So emblematic of this season.  It will be a small miracle if we keep the axe.

Stanford/WSU Bench Bunch - Langdude - 11-21-2019

Bench Bunch. The following non-injured non-redshirting scholarship players did not appear against the Cougs.

Stanford/WSU Frosh Force - Langdude - 11-21-2019

Frosh Force. Eighteen (!!) true freshmen played against the Cougs. Twelve of them have had their redshirts burned; Jake Hornibrook officially used a year of eligibility with his fifth appearance of the season. There were also three debuts! It really is incredible, probably unprecedented, how many true freshmen are getting playing time. Yes, it is largely because of injuries. But it is also because various positional pipelines got inexcusably thin, IMHO. (And, of course, it is also because new NCAA rules allow true freshmen to play at the end of the season without using a year of eligibility if they play less than five games.)

  • TE Bradley Archer made his season debut on ST; he did not record a statistic. Congratulations, Bradley!
  • ILB Aeneas DiCosmo played in his second game; not sure if it was ST or D, but probably the latter. He did not record a tackle.
  • OLB Stephen Herron played in his third game of the season, I think on ST. He recorded a tackle.
  • WR Elijah Higgins played on ST; not sure about O. He has played in in all ten games this year, but has not yet had a ball thrown to him.
  • OG Jake Hornibrook started at RG for the fourth time. Playing in his fifth game of the season, he officially had his shirt burned.
  • RB Austin Jones carried the ball two times for seven yards, and caught five receptions (!) for 27 yards. Austin has played in all ten games this season.
  • S Spencer Jorgensen, a walk-on, played in his eighth game on ST, and did not record a tackle.
  • CB Kyu Blu Kelly started at CB for the seventh week, and had a solid game with six tackles and a PBU. He has played in all ten games this season.
  • CB Zahran Manley played in his sixth game of the season on ST and on D. He had two tackles.
  • S Jonathan McGill played on defense as the starting NB for the seventh week. He had a solid game: five tackles and an INT. He's played in all ten games this season.
  • OT Barrett Miller played in his tenth game of the season, starting at LG for the sixth time.
  • C Drake Nugent played in his second game.
  • DE Joshua Pakola made his season debut, on D. He recorded a tackle. Congrats, Joshua!
  • RB Nathaniel Peat carried the ball once for a yard, and had one reception for one yard, and had a tackle. The hat trick! He played in his tenth game of the season.
  • OT Walter Rouse started at LT for the ninth time. He has played in all ten games this season.
  • P Ryan Sanborn, a former walk-on, did not punt due to injury, and missed his only FG attempt (39 yards) and made his two PAT attempts. He had four kickoffs without a touchback. Ouch. He's played in all ten games.
  • ILB Tristan Sinclair played on D in his third game of the year, recording a tackle and PBU.
  • CB Nicolas Toomer made his season debut on ST, and did not record a statistic. Congratulations, Nicolas!

Here I come with the weekly corrections :)

Archer had at least 1 snap on O that I saw. Higgins too; unfortunately when he's in, he's blocking - and the opposing D knows it.

I didn't actually watch closely, but we saw Herron come in on D against Arizona, so it's possible he did so again.

Can you believe we've had 17 of 21 scholarship freshmen (and 3 [former and current] walk-ons!!!) play this season? Insane. The only ones missing out:
- WR Colby Bowman
- WR Marcus Graham
- DB Salim Turner-Muhammad, which is funny considering he was the only 4* out of the 5 DBs
- ILB Levani Damuni (most likely getting back into football shape post-mission)

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - BobK - 11-22-2019

Archer was in for several plays. Had to check the roster for “who’s that”?

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - BostonCard - 11-22-2019

The fact that we burned a bunch of redshirts does say a lot about our pipelines.  But I wonder if we would really play as many of the freshmen if there were more of a cost to their eligibility.  I almost wonder whether playing time at this point is a way to keep the freshmen whose shirts are not being burned engaged and motivated, plus to offer them a little bit of experience, rather than because we truly need them in the game.

Stanford/WSU M*A*S*H Unit - Langdude - 11-23-2019

M*A*S*H Unit. The following players did not appear against the Cougs due to injury. Other notes...

Stanford/Kal Frosh Force - Langdude - 11-25-2019

Frosh Force. Fourteen true freshmen played against the Weenies. Twelve of them have had their redshirts burned. It seems Stephen Herron and Tristan Sinclair were held out to preserve redshirt eligibility; they can still play against ND and retain their shirts. Speaking of redshirts, I have reassigned the eligibility years of both Walker Little and Andres Fox given that they have used this year as their redshirt year, though that will likely not end up mattering in the case of Little, at least.

  • TE Bradley Archer played in his second game on offense, and probably on ST. He got the first reception of the year, for zero yards.
  • ILB Aeneas DiCosmo played in his third game, probably on D. He did not record a tackle.
  • WR Elijah Higgins played on ST and on O as a blocking WR. He has played in in all eleven games this year, but has not yet had a ball thrown to him.
  • OG Jake Hornibrook started at RG for the fifth time, playing in his sixth game of the season.
  • RB Austin Jones carried the ball six times for 23 yards, and had two tackles. Austin has played in all eleven games this season.

  • S Spencer Jorgensen, a walk-on, played in his ninth game on ST, and did not record a tackle.
  • CB Kyu Blu Kelly started at CB for the eighth week, and had two tackles; not his best game. He has played in all eleven games this season.
  • CB Zahran Manley played in his seventh game of the season on ST and on D. He did not record a statistic.
  • S Jonathan McGill played on defense as the starting NB for the eighth week. He had two tackles. He's played in all eleven games this season.
  • OT Barrett Miller played in his tenth game of the season, starting at LG for the seventh time.
  • RB Nathaniel Peat caught one ball for six yards, and returned a kick for 17 yards. He played in his eleventh game of the season.
  • OT Walter Rouse started at LT for the tenth time. He has played in all eleven games this season.
  • P Ryan Sanborn, a former walk-on, punted three times for a 32.7 (!) yard average, landing two inside the opponent's 20 yard line. He also kicked two clutch FG (48 and 44 yards) without a miss, and handled four kickoffs with two of them going for touchbacks. He's played in all eleven games.

Quick comments as usual :)

DiCosmo did not play on D - Robinson and Pryts went the whole way. DiCosmo and Austin Jones share #20, and I think both of Jones' credited tackles were actually DiCosmo on STs...Jones doesn't play on kickoff or punt cover team.

Hard to be upset at Sanborn's average when we punted in Cal territory twice.

Thanks, SMF, as always. Will alter above.

Weird to think that there was an ILB on P and K cover!

    • S Kendall Williamson, so., missed one game.
  • If this list is correct, that's 167 player-games missed due to injury, an average of 15.2 per game.
  • I think I got all injuries. Any corrections are, as always, welcome.

What I find interesting about this list is the injury concentration in position groups. While the OL has been decimated, the WR, TE and DL position groups have largely been untouched.  If the absence of Turley is the cause of injuries, why are some position groups healthy and others unhealthy?  My theory is that injuries are mostly random and we had bad luck for them to concentrate in the areas where we had the least amount of depth (OL and ILB). That is an inconvenient theory for message boards as there is no one to point fingers at.

the lack of depth at the positions hit hardest by injuries is in fact pointing a finger (or fingers) in terms of roster management and recruiting decisions/effort.  too many reps by too few players will add up over time especially given the situation with our training (not S&C) staff.

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - Langdude - 11-30-2019

Walk-On Union Watch. Seven non-scholarship players got PT against the Weenies. In addition...

Stanford/ND Frosh Force - Langdude - 12-01-2019

Frosh Force. Sixteen true freshmen played against the Irish. Twelve of them have had their redshirts burned. Neither Stephen Herron nor Bradley Archer played, and could have and still retained their redshirts, perhaps to give other freshmen some PT. At some point in the many coming weeks and months of no Stanford football, I'll do some sort of post mortem on freshman appearances this season.

RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel - CompSci87 - 12-01-2019

I thought I saw that Nugent came in on offense when Rouse was injured. I didn't see whether he lined up at Rouse's tackle spot or if there was some shuffling.

Also pretty sure N. Williams was in on defense late in the game, not just ST.

Yeah, I can confirm that Nugent came in when Rouse got injured.
