Incidentally, what does a high school FB need to do to get more then 3*? Pancake 3 people/play? I get the feeling we get pretty much our pick of the nations top FBs that are academically eligible, and none of them can get past the low 3* range. This is clearly a position where stars and skills dont align.

Tom Rathman, played for the Cornhuskers, had a 6-7 foot high jump in high school, also won a low hurdles race. That oughta do it.

I have not thought of LB Dax Hollifield as a legit possibility for the last couple months, but this latest Rivals story suggests Stanford is right in the thick of it for him, especially since he is coming for the big visit weekend.

Don't know if he played both ways in an actual game with meaningful number of snaps on both sides of the ball. It would be insane in this day and age. Think about how crazy it was that Marecic played LB and FB. A lineman gets contact on every play.

In HS, I played every play of every game unless I got hurt. That's kickoff, kickoff receiving, punt, punt receiving, offense, defense, PAT, and PAT defense. I'm sure that many HS players do the same. I played for a California single A school. I only missed one quarter of one game because of injury, which I suffered riding a bull in a HS rodeo. My football coach was pretty angry about that.

...sounds like he didn't take any bull from you after that...
Seriously though, props to you...that's pretty nuts playing that much. I went to a smaller high school in Hawaii and we had ~4-5 guys playing both ways but I don't remember any of them having to pull punt + kickoff duty in addition to that - maybe one of those for the speedy guys, but not both.Â

I was also at a smaller HS and played pretty much every snap until senior year, when we had enough depth to rotate Dlineman and get off kickoff return team.
I think O and Dline is doable from an endurance standpoint at the college level (assuming rotating snaps on the DL) but both require such technical precision that it would be very tough to master both skill sets. The body types also tend to be a little different as the typical nose guard would be a bit oversized for an Olineman while the DEs would be undersized.

I played FB and OLB. On kickoff receiving I played mid-field. At FB, I mostly was a lead blocker on runs and a pass blocker on passes. I had to get into really good cardio shape to do it, but I never felt winded when the ball was snapped. Of course, none of our opponents played with hurry-up offenses. I was pretty sore on Saturdays, though. And, of course, all of our HS rodeos were on Saturdays. :-\
