Physical teams, teams that pressured us, and teams with exceptional guards who broke down our perimeter defenses and scored - gave us trouble last season and I don't see how the players coming back and newcomers will change that equation, unless their skill sets improve significantly over the summer. We were unable to get to the Seattle Regional with two All-Americans and the Defensive Player of the Year. If you step back and think about that, you realize that significant change must happen somewhere, especially with the offense that Tara likes to run.
Next March, I would love to be proven wrong on all counts.
I am more optimistic about next year:
Brink is a returning consensus All-American.
Betts shot 60% as a freshman (admittedly playing quite a bit late in the games) and averaged per 40 minutes: PTS-24.2; RBDS-14.4; A-2.0; S-0.6; B-3.6, PF-1.4; TO-2.0. And her play improved over the course of the season. And if our guards and wings will start shooting more 3s, Betts assists will go up - her inside-out passing is excellent. Some may say her game is not pretty, but she will be a weapon next year.
Iriafen: It was weird use of her this year, but what a great athlete to have available and hopefully use more productively next year
The point of the above is that I think Stanford has the best posts in the country next year. Offensively and defensively.
PG: Lepolo will be solid with a year behind her. She gets the ball up the floor and can make some great passes. She made too many mistakes late in the year but ended up with 125 As vs 65 TOs. I think she can get that ratio to 2.5 or better. Her D needs to improve but she seems not to get into foul trouble. Nivar can sub at PG as needed.
3 PT Shooting: HJ: 44%; AE-N: 42% (only 19 attempts); TL: 37%; BD: 33%; EB: 32%. With the strength of the posts, and 1 defender having to devote 100% to shadowing Jump, Emma-Nopu, Lepolo, Bosgana, and Demetre are going to get a LOT of open looks. They need to, and will (since the team can't just depend on Haley making something happen as the shot clock winds down) shoot more threes (and earlier in the possession). I think Lepolo's and Demetre's 3PT% will improve as a result to close to or above 40%. (I am less confident that Bosgana's % will but we can hope.)
Nivar: I think Indya is a big wild card. She has the potential of being really good: nice size/strength for a guard, smooth and athletic but shot 23% on 3PT shots (2PT%-51%) and had 35 As and 35 TOs. If she can improve her 3PT% and reduce the TOs, she could get a lot a minutes and average above 10 PTS and 6 RBs per game.
The D will be fine: The posts will lock down the interior; Emma-Nopu, Bosgana and Nivar will be solid and Demetre, Lepolo and Jump will do enough and play within the system.
Freshman: ?
So, is it a Sweet 16 team. Hell yes. They just need to win the first two tournament games.

Halftime, VT 34, LSU 32, after overcoming a 9 point LSU lead. In this house, cheering hard for VT. VT dominating the boards, but on the negative side, 10 turnovers to LSU's 4. Have to get better control of that. (BTW, Mulkey's jacket is a top ten omg for her, just my personal reaction and others are welcome to disagree!)

VT actually closed the half on an 11-0 run.

And opened the 2nd half with a 5-0 run.

Mulkey said that she doesn't choose her outfits.
LSU's Poole just got T'd up for yelling at the ref after the ref didn't call a foul. That's on Mulkey. Mulkey does this all the time and her players pick up on her behavior.

Maybe she doesn't "choose" her outfits, but she accepts and decides to wear the ones offered to her. As for the T, totally agree with the comment.

Mulkey's outfits just appear by the magical fairy?
That last turnover by VT was bizarre--10 second call after 8 seconds. Should have been an easy one for the ref to notice.

Per an article in USA Today this morning, designers constantly offer Mulkey outfits and she delights in accepting them and wearing them at games
Continuing to watch game, after doing very well through start of 4th, VT seems to be in a meltdown -- turnover over turnover, and LSU is dominating, up 70-62 with 3:40 to go, overcoming VT''s largest lead of 12

VT collapsed in the 4th. They started the 4th with a 9 point lead and now trail by 10 with 2:00 to play.

I tuned in at the start of the 4th, and I cannot comprehend how Virginia Tech got a solid lead before this, given how they are playing now. Total meltdown.

I guess we'll get to see another crazy outfit on Mulkey on Sunday.

Reminds me of some bad quarters turned in by our WBB team.
LSU is a transfer portal team.

I agree. I don’t follow them enough to know team tendencies but I very much question how they made it though their season with only 4 loses with so much poor poor interior defense. I know LSU is strong on the boards but it’s been like a layup line the whole fourth quarter. LSU gets right inside the paint misses and just grabs the rebound and lays it in. This is the Final 4 Virginia Tech! Show a little more effort and intensity my gosh. Also Va tech hasn’t really made any adjustments as they made their run. We know what that’s like (dejavu to UCLA game)

LSU 79, VT 72 -- not the way I wanted it to turn out. Looked like VT had it under control until the 4th, then total collapse. So yes, another Mulkey outfit on Sunday. Now, on to the main event of today, Iowa vs SC. Hope it's a really competitive game.

Look at these telling stats.
Points in the paint: 54-14 LSU
2nd chance point in 2nd half: 30-4 LSU
How does LSU score 54 paint points when they have worse perimeter shooters around Reese than we have around Brink? Should we be copying the Mulkey coaching playbook?
Whoever wins this later game needs to beat LSU. Mulkey does not need another championship.

Delighted to see Iowa start so well, and to see South Carolina look a little flustered. Hope they can keep it up for four quarters. Interesting that their defense--triangle and 2--is similar to the defenses that everyone played against us--box and 1. Apparently South Carolina has some perimeter players that Iowa does not fear taking jumpshots.
I would love to see Iowa have 3 more quarters like this 22-13 1st. Their style of basketball is so much more interesting to watch than South Carolina's. Plus Staley already has enough natties.

One way or the other, Tara needs to get more interior production next year. I attended 5 of the 6 games in Seattle, including the 2 E8 games. My impressions were (1) that our posts were easily better than those of any of the 8 teams in Seattle (no LSU or USoCar); but (2) every team had more good outside shooters who were willing to take an outside shot w/o hesitation when presented with an open opportunity.

Compared to Dawn Staley, Mulkey is a veritable librarian when it comes to yammering at the refs. After the second foul call on Boston (which WAs, indeed, rather sketchy after the failure to call Iowa just a few seconds earlier), Staley was in the refs ear non stop for about 20 seconds.

Did you mean exterior production? We need more outside shooting to prevent defenses from doing the box-and-1 on Jump, similar to what Iowa is doing to South Carolina. Opening space means threatening from all parts of the floor.
I think we all can agree we need better jumpshooting from outside and midrange. But knowing the problem is not knowing the solution. How do we get it? With incoming freshmen? With improved sophomores? Or getting some of our seniors and juniors not named Jump to become more credible threats? We tried all year long and failed. We will see how Tara solves the obvious problem, but I'd rather know now than have to wait 7 months ;(
South Carolina is having a better 2nd quarter than 1st, even with Boston sitting with 2 fouls. And keep in mind that South Carolina is strongest in the 4th quarter and overtime, after wearing other, less deep, lighter, shorter teams down over the course of the game.
I really help that Iowa doesn't succumb as we did and so many others who crumbled in the 4th.

Interesting that people complain about Lepolo's lack of production, when Caitlin Clark not only wasn't guarding Raven Johnson, but wasn't even looking at her and actually dismissively flicked her wrist at her. So now in the fourth quarter, Johnson shot and made two straight threes.
