Some others:

The whiniest human ever to win an NBA championship hit a homer in the bigs at age 20?  Danny Ainge

NBA Hall of Famer who pitched a shutout in the majors?  Dave  DeBusschere

Michael Vick was a dog-fighter. What hall of famer was a cock-fighter?  No idea - and I couldn't come up with a snarky answer

What hall of famer played for the Globetrotters?  Bob Gibson

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-06-2023

Nehemiah played three years, had 43 catches and at least one concussion.
Always want to hear Stanford connection stories. Was Bob Hayes at the USA vs. USSR meet?
Whiniest human ever -- I thought -- was Rick Barry, but he didn't play baseball.
Ty Cobb for cock-fighting.
Wilt Chamberlain played for Globetrotters for a year.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Mick - 03-06-2023

One of the first baseball cards I ever had was Ron Reed, a 6'6", 215 pound pitcher for the Braves. He had a 19 year career in MLB and went the Dennis Eckersley route: first half as a starting pitcher, second half as a setup man. Had 146 victories and 103 saves. 3.46 career ERA, very solid. His last year as a starter led the league in fewest home runs given up. He was Atlanta's all-star representative in 1968 with an 11-10 record.

That was really his rookie year. He pitched two or three games in the two prior years because he was playing basketball for the Detroit Pistons. He was a second-team guy, playing 11-12 minutes a game.  Good player, both as rebounder and scorer, kind of an Iguodala type. He was listed as 6'5" for the Pistons, so apparently he grew an inch.

Is Ron Reed the answer to one of your questions?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-06-2023

Vic Janowitz, Voldemort and ? Pirate Catcher

Otto Graham, Pro Football MVP and NBA Basketball
Sweetwater Clifton, early black NBAer and ? Negro League baseball

So was Burt Reynolds. There are a lot of players turned actors. Fred Williamson, Merlin Olson, too. Correct on Marichal, but you knew that. . . .

Should have been more specific. What baseball HOFer played for the Globetrotters?

In 1979, a girl in my freshman dorm was from Dallas, had gone to Hockaday Girls School and grew up in a fancy neighborhood. She lamented that during her childhood, her family had to move to another neighborhood. Why, I asked, and she told me her neighborhood had gone black. I didn't understand what she meant, and she explained that two black families had moved in. I was flabbergasted. Her parents ended up selling their home to Bob Hayes. . . .

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-06-2023

Phogge has the Marichal question and answer. I just didn’t include it

1979 and you weren’t aware? More on Saturday lol

Bob Gibson was a Globetrotter.

What Stanford WBB player was maybe still is a Globetrotter?

Naive. Grew up in Danville in a fairly nice neighborhood. Black family moved in nextdoor and never thought about it--just another family. Kudos to my parents for the right kind of upbringing.

Correct on Gibson.

Lili Thompson was with the Globetrotters for a while. I believe I heard she moved on.
