Same here. He would be a great add to what has been an excellent free agent off season by the Giants.  According to FanGraphs, the Giants have signed five of the Top 50 free agents as measured by 2022 WAR, including Correa (#3), Manaea (#23), Haniger (#27), Joc Pederson (#30), and Stripling (#46). The rest of the NL West combined has signed just two of the Top 50, including Dodgers signing Kershaw (#9) and the Padres signing Bogaerts (#6).

BTW, once Correa formally signs, the Giants will have a higher 2023 payroll than the Dodgers by about $5 million. Just sayin'. Including Correa, the Giants have 13 players signed for 2023. The rest of the 40 man roster are under team control, either through arbitration or they're pre-arbitration.

LA found themselves boxed into a corner due to the Bauer arbitration hearing.  They can’t make any big moves until it is settled because if they lose, they will have to pay Bauer thus putting them up against the CBT limit.  Since they must remain below that limit to avoid paying a premium tax for going over multiple consecutive years, they are stuck.

Also, the Ohtani bidding next year weighs heavy in their decision-making process as well.  Avoiding the luxury tax this year allows them to reset next year.  Then they can pay Ohtani a bundle without concerning themselves about a multiple year tax penalty.

Meanwhile, the Giants were set up to pay big bucks this off-season (while keeping just below the CBT limit) and can repeat the process next year because of their frugality last season.

You can spend money but eventually there is a point at which you have to take a hard look at your balance sheet.  The only exception to that rule is Steve Cohen and the Mets.  It will be interesting to see how that plays out in the long run….

Even Lacob has limits.  Otherwise, Payton II would still be a Warrior.  Cohen?  I’m not so sure (yet).

I really liked Payton. At the same time, he's 30, he's had multiple surgeries and is missing at least 1/3rd of the Portland season.

Justin Turner to BoSox.  Dodgers a little less unlikeable.  Emphasis on little…. :)

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Phogge - 12-20-2022

Everybody is expendable. John Ford made a PT boat movie about it.

On the other hand, the Giants became far more unlikeable to Dodger fans with the signing of Correa.

All true; however, Correa holds a special place in the hearts of Dodgers fans.

Stripling and Pederson were well-liked former Dodgers.  Manaea and Haniger played their MLB ball on the West Coast.

No mention of the news, or lack there of?

The Giants cancelled all of Correa's and the Giant's planned events today. No introduction, no interviews on KNBR. Nada. An early tweet was that they were still awaiting a test result, perhaps from yesterday's physical. Uh oh. Crickets from the Giants.

AP now reporting a second person has come forward with info that there is a concern that popped up during the physical. . . .

This Correa news is kind of a bombshell. I don't even want to speculate on what was found in the physical that caused concern, but it certainly creates a lot of uncertainty and raises a lot of questions.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Phogge - 12-20-2022

Drugs? Damage? Chromosomes?

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - cardcrimson - 12-20-2022

Sportstalk was guessing that it's back related, as he's had issues in the past and put together quite a regime to keep it functioning the last couple of seasons.

Hoping that it's not incredibly serious and that the Giants and Correa work out an insurance policy of sorts. Apparently the Twins had one in place in case he couldn't play because of his health/back.

RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - Mick - 12-20-2022

Correa has a history of back issues, but Susan Shlusser reports that it is not a back injury. it isn't PEDs, they don't test for PEDs in physicals.

Whatever it was, it wasn't flagged by the Twins' end-of-season physical. The Twins had offered Correa 10 years at $285 million, a higher annual average salary than the Giants.

The guy who first reported it, Ron Blum, says these things rarely cause the whole deal to fall apart.

Not.  Good. So, Giants have Judgevforcan hour and Correa for 6 days. This could be the worst off season in Giants history…..

Time to get off the ledge, Lex.  Let’s wait until the test results are scrutinized……..
