Re: Class of 2016 - socalstanfan1 - 01-12-2016

disappointing news about Edmonds, without a doubt.  But this is what I was referencing in an earlier post: this may be news to us, but might not be such brobdingnagian news to the coaches.  We don't know how many of the 19 committed students are truly, firmly committed at this moment, so there may in fact be enough room for a lot of the players still in play, once all the dust settles.

I would also take the designation CB or S with a grain of salt.  We've had a number of players come in listed as safeties who switched to CB (Lyons, etc.)

no one is admitted until they see your 7th semester grades. And you can get dinged after they see your 8th semester grades. That happened last year.

People who are speculating about guys like Edmonds and Robertson really should subscribe to rivals, if only for the next month.  This is the time that andy produces the best content.  He has access to info that we can't possibly know because he spends a ton of time talking with stanford's recruits and people close to them.

What makes the most sense to me is that he got dinged by his semester grades and chose what he felt was the next most academically prestigious school.
The real reason is anyone's guess, though. Wonder if it will eventually come out.

Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 01-12-2016

Read this story, published in mid-December, and convince me Edmonds was dinged by admissions after being accepted, because he decided to coast: https://stanford.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1835341

No way someone works that hard to get admitted and then decides to stop taking school seriously.  There seems to be something more going on than the typical "he would have come but for his grades" meme.

Re: Class of 2016 - BostonCard - 01-12-2016

Quote:"We're just kind of talking about me staying healthy, making sure I continue to do great in school. Make sure I'm ready for the 2016 season at Stanford."

Obviously, admissions is always contingent on maintaining grades, but this doesn't strike me as a quote from someone who was about to blow off his senior year in college.  All the more so because the admission news was delivered in mid-December, so he spent most of his seventh semester not knowing he got in.  If he had been borderline, we would have waited for his seventh semester grades before admitting.  So, either he majorly blew something off in the last couple weeks of the semester, or was in major trouble before, or something else.

What this program has accomplished over the last 6 years is quite extroadinary given the academic standards. Its tiresome from a fan's perspective (not to mention that of the players, parents, and coaches) that it is so difficult to get good students admitted and enrolled.

Re: Class of 2016 - BobK - 01-12-2016

Outsider facts are facts whether you like or enjoy.  Sorry.  And please read when he was accepted.  November.  Wish it didn't also.

Just subscribe to Rivals and read the message boards there if you want more information than in the free articles. Andy has a lot of great content.

I disagree.  I love that the admission standards are high.  That's part of what's special at Stanford: you have athletes that are genuinely good students, unlike at places like Duke and UDFG, where you have athletes who merely share a campus with good students.

Edit to add: Of course, one can take this point too far (and many on this board think that there was a time in the not-too-distant past when Stanford did take it too far).  But the current admissions standards seem entirely reasonable.

Quote:Cal scored a rare football victory over Stanford on Tuesday when four-star cornerback Nygel Edmonds of Chattanooga, Tennessee, flipped from the Cardinal and committed to the Bears, according to multiple recruiting sources.

Edmonds, a 6-foot, 180-pounder from the McCallie School for Boys, had committed to Stanford last April and was admitted to school last month, according to Rivals.com.

This again...any other sources pale in comparison especially during this period in the recruiting cycle.

We're getting all excited over flipping for or against us.  This stuff happens, and it will happen more and more we become an "elite" option. Good luck to Nigel, wherever he might play, and cool down Cardboard dudes and dudesses.  Life goes on, obla di obla da, and in the end it is only a bloody game....

Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 01-12-2016

David Shaw, with a 100% graduation rate and 3 Pac-12 championships in 4 years, should get some benefit of the doubt on the guys to whom he wants to offer a scholarship, when it comes to admissions.

I remember Stanford admissions declining RB Joe Igber.  The guy went on to work on the Big Dig project in Boston right out of Ca.l as a civil engineer.  But he never would have made it at Stanford.

I suppose one could also say that Stanford admissions, having admitted classes that have achieved both a 100% graduation rate and won 3 Pac-12 championships in 4 years, should get some benefit of the doubt in evaluating their decisions.

... and we have no idea if admissions and Shaw are at odds over this or not.

I didn't say I disagree with the academic standards. Its tiresome, though, that every January and February we learn of good student-athletes, recruited to Stanford, who commit and then are denied (for whatever reason). I suppose I find it to be a sour note for each close to the recruiting cycle. But in some ways that's life with Stanford admissions. And it makes the last 5 years simply remarkable.

Re: Class of 2016 - washingtonismoney - 01-12-2016

The question is whether you value false positives or false negatives. Certainly we can all concede there are a bunch of denied players who, in all probability, would've been just fine a Stanford. Then again, we can't say there are too many guys who shouldn't've gotten in. My suspicion is that admissions is more concerned about false negatives than positives, and therefore thinks it's doing a good job.

Very well said. Clearly, the admissions office and football team have found the right level of academic requirement and providing flexibility given an applicants exceptional talent outside of the classroom. They've put together a winning combination so far.

I don't think Shaw's 3 Rose Bowls in 4 years should force admission's hands one iota. They need to hold the line of integrity. I don't want Stanford to become a football factory. To CTCard's point, if they slackened the requirements, perhaps we don't have 100% graduation rates to boast of. If managing to a 95% GSR could guarantee a national championship, I'd consider it, but the truth is, there are no guarantees, so you stick to your foundational beliefs.
