I’m guessing it had to be prior to 1961 when the league began to expand by adding Dallas and Minnesota. Logic suggests the fewer the number of teams, the less chance there is of a Round One trade.  

How about 1959 or 1960?

Really good guess. The last time every team had their own first round pick was 1970, the date of the AFL/NFL merger.

I think it's John Elway. Nine Pro Bowls, Pro Football Hall of Fame, 2x Super Bowl Champion, Super Bowl MVP, NFL MVP, played in five Super Bowls. Lots of other great #1 overall selections (Earl Campbell, the Mannings, Chuck Bednarik, Ron Yary, Bradshaw, Bruce Smith, Aikman, Russell Maryland). And Stanford had three other #1 overall picks (Bobby Garrett, Plunkett, Luck). For me, it's Elway.

75 MLB players stole 15 or more bases in 2024, including two Giants (Tyler Fitzgerald with 17 and Matt Chapman with 15). Grant McCray stole five in 37 games, many as PH or defensive replacement.

Which team holds the modern day stolen base record?
Which player led the league with the fewest stolen bases?
Which Giant was the last Giant to lead the league in stolen bases?

Not the Cardinals, but it is a National League team. The year Vince Coleman set the record, the Cardinals had 248. The record is 346. Think unlikely team...:D

The record, BTW, is post-1900. Pre-1900, there were rules that artificially increased stolen bases; e.g., if a player hit a long single and stretched it into two bases, he would get credit for a single and a stolen base.

The American record holder is the 1976 pre-Rickey Henderson A's have the second-most stolen bases by one team in a season with 341, including:

Bill North, 75
Campy Campaneris, 54
Don Baylor, 52
Claudell Washington, 37
Phil Garner, 35
Larry Lintz, 31 (basically a designated runner)
Sal Bando 20
Matt Alexander 20 (DH)

Interesting team. This is one year after three consecutive WS championships. They ran like crazy, lost Catfish and Reggie to the Yankees, had just two All-Stars, Phil Garner and Rollie Fingers; but Bando, Rudi, Tenace, Vida Blue and Fingers got MVP votes.

Fewest stolen bases to win a league title is Dom DiMaggio of the Red Sox leading the AL with 15 in 1950. That year, only five players across both leagues had 15, including Sam Jethroe (38, Braves), Pee Wee Reese and Duke Snider (17 and 16, Dodgers), and Earl Torgeson (15, Braves)

I started watching sports in 1980. Since 1980 the St. Louis Cardinals hold the record for most stolen bases in a season. And I was correct on the year too, 1985. So there!

That is true, the St. Louis Cardinals had 314 stolen bases in 1985.

In 1911, the New York Giants had 347 stolen bases, under today's rules, as follows:

61 Josh DeVore
51, Fred Snodgrass
49, Fred Merkle
48, Red Murray
38, Larry Doyle
22, Buck Herzog
20, Art Fletcher
19, Beals Becker
Nine players with 1-9 steals, including Christy Mathewson with two.

Fast team. Also had 103 triples.

Good question, are we considering pitchers or position players only?  There have been lot's of outstanding years by pitchers - Pedro, Clemons, Gooden, Gibson, Marichal and probably many others I'm forgetting because they're Dodgers like that "O" something guy they signed last year.  

(Giants down 2-3 in the 8th in their opening day game vs Cincy as I type this.)

If it's a pitcher, my WAG is Denny McClain in 1968. Second choice, Koufax in 1964 or 65.

If it's a hitter, I'll go with Bonds' 73 HR year. Backup choice is Ted Williams. Third choice, Rickey Henderson.

EDIT: I had to look it up. I have no idea what goes into WAR. I do know now that Jim Palmer's 1975 record of 23-11/2.09 ERA is considered far more valuable than McLain's 31-6/1.96 ERA record. Also that Koufax's best WAR years were '63 and '66. So I give up on WAR...

Weird. Steve Carlton won 27 games his team 58 or so. That’s about half his teams wins. Or I have no clue what WAR is :)

The star pitcher on the player’s team is a Stanford grad.
