Never heard of this guy before today, but people who follow recruiting probably have.

I'm afraid I agree with you. I liken the situation to Todd Marinovitch, where he really liked Stanford, but in the end the ties to U$C were just too strong.
Just hope DS has got a top notch backup in mind, because we really need to sign an elite QB this year.

Robertson could end up # 1 in his class. This is brobdingnagian and he is excited with the offer

Anyone know if he is in the ballpark academic wise?

Just the fact that we have made an offer to another elite QB at this time makes me suspect that Costello may have already informed Stanford that he will commit to SC. Of course, if Costello does choose SC,we should continue recruiting him. Still about 11 months to signing day, commitments can change.

Who else did we offer?

I don't believe we have offered a 2nd QBÂ We want Costello

Robertson is not a QB.

My bad, everyone. Careless glance at the thread and a big, incorrect assumption on my part.
Hoping for the best with Costello.

You would think that Shaw would be recruiting another QB if he wasn't reasonably sure he was going to sign Costello. So since he apparently isn't, perhaps that's a good sign.
Interesting that Costello wasn't even U$C's first choice at QB this year. However, since their #1 prospect gave a verbal elsewhere, they perhaps have put the full court press on him.
At any rate, we'll know next week.

I don't know anything about this young man other than what I read and I have no inside knowledge, but we should be looking good on this one. This guy sounds like a Stanford kid who will make the right decision.

Look at the depth at the position.
USC has #1 overall QB from 2014 Max Browne and another top QB prospect from 2015 in Ricky Town. Stanford signed Burns in 2013 and Chryst in 2014 and didn't take a QB in 2015, IMO in large part to increase odds of getting Costello.
At Stanford, he's got a redshirt year with Chryst likely starting as a RS Soph. He's practically guaranteed of playing at least one year and maybe two if Chryst leaves early. At USC he's got the real possibility of never getting a chance to play ever, as Browne and Town are right ahead of him class-wise. Browne will be a RS Soph starting in 2016 or Town will be starting as a RS Frosh. Stanford doesn't tend to sign as many elite QB prospects, so the odds of Costello actually playing at Stanford are greater than at USC.
When you factor in the educational opportunities, you have to like Stanford's chances. Speaking of that, on a related note...
Ca.l signed a JC transfer who originally went to USC out of high school, DE Devante Wilson. Last week he specifically commented on how Ca.l's academic requirements are "nothing like at USC" and a big adjustment for him. I've always maintained you can get an education anywhere, but it really helps when you're surrounded by people who take school seriously. When you look at the fact USC annually puts nobody on the Pac-12 All Academic team (except walk-on kickers that never see the field), there is no debate about which school's football program puts a priority on not just going to class, but getting an education, between USC and Stanford.
That said, if Costello's family is well off and well-connected, it probably doesn't much matter if he even gets a degree in terms of his financial future...

I think that is a strong argument, but Costello recently was quoted as saying that he isn't afraid to go to a school where there will be a lot of competition. You could certainly interpret that as him saying he doesn't care how many elite QB's U$C signed this year (actually they signed another one besides Town); that it isn't going to be a factor in his decision.

In my business, I always say I don't care what they say, it's what they do. Costello may say he doesn't mind competition, but he may still have it as a major factor in his decision.

Shaw is recruiting other qbs. The one mentioned most prominently on other sites is Jarrett Guarantano from New Jersey. However, as per his MO, he apparently will only be offering one at a time.
The recruiting sites seem to be saying that the "buzz" lately has been for S.-C., though as far as I can tell the buzz is only the bouncing around of random guesses among the web site guys themselves.

I checked out Jarrett's profile and it's been saying for the last two months he's ready to commit. So maybe the fact that he hasn't means he's waiting to see if he gets a Stanford offer before he pulls the trigger.

Looks like the Costello ship has sailed for Stanford.
Drukarev is reporting a new 2016 QB offer is out.

Who? I subscribe and can't fund this offer.
Re: Class of 2016 -

Bah, my old eyes played a trick on me! I see the offer was for a "DB" not "QB"
Sorry for the unwarranted alarm. But honestly, I really like Guarantano if Costello decided to join the Dark Side. Stanford hasn't offered him yet, but the repots I read say he's very high on Stanford. Any time you can get a QB Brian Kelly, Urban Meyer, and Nick Saban want, it would be a good get.
