Picking Iowa to me is very different than a recruit picking Notre Dame, Duke, UCLA, or USC over us. Good luck to her. Hope she can survive those Midwest winters. Iowa will now have two CA kids on their roster.

Yeah that is now two Mitty stars who have spurned Stanford. I wonder if Hayley Jones's ungraceful exit had anything to do with it. Or if not that what did.

The same reason we've missed out on other big-time recruits. Tara's gone and last season's performance didn't help. Kate and company will have to get the team back to being the powerhouse they once were, or at least close to it.

We are fortunate Swain, Somfai & Eschemeyer decided to go with us despite the uncertainty or else Kate would have had a whole less to work with.
As I mentioned before, I think this upcoming season is critical for the future of the program. ESPN has us as a #9 seed in their first pre-season Bracketology since the end of last year recently. I hope that will be our floor and we can get into a #5-#6 range and maybe if the freshmen make an immediate impact, then one of the last #4 seeds (perhaps that's wishful thinking)
In any case, it is imperative that we prove that last year's results were a fluke and that Kate can re-establish that level of excellence in the post-Tara era. I believe that could convince the elite recruits to consider us again, because right now, it seems like we are not drawing too much interest from the top-10 recruits in the next couple classes.

I feel like everybody has an inflated view of what recruits we have gotten in the past. We did have Haley Jones and Brink back to back. But beyond that, our top ten recruits have been relatively few for many years prior to that. In the past 25 years or so (just thinking of the time since I was on campus), we have had Nicole Powell, Jayne Appel, the Ogwumike sisters, and Wiggins. Oh, and Yamasaki if stretching all the way back to 2000 (or was she 99?). And then add in Haley Jones and Brink in the 2020s. But for the period between 2000 and 2020, I feel like those were our only top 10 recruits. I could be missing some perhaps, but off the top of my head those were the top 10 recruits we got over a 20 year period between 2000 and 2020-- 6 in 20 years. So, it's not like we used to be getting top 10 recruits every year or even every other year -- Haley Jones and Brink back to back were an anomaly. We have two coming in this year in Swain (#5 in Prospects Nation) and Somfai (#2 in ASGR), which is the best we have had in a single year in the past 25 years -- and yet many people seem to be acting like we are in an abnormal drought.
Edit: Forgot Demetre and Kianna Williams in there, but again both a bit more recent.

Don't forget Jump and the Hull twins (who were HS National Champions).

All great players, but they weren't top ten recruits. Lexie was 14th in ESPN and 45th in PN, Lacey lower. Jump was #50 in ESPN rankings.

Lauren Betts was a #1. I think Kayla Pederson and Janet Pohlen were borderline top ten, depending on which ranking you looked at. Brook Smith might have been a top 5 recruit, though she started out at Duke.
Lexie was a top 20 recruit and Lacie was a top 80-100 recruit, IIRC.
Some others to consider who may have been top 10 at some point in their HS career:
Jenna Brown
Anna Wilson
Jos Tinkle

Believe me, I haven't misremembered our recruiting history. I can still recall the surprised disappointment in the post-Ogwumike years of the mid-2010s when I thought we would have been able to translate our run of 5 straight Final Fours into brobdingnagian recruiting hauls but it took about a decade to bring in our first #1 recruit since Chiney.
But a fan can still hope (maybe foolishly) that we can do even better in the future, hope that Kate would set that as a goal for herself, to not only continue but perhaps exceed what her predecessor and mentor accomplished. Because what I do know is that the periods of our most success over the last 20 years (late 2000s-early 2010s) and a decade later (late 2010s-early 2020s) coincided with multiple elite recruits (Candice, Appel, Pederson, Pohlen and the Ogwumike sisters and then Kiana, Haley, Lexie, Brink) all playing on the same team together.

I think we can all agree that we have an outstanding recruiting class of freshmen with 3 consensus All-Americans in Swain, Eschmeyer, and Somfai. When was the last time Stanford had that? What concerns me is whether Kate will rely mostly on experience this coming season (where the freshmen sit, learn and play limited minutes in non-conference) or play our All-Americans early and often.
Perhaps this is wishful thinking, but by the middle or end of December, I'd love to see a starting lineup of: Nunu and Lara at the 3 and 4 positions, Alex at the 5, with Chloe and Hailee in the backcourt. My other wish is (during non-conference), Kate allowing the freshmen to stay on the court (and develop) even if they make a mistake.

2026 Forward Amari Byles (#37 ESPNW, #23 247 Sports) told a reporter today that she has officially narrowed her list down from 15 to 6:
Stanford plus Oregon, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Iowa and Baylor. Same as her "official visit" list earlier.

Per ESPNW they have a section on remaining 5 stars for 2026 that are uncommitted. Kaeli Wynn is down to Stanford and South Carolina. Not sure if she still has an OV coming up with us? She did visit South Carolina in September.

By the same token, the article shows we are not on the list of final schools being considered by No. 8 Brihanna Crittendon, 6'2 wing, who is on our list at the top of this thread

I was wondering if she was still on the radar, as we hadn't heard anything about visits, etc. I'll move her out of the possibles list.

Byles fell to the 30's in the most updated ESPN rankings, but is still #16 on Prospects Nation... Wynn is #39 there.
They seem like the remaining highest priority targets, with perhaps Fope Ayo and Elyse Ngenda waiting in the wings...

this is all disappointing, but when I see a kid's final four including a few with only so-so academic reputations, that tells me that academics were not a priority. So not a fit EVEN if admissible.
