Re: Donald Stewart, from an article on Scout: "Stewart, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound receiver from Paramus (N.J.) Catholic, made an official visit to Michigan. He made an official visit to his other finalist, Stanford, last weekend. "I kind of have a slight lean toward Michigan," Stewart said."

Not good...

Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 01-25-2016

Now iShaw and co. have to show their recruiting chops on Stewart.  It's easy to recruit when you know the kids really want to go to Stanford and the only competition is admissions.  It's quite different when you've got someone who has been admitted but is leaning somewhere else.  Stewart would be a gigantic get for Stanford; he means a lot more to Stanford than Michigan, because Michigan can get elite players at the WR position with impunity.  Stanford can't.

I recall reading a post from someone who expressed concern about Mike Williams, given our recent de-commits:

This makes me happy - forget who had also noted he'd  pinned his acceptance tweet - every bit of reinforcement  helps!

Given what I've read on the internet, if Shaw can talk Stewart into going to Stanford, you would have to credit him for being a true master of recruiting.

Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 01-26-2016

Shaw and co. need to let Stewart know that he won't be recruited over next year like he will at Michigan.  If EUTM is recruiting over committed guys, you know he's going to do so over guys who are already on scholarship.  The real issue at hand could be that Stewart won't have his scholarship honored for four years at Michigan.  EUTM may decide not to renew his scholarship if he is recruited over in maybe as little as two years.  At Stanford, he'll get four years, no matter what, maybe even five.

I didn't even think this was possible, but did a little interwebs research, and found that a scholarship can indeed be revoked for athletic, academic, or disciplinary reasons. Wow. I am surprised. Has that ever happened at Stanford, that a scholarship was revoked for non-academic and non-disciplinary reasons, i.e., because a player was not good enough to contribute?

Re: Class of 2016 - BostonCard - 01-26-2016

Until recently all scholarships had to be 1 year deals, with no guarantee of renewal from year to year.  As a practical matter, not renewing a scholarship would likely result in bad publicity, but there was nothing preventing coaches from doing it.

Re: Class of 2016 - PrinceLightfoot - 01-26-2016

Harbaugh won't be able to run them off once on scholarship. That won't stop him from benching them, though.

Re: Class of 2016 - yvonne - 01-26-2016

Any player can be benched. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the lesser players become unable to play due to injury, though.

That is rather pointless as Michigan has essentially recruited over Stewart already in his own entering class.

Michigan already has four other WR in this class, all of them rated substantially ahead of Stewart. For that matter, in their very small class last year they also had two WR rated substantially higher.
And it's not as if Michigan throws the ball a lot more than Stanford. Harbaugh and Shaw want to run more or less the same offense. Last year Michigan threw for 26 more yards per game, and that only because UM didn't have the run game Harbaugh would like.

One way or another, it would seem that Mr. Stewart doesn't care.

His real danger is that if other things go well enough for UM, he suddenly won't be able to raise the UM guys on the phone when his LOI never shows up for his signature.

Yes, all scholarships are essentially renewable one-year contracts. You might remember that it was just a year or two ago that U,S,C made news by announcing that all of their athletic scholarships, school wide, would be four-year commitments. I've heard anything about that since, so I assume it's still in effect.

Judging from his comments Stewart's two top priorities seem to be:
1. Attending a school that isn't overly obsessed with academics.
2. Attending a school where he knows and feels comfortable with the coaches and players with whom he will be associating.

So we will see if Shaw can work around those issues.

Re: Class of 2016 - amartinsu13 - 01-26-2016

I don't follow Rivals like some of you, but I just found this on Reddit and this is news to me: UGA's Dawgnation website "Expect race for Demetris Robertson to go past National Signing Day"

https://www.dawgnation.com/football/recruiting/expect-race-for-nations-no-2-athlete-to-go-past-national-signing-day

Quote:"The reason why hinges on great academics. Not poor ones. Robertson, who’s at least a B-student in a demanding curriculum, told Dawgnation.com this month he needed to raise his SAT score by about 100 points to qualify for admission into Stanford. He took the SAT again within the last week.

Stanford has a flat scale for admission. It goes like this: Make the score. Take the official. The official visit is not offered to a prospect without that score.

If Robertson does not increase his score, then expect his decision to come down to Georgia, Alabama, Cal, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame. If he does, look for his timeline to extend another week. He would still have to take the visit out to Palo Alto, Calif., and check out Stanford’s  campus.

“He has three official visits left in his back pocket right now,” a person close to his recruiting decision said. “Stanford and Tech will get two of the three visits he has left. That last one is pretty much up in the air.”"

--- Based on this article, it honestly sounds like Stanford is still his #1.  He's not declaring yet because he's waiting on the SAT score, and if he gets it, he's going to OV to Stanford, and decide after that.

Here's to hoping he gets his score :)

This is what is making me crazy about this recruitment.  I'm not saying Stewart should be scared of the competition at Michigan, but it seems reasonable to look at who else is there at your position and candidly assess your chances of breaking through the logjam to get significant playing time.  In our class, we have Fehoko (who's going on a mission, so doesn't really count for another two years) and Paxton Segina, who is a 2-star recruit.  (Segina may prove to be another underrecruited Stanford success story, but our WR class right now is not exactly overflowing with high-ranking immediate contributors.)  Contra Michigan, with 4-star Ahmir Mitchell, 4-star Dylan Crawford, 4-star Brad Hawkins, and 3- to 4-star Nate Johnson**.

** (Stewart actually ranks ahead of Johnson on ESPN (77 to Johnson's 72) and Rivals (the 74th-ranked WR compared to the 79th-ranked WR), but Johnson is ahead on 247 (92 to 86) and Scout (67th-ranked WR to the 102nd-ranked WR).)

Not only would Stewart leave school with a significantly more prestigious degree by coming to Stanford, Stewart would be the top-ranked WR from this class when he steps foot on campus.  He would be the 4th- or 5th-ranked WR in this class in Ann Arbor, depending on the service.  And as for quality of football, we can look at the final AP rankings for the past six years:

2015 season: #3 Stanford, #12 Michigan
2014 season: Neither team ranked
2013 season: #11 Stanford, (NR) Michigan
2012 season: #7 Stanford, #24 Michigan
2011 season: #7 Stanford, #12 Michigan
2010 season: #4 Stanford, (NR) Michigan

Sure, Michigan may have a longer tradition of football excellence, but if you're concerned about the best place to play football right now, get a degree, and prepare yourself for the NFL, there just isn't a comparison.

While Harbaugh might have recruited wide receivers who are more highly rated than Stewart, that doesn't mean Harbaugh has over-recruited him.  Given Harbaugh's emphasis on the run game (and thus on wide receivers who can run-block), Stewart, who is 6'3.5" and could probably put 200 lbs on his frame, might be a better fit for Harbaugh's scheme than a couple of the guys who did commit to Michigan.

Ultimately, we have no idea where Stewart is in the WR pecking order for Michigan.  Remember, Harbaugh showed no hesitation to start several walk-on wide receivers at Stanford, and those tended to be bigger "possession reveiver" guys who could run-block.

Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 01-26-2016

If "too much emphasis on academics" is a concern, WTF did he apply to Stanford and visit the campus three times?  Is Stanford really going to lose Stewart because the admissions guy scared him away with the "this school is hard" mantra quoted in the story on his Stanford visit?  As was said earlier, it's one thing for your recruiting rivals to bring this stuff up to dissuade recruits, but for your own school to do it, ugh.  If I was Shaw I would be flying around on my broom pissed off, especially given all the admissions casualties this cycle already.

Based on everything that has been made public it sure seems like Stewart was a Stanford lock before Stanford's admissions office put the fear of god into him.  Now, can Shaw and co. get Stewart to ignore or look passed the overzealous admissions guy, and comfortable enough to sign with Stanford?  We'll see.

I liked Edmonds, Bisharat, and Ulloa, and obviously Robertson, but Stewart was the guy I wanted the most after the DL and David Long in this class.  Really want to see him at Stanford.
