Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 02-12-2016

I'm a little confused here.  Is a perfect SAT 1600, or something else?  If Robertson needs close to a perfect score, I seriously doubt he got that.

Re: Class of 2016 - Hulk01 - 02-12-2016

I wasn't being a Stanford homer.  I've never seen an offensive player move at will the way Mac did against Iowa.  I've never seen a performance like that, and I saw Sayers' big day and tons of Reggie Bush.

Out of 2400.

Re: Class of 2016 - ColoradoTree - 02-12-2016

Following up on 2016 commit Bailey McElwain, who didn't sign and expressed his intentions to enroll in prep school for a year to bolster his admissions profile before joining the Stanford team with the Class of 2017 guys, it appears we're no longer the only game in town:

Re: Class of 2016 - donkey687 - 02-12-2016

I assume the Vandy offer is for 2016. I wouldn't blame the guy for grabbing it.  It is a lot to ask someone to go to high school for another year for a shot at attending Stanford as it still wouldn't be guaranteed.

Here's the rundown on Robertson.  Still nothing about his score.

McElwain: my gues FWIW - FrankO - 02-12-2016

somehow,  I think a Shaw-Mason conversation took place ;)

just as it did between Tara and the Cal women's hoops coach re that New Zealand girl who wound up at Cal after Stanford admissions left her high and dry

just sayin'

Yep.  Per a publicly available interview on Scout (http://www.scout.com/college/football/recruiting/story/1642077-vandy-offers-2016-ath-bailey-mcelwain), it's for the Class of 2016.  And I agree with you that it has to be awfully tempting.  He doesn't have to go to prep school for a year with no guarantee of Stanford at the end of the rainbow (we don't think, at least--I'm speaking with no knowledge of exactly what transpired between Admissions and Bailey), he gets to stay in the Southeast, his parents go from being able to watch Bailey on TV to being able to watch Bailey in person (Nashville is about a 3-hour drive from his high school, and many other SEC schools are within driving distance), he still gets a great education, and he gets to play SEC football.  Southerners on this board would know more, but if a kid wanted to stay in the Southeast ultimately, I could see being part of the Vandy alumni network being just as valuable, if not more so, then the Stanford alumni network.

You know, I was wondering about this, too, particularly given that fullback and returning LDS missionary Houston Heimuli would also be part of our Class of 2017, and taking two fullbacks in what's already going to be a pretty small class seems like a stretch.  (That assumes Bailey would stick at fullback rather than playing ILB, at which he is also very good.)  I don't believe for a second that Shaw would ever pull an offer from Bailey to be a part of our 2017 class, but I could see him trying to find him a good landing spot at another school if things weren't certain to work out here, either academically or football-wise.

Re: Class of 2016 - TrumpCard - 02-12-2016

I doubt Shaw had to do any arm-twisting to get McElwain an offer.  Stanford recruits who get dinged are fertile ground for Vandy recruiting.  That's how Vancy got Nifae Lealao and Haden Lekacz in 2014.

Not exactly apropos of anything, there's no real reason for Robertson (or McElwain) to sign a NLI at all. The document itself isn't necessary to receive a scholarship and only imposes obligations on the athlete - not the school. One might suppose that a university wouldn't hold a scholarship for somebody who won't sign, but it's pretty clear that those still involved with Robertson will give him a scholarship if he shows up (and gets admitted in one case) and it's pretty clear that Vandy has a scholarship for McElwain that they would seem unlikely to use on anyone else at this point.

The article says he needs a 1500 (probably 3-part score) to initiate the application for consideration, which is quite different than getting 1500 to be admitted.  1500 (3-part) is not a high bar, so I would guess the former statement in the article is more likely the case.  His special skill would have to carry a lot of weight for him to be admitted.

I consider ND to be the favorite.

Anyone else surprised with that 1500 hurdle (out of 2400 max)?

And if you have 33 minutes to kill (until the WBB game starts?), this edition from Cardinal CounTree (Matt Vassar) on Rule of Tree may be of interest, with a few minutes on each of the recruits (a few days old).

Does anybody doubt that Stanford would have made the playoffs if Jabrill Peppers was on the roster?  Robertson's skill level sounds like it is potentially at that level, so I would call that a special f'in skill.  I'd rather have this kind of special skill on campus than a Nobel Peace Prize or a daughter of a (too) soon to be former President.

Schools place WAY too much emphasis on the SAT - this is coming from somebody with a 1500 on a two-part. My special skill is taking a stupid standardized test.  Give me a frickin' break, Dennis Shaw.  If the kid can get A's and B's at a Christian prep school, he can do the work at Stanford.  Admit him.

Yes.  Malala is possibly the only plausible winner in recent times, and therefore the exception.  It is usually a meaningless, political award.  Sure, many have been awarded it for merit, but as many for nothing.  For every winner in the last 100 years who "deserved" it there is another who, in my opinion, received it for spurious reasons.  From what I have read about this particular winner it would be an honor for Stanford to have her matriculate, but winning the Nobel Peace Prize is, sadly, a tainted honor.

Malia = daughter of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner
Malala (Yousafzai) = 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner

Aside from the similarities in their name, what they have in common is that both are reportedly considering Stanford.

I doubt it. The difference between Peppers and Whitfield last season isn't that great. Now if we had Andrus Peat we definitely make the playoffs
