Good article.   In the end if you aren't making mistakes in sports from time to time you likely aren't doing enough.

A soccer team that is never offside is not aggressive enough.
A PG without any turnovers is not creative enough.
A volleyball team without any service errors is not serving tough enough.

Viewers will groan when a player serves long or into the net at a crucial point in the match, and might think, "Just get it in!" But if you send over a cupcake, you'll be eaten alive. Good serving can't be risk-free.

Nobody said it should be. 11 service errors and two aces in three sets isn't great (Minn). 6 service errors and two aces is a whole lot better (Wisc). Against Penn State, the girls had 4 service errors and 5 aces. Personally, I'd take the performance against Penn State any day, but to your point, the girls must have been really serving tough against Minnesota.

Added another example above, by the way.

Card winning 3-0 then 3-0 and again 3-0 is indeed great. Tough serving wins championships

Plummer, Hentz, and Gray on the all conference team.

Not quite equivalent.   Cheating, especially by ole' Bill, is not consistent with the spirit of the game.   Aggressive play is not the same as cheating.  And in college if you are cheating you might end up on probation.

In volleyball over the season if you aren't hitting a few service errors a set, you aren't doing enough.  Inevitably some games a team will end up with a few more errors than other games, all part of a normal distribution around the mean.   Hambly wasn't worried about it.  The team wasn't worried about it.   So all was good.

Looked to me like Wisconsin wasn't going to prevail even if Stanford became tentative and risk-averse on serves (Volleyball's turtle mode if you will) but why change the season long philosophy in the Final Four?  Especially if the team is ahead on points late in every set?

What Boston Card is trying to say that’s the all tournament team. Lol lol.

Hehe, I edited two misspelled names in BC's post (let's blame autocorrect), but I missed "conference" in place of "tournament"!

So what's next year's outlook for Stanford Women's Volleyball with the "core four" and graduate transfer Gates leaving?

What’s the outlook?

A lot of fun, with no pressure.

Wins and losses? Who knows...

Lots of highly rated talent, little experience. Setter is a question mark since Xu is injured, probably an ACL. There is a walk-on setter coming, and Fidelak can set.

I'm so bummed I won't get to watch this team on the court for Stanford again. What a legendary group. I also regret I didn't get on the band wagon earlier--I first started paying closer attention to the team in the 2017 season in their run up to losing to Florida.

I found the below tweet by JG pretty hilarious. She's been sitting on it for 3+ year, so patiently. She could have posted her retweet in 2017 when she was named 1st team AA (but lost in the semi-finals) and certainly last year when she repeated 1st team and led her team to the mountain top. Instead, she rolled the dice and waited until she threepeated her 1st team AA and team wins its 3rd in 4 years. That's playing the long game.

Lots of very good teams in D1, and some will return with lots of experience.   Many teams will be very hungry to finally get a chance to win the a team title.

A great setter is rather critical.  No one touches the ball more and everything about the attack depends on their skills and decision making.

Have full faith the 2020 team will compete for the conference title and will advance out of the first weekend of the MCAA tournament.    Anything more than that would depend on coaching and team development.

It will be fun to watch that group knowing they will have many more unknowns to address than the 2019 team.

Don't "do" Twitter, so I have to ask a basic question:  how could you tell when the disparaging tweet was originally sent?  I opened the link, saw the tweet at issue, JG's "aged well" comment, and all the follow-on commentary, but couldn't see a date/time reflecting when the disparaging tweet was first sent.

Any edification appreciated.

BTW, many of the comments were hilarious - the cat one particularly amusing (and I'm not a cat lover).

The date of the original tweet shows up in the Twitter app. Maybe it doesn't show if you look at it via the web site. I remember not seeing when I first looked. It's from 17 Dec 2016.

I don't profess to be a twitter expert, but I found the original timestamp to the right of the original poster's name.

Oh, I just clicked on the link from Chrome (Desktop), there's no timestamp. Click on the original message and it will pop up with the original message, including the timestamp.

Previously, I was using my mobile browser (even in desktop mode, it shows timestamp to the right of the OP's name)

Thanks compsci and magnus.

And thanks to Farmboy for linking the tweet - it and the commentary was an enjoyable read.

Just saw this amazing stat.  Madeline Gates was set 80 times in 20 sets in the NCAA tournament.  She had a single hitting error the entire tourney.  That is friggin amazing.

Gates is indeed an amazing stat... grad student.
