A quick reminder that getting the laces facing out is not just on the holder; if done properly, the snapper can make it so that the laces are facing down when the football arrives at the holder, which makes the holder's job much easier.

Good insight regarding Herron's redshirt. I think they need to try to preserve what they can or it is going to throw the pipeline numbers all out of whack. If Hornibrook and Manley keep playing, which seems likely, that will be 12 burnt shirts, half the class.
However, Andres Fox will only be able to play one more game and redshirt; he's already played in three games. I'll bet they save Andres for the last game if needed for bowl eligibility, or the bowl game if not.

I seem to recall that, in part, was the Niners' issue and contributed to Robbie Gould's uncharacteristic kicking miseries in the first six games of this season.

Are you certain that the snapper is charged w/ getting the laces properly positioned? I think that sound pretty preposterous. Every video I have ever seen of that action shows the holder placing the ball down and simultaneously rotating the ball until the laces point toward the target. It is usually a smooth action and happens almost every kick. The fact that our holder seems unable to do this has perhaps put the pressure on the center. It certainly seems that it is easier for the holder.

OK. I googled. Obviously, if it is googleable it must be a thing. But even so, if the snapper misses the placement of the laces, the holder MUST make the adjustment. It should happen only very rarely that the laces are not moved out of the way.

From what little I can derive from watching replays on TV, it seems that the holder is not attempting to rotate the ball to "fix" the issue. It may be that he is coached to assume the ball arrives with the laces down, and he just places it. I can see reasons for this, in that the extra time required to adjust the ball, small though it may be, increases the probability of a block, makes the timing of the kick more variable, and may lead to a fumble if not done right. So it may not be on the holder. It may be that if the ball doesn't arrive in correct orientation, the plan is to play it as it lies. Perhaps the kicker prefers predictable timing to known lace position. They don't appear to be trying to "fix" this, so the coaches must be OK with it.
RE: 2019 Stanford Football Personnel -

This is from a 16-year NFL veteran long snapper.
https://www.longsnapper.com/laces-out/
Quote:Many people have asked, “Is it possible to snap a ball and consistently get the laces facing forward?” The simple answer is yes. As an NFL snapper you are asked to be precise not only with your placement of the ball on field goal snaps but you are asked to have the laces facing forward when the holder catches the ball.
Basically, it is all about getting a consistent number of rotations on the ball (I've read 3 1/2 full rotations elsewhere). The author also makes a good point of what the best way to "miss" is...
Quote:But if you do “miss” it is best if the laces are facing the holder so he can see the laces when he catches the ball and can spin the ball into proper position.
And with regards to another poster's question...
Quote:If the snap is off and the laces are facing backward or to the side the holder must try to get the laces facing forward while still getting the correct lean on the ball. Normally a holder will put the ball down on the spot then try to spin the ball to get the laces facing forward. When a kicker sees the laces as he starts into his kick he can have an “Oh Sh–t” moment and panic a little. No kicker likes to kick the laces. A kicker also does not like to start into his kick and see the ball being turned to the forward position. I call that DJing the ball, like a DJ on the turntable. It can also be a judgement call of the holder whether to spin the ball or not. I have had snaps and the laces were off and the holder did not DJ the ball because they thought that would be too much of a distraction.

I believe the participation report is wrong, and whoever made it thought #6 (IBS on special teams) was Fox; they share a number. If Fox had actually played, he would have stats. Playing him in the first 3 games, when our OLBs were all healthy, would make absolutely no sense if staff was redshirting him to learn a new position. At the very least I watched the entire NW game and he 100% did not play - it was Toohill, J. Fox and Reid the whole game, with walk-on Caleb Phillips coming in for goal line D.
I actually believe "throwing the pipeline out of whack" isn't that bad considering the positions where most shirts are being burnt; we need to recruit more players per class anyways. The OL and DB pipelines can (and must!) support burnt shirts, considering we're planning to take 5 and 4 respectively next class, and will still likely have 2 OL (Nugent and Bragg unfortunately due to injury) and 2 DBs (Turner-Muhammad and Toomer) redshirting. Those need to be large rooms anyways since there are 5 on the field every down (we're in nickel a vast majority of the time). RB is a bit more tenuous for now, but if staff lands 2 and/or convinces one of the 2 seniors to return for a fifth year, we'll be ok.

Robbie Gould was an NFL-record kicker through 2018, with a career average of almost 90%. His average this year, with a new holder? 63%. He got back his long snapper two games ago and is 1 for 1 since. The narrative was that the former snappers couldn't put the ball where they needed to put it and were inconsistent.

Possibly this is a per-team decision. Some teams/kickers may prefer that the holder maintain constant timing and just put the ball down. Rotating the ball while placing it introduces the non-zero chance of dropping it or slowing down the placement. Maybe some teams just decide not to do it, as the lesser of two evils.

Robinson didn't play vs Colorado but should be back for tomorrow. Not that he'd play much anyways, but I heard Peek has been wearing a sling on his arm - can't confirm that though.
KJ, Adebo, Antoine, and Fisk were all hurt in the game.

Bench Bunch. The following non-injured non-frosh scholarship players did not appear against the Buffaloes.

- Davis Mills, jr. Count me among those who thinks Mills should have started the second half.
- Jack Richardson, sr.
- Jack West, so.

Frosh Force. Fifteen(!) true freshmen played against the Buffaloes. Eleven of them have had their redshirts burned; Zahran Manley officially used a year of eligibility with his fifth appearance of the season. Next up: Jake Hornibrook. There were also two debuts!
- ILB Aeneas DiCosmo played on D (not sure if he played on ST), making his career debut, but did not record a tackle. Congratulations, Aeneas, on the PT!
- WR Elijah Higgins played on ST and on offense; he has played in in all nine games this year, but has not yet had a ball thrown to him.
- OG Jake Hornibrook played in his fourth game of the season, starting at RG.
- RB Austin Jones carried the ball five times for 30 yards, and caught one reception for 4 yards. Austin has played in all nine games this season.
- S Brock Jones, a former walk-on, played in his eighth game on ST, and did not record a tackle.
- S Spencer Jorgensen, a walk-on, played in his seventh game on ST, and did not record a tackle.
- CB Kyu Blu Kelly started at CB for the sixth week, and had a solid game with four tackles. He has played in all nine games this season.
- CB Zahran Manley played in his fifth game of the season on ST and on D; shirt burned. He did not record a tackle, but has ensconced himself in the CB rotation.
- S Jonathan McGill played on defense as the starting NB for the sixth straight week. He had 3 tackles. He's played in all nine games this season.
- OT Barrett Miller played in his eighth game of the season, starting at LG.
- C Drake Nugent also made his career debut, though not sure where. I'm assuming on goal-line or PAT/FG. Congratulations, Drake!
- RB Nathaniel Peat carried the ball four times for 29 yards, but did not have the ball thrown to him, which has usually been his role. He played in his ninth game of the season.
- OT Walter Rouse started at LT for the eighth time. He has played in all nine games this season.
- P Ryan Sanborn, a former walk-on, had three punts for a 43.3 yard average, with one downed inside the opponent's 20. As the team's current kicker, he also had two FG made (40 and 36 yards; great!) and one missed (32 yards). Finally, he handled 4 kickoffs with four touchbacks. He's played in all nine games.
- ILB Tristan Sinclair played on D in his second game of the year, recording two tackles, including a TFL.

Hi friends. Here's two games' worth of Walk-On Union Watch.
Walk-On Union Watch. Six non-scholarship players got PT against the
Buffaloes.
- S Spencer Jorgensen, fr. He played in his seventh game on ST, and did not record a tackle.
- P Alex Gracey, so. He again served as the holder for field goals and extra points. He has played in every game this season.
- DE Dylan Boles, jr. He played in his second game of the season, presumably on defense. He did not record a tackle.
- OLB Thunder Justice Keck, jr. He did not record a tackle in his seventh appearance of the season. I'm assuming his appearance was on ST.
- OLB Caleb Phillips, jr. He has played in all nine games this year on ST. He did not record a tackle.
- OLB Anthony Trinh, sr. He did not record a tackle in his eighth appearance of the season on ST.
In addition...
- S Brock Jones, a freshman former walk-on, played in his eighth game on ST. He did not record a tackle.
- P Ryan Sanborn, a freshman former walk-on, served as the team's punter for the ninth game, and as its kicker for the second.
- WR Brycen Tremayne, a sophomore former walk-on, played in his ninth game, I think on ST. He did not have a reception or tackle.
- S J.J. Parson, a junior former walk-on, played in his seventh game, on defense. He secured an INT! Returned it for 11 yards.
- S Noah Williams, a senior former walk-on, played in his seventh game; I'm thinking ST since he did not record a tackle.
- ILB Ryan Beecher, a fifth-year former walk-on, started at ILB. He had five tackles and a quarterback hit. He has played in all nine games this season.
Walk-On Union Watch. Seven non-scholarship players got PT against the
Cougs.
- S Spencer Jorgensen, fr. He played in his eighth game on ST. He did not record a tackle.
- P Alex Gracey, so. He again served as the holder for field goals and extra points; he also took on the team's punting duties for an injured Ryan Sanborn, punting the ball three times for a 38.3 yard average, with two balls downed inside the opponent's 20 yard line. He has played in every game this season.
- DE Dylan Boles, jr. He played in his third game of the season, presumably on defense. He did not record a tackle.
- OLB Thunder Justice Keck, jr. He did not record a tackle in his eighth appearance of the season. I'm assuming his appearance was on ST.
- TE Kyle McCombs, jr. He did not record a reception in his third appearance of the season; he played offense, not sure about ST.
- OLB Caleb Phillips, jr. He has played in all ten games this year on ST. He did not record a tackle.
- OLB Anthony Trinh, sr. He did not record a tackle in his ninth appearance of the season on ST.
In addition...
- P Ryan Sanborn, a freshman former walk-on, served as the team's punter for the tenth game, and as its kicker for the third.
- WR Brycen Tremayne, a sophomore former walk-on, played in his tenth game, I think on ST. He did not have a reception or tackle.
- S J.J. Parson, a junior former walk-on, played in his eighth game, on defense. He recorded one tackle.
- S Noah Williams, a senior former walk-on, played in his eighth game; I'm thinking ST since he did not record a tackle.
- ILB Ryan Beecher, a fifth-year former walk-on, did not record a tackle on defense. He has played in all ten games this season.
- Freshman former walk-on safety Brock Jones did not play. Injured?
