As Carl Yastrzemski once said, “You’re not in the big leagues until Bob Sheppard announces your name”.

Wow, never would have guessed him, public address announcer with two rings. Although over the years I have actually regaled many with my Bob Sheppard impression.

What Bay Area local Basketball Hall of Fame member was drafted by an NFL team and what was his contribution to defensive football?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 02-01-2022

No idea at all. KC Jones was never drafted I believe.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 02-01-2022

KC was the 30th pick of the Rams in the 1955 NFL Draft. Came to camp and displayed aggressiveness at corner. Hit the receiver at the LOS and as much as he could downfield. Defensive coach Faulkner went to the rulebook and couldn't find anything against it and immediately began teaching the technique to his DB's. Thus "bump and run" was born. Jones played one exhibition game and left camp to play with the Celtics.

Hmm well at least I mentioned KC lol

Yes. Some Norm Van Brocklin information gleaned from Wikipedia:

1. Retired after the aforementioned NFL championship (Eagles) and being the AP and UPI MVP, and immediately was appointed as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.
2. Still holds the NFL single game passing record of 554 yards, set in 1951.
3. Twice led the NFL in punting.
4. East Bay man (Acalanes High School).
5. Died five weeks after Bob Waterfield, with whom he famously platooned on the Rams.

What Stanford players won the once important Pop Warner Trophy?

Garrett
Plunkett
Elway
Milburn
Vardell
Burford?

The easy ones

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 02-01-2022

To be clear this is the award begun in 1950 to honor the top senior player on the West Coast, not to be confused with the Pop Warner Little Scholars award given by the Pop Warner leagues.

So Bobbbbbb has:
1953 Garrett
1959 Burford
1970 Plunkett
1982 Elway
1991 Vardell
1992 Milburn

Seven left.

Guy Benjamin?

Is the trophy still awarded?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 02-01-2022

Benjamin in 1977. The award was ended in 2004.

The Voit Award was similar but not limited to seniors. Stanford players won it six times between 1951 and 1978. One Stanford player won it twice.

Six Warners and six Voits to go Boys.

I'll guess for five of them

1953 Garrett
1959 Burford
1969 Plunkett
1970 Plunkett
1977 Benjamin

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 02-01-2022

Eric... Garrett '53, Plunlett '69/'70, Benjamin '77. Not Burford. The other two were twenty years apart.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 02-01-2022

Warner Jeff Simeon

John Brodie?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 02-02-2022

Hard to believe that Jon Arnett beat out Brodie for the ‘56 Voit. Brodie was a consensus All American (Heeeesman winner Hornung was NOT) and Arnett was not a first team AA (Jim Swink and Jim Brown were). Good guess Eric the Red.
