Interesting. 6'5" (listed from 294-305 lbs. on different sites). Had offers from bunch of smaller and Ivy schools. Recently offered by Virginia. Then last week offered by Oklahoma, Kentucky and Purdue on same day. Decommitted from William & Mary a few hours ago. Mentions an AP class in one of his tweets.

Pressure's on for Class of 2014. Little margin for error and Shaw better deliver.

Truly disappointing finish to this recruiting season, barring some out-of-the-blue development.  Who knows, maybe the guys we managed to land this year end up blowing the doors off of the college football world over the next 4 years.  That would not be too surprising with Burns, Owusu, and Kalambayi, in particular.  Perhaps Cotton and Taboada are revelations at the TE position.  But over the long haul we really can't afford to keep swinging and missing on top-ranked players if we want to continue to challenge for BCS bowls.

I think this year, to some degree, our continued success may have been partially offset by the resurgence of a couple of our rivals: UCLA and Notre Dame.  Every year we seem to battle over a sizeable number of good recruits with those two schools in particular (to a lesser degree you coud also throw in Michigan), and the recent success of those programs may have hurt us a bit.

But this situation bears watching.  Last year was the first recruiting year with Shaw at the helm and, obviously, was a fantastic success.  This year, very disappointing.  Up to now most of the posts I've seen on here about the 2014 class have been very optimistic.  Personally, at this point, I'm taking a wait-and-see approach.

I for one am completely confident that there is a lot of over-reacting going on here.  I love our current class, and I'm pumped for our 2014 class.

Could be a depth chart/playing time issue.  I have a closefriend who had an offer from Stanford for another varsity team sport.  He decided to go to Amherst instead because he knew would be a star there.  He regrets the decision to this day.

Yup.

Anyway, when weighting 2012 vs. 2013 you have to consider 2012 was the bigger class, both in the literal sense (more players, duh) and in the figurative sense (good publicity for the program). And if you have to have an off class, better that it be a small one (meant literally).

The good thing here is that while the incoming players aren't world beaters, there's not any chaff as far as I can tell -- they haven't been reaching for guys in a panic, which is good.

However, it puts a lot of pressure in the coaching staff to deliver a high-quality class in 2014. Not a lot of margin for error; they could fall short even while doing a pretty good job (viewed in isolation.) So we'll see. I don't think there's a lot of reason to panic, to be honest.

I think it's always hard for alumni to think that kids prefer other schools -- how the heck can that be? 

But when Stanford is putting out such a good, NFL ready football product it makes it even tougher.

In the end, they are kids and kids think like kids.

I've always wanted Stanford just to consistently get good, solid kids for their programs and it looks like we are.

That's exactly how I feel.  In the past, we could rationalize that Stanford is not a contender.  Nowadays, I really can't understand how an admitted athlete (or any other student for that matter) would turn the opportunity to go to Stanford.  Stanford is indeed a special and justified case in terms of perplexed alums.  I follow Ohio State and the fans always complain about students picking other schools.  When a recruit picks Stanford, they always understand and wish the kid luck.

That was how it was with Noor Davis last year. Many Georgia fans were disappointed, but they all understood the academic and football combination was hard to beat.

When we didn't know whether Smythe, Allen, Woods or Cunningham would commit, I had the best feeling about Cunningham.  He was the only one who seemed very focused on academics in his interviews.  Smythe decided not to follow Ryan Burns and Francis Owusu on Twitter after they followed him post-visit (I'm told that means a lot more for teenagers than for the rest of us).  Devon Allen waited forever to submit his Stanford application even though he kept mentioning us in his top two.  His future might be in track and Oregon makes a lot of sense, although our new head coach seems promising.  Xavier Woods came out of nowhere, maybe not enough time to take all the right classes or retake tests?  Was he offered once CB Johnny Johnson did not get in?  Cunningham visited at a time when he would not be able to bond with fellow recruits, but all along he seemed genuinely interested in Stanford.  Let's hope the rumors of him not getting in are false.

Xavier Woods was offered in the fall, IIRC.
