Bill Greason, 100 years old.

He was a teammate of Mays when both played for the Birmingham Black Barons in 1948.  Later he played for a short time with the Cardinals.

By the way, darn good guess by Mick.  Shantz is the second oldest former big league at age 99.

Justin Verlander, new starting pitcher for the Giants, won his last Cy Young at age 39. He is now 42, and a candidate for Comeback Player of the Year...along with being a candidate for the Cy Young award.

Only three pitchers have won the Cy Young at an age older than Verlander was when he won his last Cy Young. Who were they? One of them was a Giant.

Yes on Perry. He is #2 on the list, age 40 & 17 days, 21-6, 2.73 ERA, got 22 of 24 first place votes.

Randy Johnson won his last at age 38, he's #6 on the list.

Nolan Ryan never actually won the Cy Young. Closest he came was finishing second in 1973 when he was 21-16 with 383 strikeouts. Ryan led the league in both strikeouts and walks, the second of six seasons in which he achieved that feat.

The other two played for the Sox.

Yes, indeed! Early Wynn is the third oldest pitcher to be awarded the Cy Young. Wynn pitched in four decades, from 1939 to 1963. He won the 1959 Cy Young when just one CY award was given for both leagues. He was 22-10, 3.17 ERA, led the league in innings pitched and walks. Also played in both all star games that year and was third in MVP Voting. Just 2.8 WAR. Hall of Fame Career, 300-244 overall. He beat out Sam Jones of the Giants (21-15) and fellow ChiSox, Bob Shaw, who was 18-6 with a 2.69 ERA. BTW, this was the year that Roy Face went 18-1.

In 1932, MIT grad (mechanical engineering) Philip Young owned a molded rubber products company. His hobby was golf and in an important match, he missed a putt that he felt he should have made. He took his ball to a dentist, who x-rayed the ball. Sure enough, the core of the ball was off center, basically couldn't roll straight.

For the next three years, he set out to make the perfect golf ball, one that would roll straight and true, and he and fellow MIT grad Phil Bommer set out to develop the highest quality golf ball. The company's secretary, Helen Robinson, had beautiful penmanship, and she created the logo for the company (see below). They x-rayed every ball to ensure that the center was perfect.

Their sales strategy was to go straight to the top. They sold the balls through professionals, first club pros, and then they got it into the hands of as many playing pros as possible. In 1949, at the U. S. Open at Medinah, their ball was played for the first time by a majority of pros, including the winner, Cary Middlecoff. Today, 80% of all touring pros play Titleist balls.
