHarran, Lopez, Uber, Montgomery have not been effective just lately (though Meier had a few good outings last week). We need some productivity there - maybe two guys who can manage several innings (another couple if we have to manage a 5 game week). 

Matt Scott has suddenly had two rough outings. Wonder if he hit the freshman wall. Last two outings: 7.2 innings pitched, 9 runs, 10 hits, 5 walks, 2 HBP. 

The offense vs. front line pitchers. Still putting up runs versus lesser arms, but in thee of the past four series the offense has folded against our opponents #1 and #2 starters (that includes Oklahoma, Oregon, UW). The opponents' starters' stats in those 6 games were: 7 1/2 innings per game; 0.8 runs/9 innings; 5.8 hits/9 innings. The team went 1-5 in those 6 games.

My only quibble. Dugan has been much better in his last few appearances.

He pitched okay in the mess vs. UW on Saturday. Two outings before that (Oregon and Texas Tech) were pretty rough. 

However, he is one of the guys who seems he could break through and be a contributor down the stretch.

Stanford leads the PAC 12 by a half game over ASU and 2 games over ucla and Oregon

Unfortunately, Stanford is in second and trails ASU by half a game.
[As of Sunday night, the Pac-12 web page for the baseball standings still only recorded games through Friday - at which point Stanford led ASU by 1/2 game. Since then, Stanford split two with UW and ASU beat OSU twice.] 

Also with the update, third place is a tie between Oregon and USC, both two games behind Stanford (but both took a series from Stanford). 
UCLA is fifth, three games behind Stanford.

During the extended period of time that I figured Stanford was going to lose this game, I was trying to figure out how much this was a terrible development overall versus just one game. There are the typical positives and negatives. 

Positives (as of the middle of the 9th)
- 5 of 6 pitchers actually pitched rather well. Those five pitchers went 8 2/3 innings, gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk. Particularly encouraged by Dugan's solid outing and Scott, coming off two rough outings, struck out three straight for a perfect (but short) stint. 
- Getting on base. Stanford had 15 on base at that point (plus 5 more in the ninth). In the words of Moneyball, we want guys who get on base - it's the key to offense. 

Negatives (as of the middle of the 9th inning)
- The team's biggest star (Montgomery) has been in a bit of a rut (at least by his standards). Pitching is right off. Batting average has dropped 86 points in April. Only 1 HR in April. 
- By my count, Stanford was 0-13 with runners in scoring position until Sapien's walk off hit to end the game. That corresponds to 11 LOB (which would have been 13 or more if they hadn't won in the ninth). Lack of timely hitting seems to have been a thing lately. 
- Several guys had seen their averages dropping during April. Bowser down ~50 points, Cobb down 58 points, Moore ~30 points. 

But, then a ninth inning 2R HR by Montgomery and 5 hits overall, and many of those worries seem to evaporate.

I believe Carlos Quentin retired the title “human pincushion” when he was hbp 5 times in one game.
