I've wondered about this before, in the case of football players who didn't really need the scholarship. If your father played in the NFL, for instance. The problem, I assume, is the other benefits, primarily medical, that come along with a scholarship. I don't know if they would necessarily transfer if a recruit decided he didn't want the scholarship. Really, though, I have no idea.

At one level, that is simply called being a walk on. Stanford has a few of those each year. There are some rules that limit how far that goes, which is specifically aimed at stopping schools from having 120 football players on scholarship while only having 85 on football scholarships.
The key rule is that if a student is recruited and receives any financial aid from the institution, then they bcome a "counter" the moment they appear in a game.
There are a bunch of rules that define whether or not you are "recruited". For most of our walk ons, Stanford works hard to make sure that the student in question is not "recruited". For better players, not recruiting them will mean not getting them.
All in all, preventing what you describe is exactly the intent of the rules.

Might the 25 limit in part explain why the 3 committed this weekend rather than waiting until Tuesday and risking trying to commit when there are no spots left?

Who is going to the LOI reception? We should learn about Fox there. I'll be there.
Apparently, Fox enrolled and counted for 2015 for purposes of the 25 limit. Whether he started the clock for 5 years of eligibility is a different story, and not clear. So there is room for all admitted recruits with offers.Â

Can you tell us where the "apparently" came from?

It would be so easy for you to get this information. It is available to the general public for a small fee. If you don't like the crumbs, then don't read them.

If you want credibility, then don't throw out crummy claims. With your posts no one knows if your information is substantiated or not. In many cases, posts like yours are just rumors.
By stating that you can read the information that supports your claim for a small fee, everyone here knows who you are talking about. Thus, you would not have violated a rule by saying, "According to the Card Report..." But since you did not do that, one can only assume that your information isn't credible.

Is it that hard to just say "it came from Drukarev" or something to that effect?
There was no complaint in the question, just a question.Â

So that means there are 3 spots remaining. The OG, Pyrts, and McCullough have been offered, and could accept.Â
What about Demetrius and how would we make a spot for him? He supposedly asked for an accelerated reporting of his test scores, which he said would be done a few days after the 25th, when he took them. Of course, it would still have to be evaluated by admissions. Could he have improved his score by say 80-90 points and is waiting to see if that is enough?

It does look like there are three places and it would be great if these three you mention would take Stanford up on their offers. The guard is Dylan Powell. Has been on a visit this weekend and is announcing on Tuesday. I think there are intimations about a possible stealth recruit. One bad way for another place to be opened up is if Mike Williams opts for Texas.

Short of Mike Williams opting out, how could a 4th spot open up for Demetrius?Â

The logical conclusion is that the staff is pretty confident that it won't have to open a 4th spot. The staff is operating with more information than we are.

I've added the official Stanford football thread, all committed players, plus the three admitted, but uncommitted players, along with the Rivals and Scout Stanford reporters to this Twitter list:

My uneducated guess: McCulloch stays in TX; Powell, Pryts go Cardinal. Staff saves a slot for long-shot Robertson.

McCulloch would be a great get and really complete this class. I am optimistic that Eboh's tweet about the class not being finished yet refers to his fellow Texan that he knows is joining.

I love the spirit, but the hashtag really should just be #FatFive, considering the most newsworthy member was pilfered from Michigan.

By my count we have 4 spots open right now. I'd say how but when trump posts some critical info people jumped all over him. Why the anger over news? Â

I don't know, speaking only for myself I appreciate the tidbits of info that you and trump have provided. I joined Rivals during a promo period but beyond a couple weeks during the year for me it would be too much info and forum conversation. Right now I am tempted.
