RE: 2026 San Francisco Giants -
Giants - 09-21-2026
With the merciful end of the season looming, I took a look at our season win predictions. It was a reminder of happier days when the enthusiasm of spring reigned supreme.
Needless to say, no one was close to forecasting the debacle of the last six months.
Final numbers will be posted on Sunday.
RE: 2026 San Francisco Giants -
Giants - 09-28-2026
Final win total: 65
Predictions:
PAsportsfan - 78
Papa John - 81
skip - 82
cardcrimson - 83
Giants - 85
Leftcoast - 85
triangle2 - 86
BobK - 87
pefloresjr - 90
Phogge - 92
old spanish trail - 92
Mick - 94
One has to dig deep into the wreckage of this season to find a single gem but I think I may have found one - Bo Davidson looks like he could be the long term answer in RF.

Injuries really hurt but more so was the thinking that relief pitching wasn’t important
RE: 2026 San Francisco Giants -

I was definitely overly optimistic. In my defense, the Giants won 13 of the 23 games I attended this year, so it wasn't my bad mojo at play. If they won at a similar clip for the rest of the season, they would have won 91 games and would be in the wild card pool!
Cheers,
Pete F.

The secret sauce to winning at Oracle has been pitching and defense. Posey pulled an “opposite George” by beefing up the offense at the expense of pitching and defense. It was a failure. It’s time to return to the tried and true formula.
On a positive note, we did see a significant improvement in team speed late in the season. Hopefully, that will carry over into next year.
Hey Pete - maybe all the Giants fans at The Cardboard can chip in to buy you a season ticket. ;)

- 20-20 Seasons: Bo Davidson, Lisbel Diaz, and Cam Maldonado each hit at least 20 home runs and stole 20 bases, showcasing strong power-speed combos in the minors. Dakota Jordan fell just shy of the 20-20 mark. He had 21 steals, but finished with 19 home runs. Jordan would have likely been part of that club as well if he did not miss over a month of the minor league seasons.
- MLB Promotions: Bo Davidson debuted in the majors, stealing a base in his first game, while other top prospects like Diaz and Maldonado continue to impress across multiple affiliates.
- The San Jose Giants pitched a combined no-hitter in a playoff game.
- 1st round pick Phil Flora was promoted to AA where he struck out four in two innings and looked dominant in a playoff game.

Three ideas for 2027.
1. Arraez seemed to like it here, he ended up the fifth best fielding 2B in MLB. Get him back, give him the big contract.
2. Trade Schmitt (or Chapman), Koss, and the rest of the flotsam and jetsam for some excellent pitching.
3. Extend the youth movement in the outfield.
SF Giants player review 2026: Luis Arraez was the player SF needed, but not the one it deserved
RE: 2026 San Francisco Giants -

Schmidt might be our best player.
RE: 2026 San Francisco Giants -

Can’t trade Chapman and his $100 million+ contract without his permission and that ain’t happening.
Trading Schmitt appears the most likely possibility*. Heck, even if he is fully healthy, it is not a certainty that he will be at 2B on Opening Day. Both Cox and Mayer will get a long look once the labor dispute is settled.
* I read one article that suggested trading him for a SP is a strong possibility. That certainly made sense to me given that 3B is his best position and that spot belongs to Chapman. And, of course, the desperate need in SF for starting pitchers.

Casey's Rtot at 3B is +5, at every other position, it is clearly in the negative. He should be at 3B or traded.

With Chapman locked in at 3B, SF may be looking for teams that could use a 3B and are willing to trade a mid-rotation SP in return.
How about a trade with Seattle: Schmitt for Emerson Hancock*. The Mariners need a 3B and Hancock fits the definition of a mid-rotation guy.
* I can’t take credit for this suggestion. It was initially posed by a national baseball writer. Since it makes so much sense, I’m adding to this post.

Deavers had a pretty amazing season. His career high in home runs is 38, he had 37 this past season and 19 of them were at home. Not only that, he led the league in both range factor, and range factor per 9 innings. And he was a doubles machine with 36 doubles. 98 RBIs, 88 runs scored. He slashed .258/.340/.525/.865 with a 133 OPS+, finishing 19th in the league. He played in 148 games, leading the Giants in games played (JHLee was second in games played.
Incidentally, the Giants finished 15th in MLB in stolen base percentage. Above 80% were:
- Jung Hoo Lee, 12/13
- Jonah Cox, 16/20
- Luis Arraez, 10/10
- Casey Schmitt, 9/10
- Grant McCray, 8/8
- Willy Adames, 5/7
- Christian Koss, 5/5
Everyone else was below league average or just stole 1-2 bases.

Very nice Devers stats indeed, but how did he do in April and May and June, and in close games, i.e., when his at-bats really mattered? By the all star break, the Giants were already ~ 20 games behind the Dodgers and the rest of the season had a bit of a spring training vibe. Sort of like Nick Kurtz for the A's in 2025. Not as impactful when your team is well on pace to lose almost 100 games.

Terrible in March/April. From May 1 onward, one of the best hitters in MLB. He wasn't the problem. And FWLIW, he hit much better as a DH than as a 1B, .825 OPS to .948 OPS.
As for his clutch stats, he was actually weakest when the team was ahead (.749 OPS) versus behind (.863 OPS) or tied (.994 OPS). He wasn't the problem.

LOL, this is kind of a meta-moneyball article:
https://www.wsj.com/sports/baseball/tampa-bay-rays-bunt-moneyball-2e02d447?st=3GqSYL&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink
Basically, one of the first conclusions of moneyball was “don’t bunt” because trading an out for advancing a runner is not worth it. However, the meta moneyball lesson is to get players who possess skills that have been devalued by baseball writers large, and because of moneyball, one of those skills is now the ability to lay down a good bunt. Ergo, the Rays have made a killing out of finding players, cheaply, who are capable of bunting well. And, because nobody else bunts, pitchers panic when presented with a bunt in front of them.
Per the article, the Rays have laid down 134 bunts, and gotten 49 bunt hits, which comes to an amazing .366 average, while bunting (even if you consider sacrifices batting attempts)!

I'd be curious about the Giants bunting for a hit. They had 22 sacrifice bunts in 2025, and almost doubled it to 41 in 2026. Supposedly, they had 14 hits in 28 situations in which they tried to bunt for a hit.

At the beginning of 2025, the Giants were ranked the 28th best farm system, then 19th at the beginning of this year:
There's a new No. 1 in farm system rankings
At the end of 2026, the Giants were awarded Farm System of the Year at the MiLB Awards Show:

BTW, Camilo Doval struck out four in two innings against the Dodgers at the end of the season. Maybe a player in 2027?

Patrick Bailey homered for the Guardians in their game 1 ALCS win over TB. His second HR of the postseason.

Cleveland, or Manager Stephen Vogt did something for him. Bailey's OPS+ was 92 in Cleveland...it was 16 in SF, and he averaged 74 during his SFG career. His caught stealing percentage increased from 24% to 32%.

He still can’t hit lefties (3-30) with CLE. The best move Posey made this year was dumping Bailey. SF is better off without him. I think a healthy Susac will be a significant improvement at C next season.
