Their coach makes a lot of strange decisions. The refs IMHO did not do a very good job today for both teams. The fact is, IMHO, Oregon is a "dirty" team and basically has been for the past 20 years. That said, the targeting call against Thibodeaux was marginal IMHO. He didn't know McKee was going to get hit from the other side at the same moment. He didn't lower his head. The helmet to helmet contact was cause by the hit from the other side. However, it was called. OTOH, I think the refs were letting Oregon get away with a lot of contact on the jump balls. I am glad they had the guts to call it at the end.

The fact is Christobal cost them the game by 1) not just running the ball on the last Oregon drive, and 2) playing a "prevent" defense with nobody in the middle of the field, especially after Stanford showed they could exploit it. Oregon the team didn't play great today, but their coach performed much, much worse IMHO.

The hit by Thibodeaux was clearly targetting.  Rod Gilmore broke it down quite well.  There was head to head contact, initiated by Thibodeaux, and, key to the finding, Thibodeaux "launched" by jumping into the QB, which clinched it.

Also, there was the fourth down call (not the decision to go for it, but the offensive playcall) at the end of the first half.  The game is very different if they score a TD there.

ESPN says the fans stormed the field.  If so, Stanford will get fined.  Any eye witness testimony?

Lots of fans on the field. Mostly students I think. It didn't look like a dangerous crush.

Was the contact initiated by Thibodeaux? I think it arguably was initiated by McKee getting tackled from the other side and driven towards Thibodeaux.  He didn't really jump into the QB. He mostly went straight up. McKee was driven into him, at least arguably. Note that McKee fell ahead and TOWARD Thibodeaux. You would expect the opposite if Thibodeaux initiated the contact. I can see that argument anyway, and I expect we will hear a lot about it from Oregon this coming week. I am glad we got the call though.

No question.  Here it is in slow motion.

McKee was hit pretty much simultaneously by both tacklers.  McKee was not moving towards Thibodeaux.

That reporter is quite the Oregon fan. His story calls the penalty on the final play of regulation "controversial" about three times and tops it off with "questionable."

Personally, I think we would have beaten Auburn had we made the national championship game that season.

Watching the replay you kindly provided again, I agree. I am pretty sure we will still hear about it though.

Our only loss that year was against Oregon; we went 12-0 against teams not named Oregon, and ended the year on a tear.  I think we would have beaten Auburn that year.

BC

Yeah, we will definitely hear about it.  If you go to that tweet, the majority of the replys think it was a bogus call, or that it was "technically" the right call, but that it shouldn't have resulted in an ejection.  Ultimately, players need to learn at the very least not to leave their feet when they are going in for a tackle, and to keep their heads up, instead of leading with the crown.

It definitely sucks to lose a player when the hit is not "malicious" (and I don't think this was), but the only way you are going to get players to play safer is to make the penalty harsh.

Fortunately, Oregon plays Cal next week, and even Cristobal without Thibodeaux for a half can't blow it.  Can he?

It's a good thing our office is still working remotely. It would probably be impossible for me to be classy face to face with the Ducks fan in our office.

I thought the retro helmets were cool, but the stripes on the pants were too wide.

The original much sharper IMHO

2015. Losses to Northwestern and Oregon. The Rose Bowl win against Iowa (#5 vs #6) was awesome, but that Oregon loss is the big what could have been for me.

RE: OREGON GAME THREAD - terry - 10-02-2021

I'm going to ask a question that may have been answered already, but I haven't had a chance to get caught up with this thread because I was at the game. Which was awesome! It kind of reminded me of our OT win in Eugene in 2018, which I also attended, and which was also awesome.

Just a quick question -- who was the CB wearing #36 for us?

RE: OREGON GAME THREAD - winflop - 10-02-2021

Wow. Just wow.

I walked in hoping we didn't get run out of our building. I have Cristobal to thank for that not happening. I think Oregon could have just run between the tackles the entire second half and won by two scores, certainly the entire fourth quarter.

There's a lot to clean up, but for the next 24 hours, it's just a brobdingnagian win baby!

1. Once again, it was just great to be back at a live sporting event
2. Tanner McKee is a baller. Cool as a cucumber. Mature beyond his years. I hope he's not draft eligible after this season
3. We actually ran the ball decently. I really like Peat. Jones had some nice runs too

No doubt in my mind that Thibodeaux's hit was targeting. If you make helmet-to-helmet to contact on defense with any player (especially a QB), you're gone. I'm also glad they overturned the call against Stanford late in the game. That was definitely not targeting.

I'm looking forward to being in Tempe next Friday night!!!
