Re: Class of 2016 - washingtonismoney - 01-11-2016

Quote:At the first full day of the American Football Coaches Association convention in San Antonio, I asked three Pac-12 recruiters from different schools who they believed has the top class in the league. Without hesitation, all agreed the answer was Stanford. While the Cardinal rank behind USC in the Pac-12, Stanford does have a rather impressive collection of talent that is the 15th-best class in the country.

I asked a Stanford assistant if he felt the same way, and even he admitted this is the best class his program has landed since 2012. That 2012 class featured first-round draft pick Andrus Peat, Outland Trophy winner Joshua Garnett, All-Pac-12 selection Kyle Murphy and numerous other impact players. Obviously, top-ranked quarterback K.J. Costello drew high praise from the Cardinal assistant, but he was also extremely excited about the collection of defensive backs heading to Palo Alto, California, such as four-stars Treyjohn Butler and Nygel Edmonds.

It's certainly possible that I missed it, but I don't recall Bobk ever saying that Robertson wasn't coming. Is there a link to his post?

The last I heard was Robertson saying that Stanford was his leader but he had to get his SAT up 100 points to qualify and he was going to retake it. Is there more recent news than that? If so, once again could you provide a link.

Re: Class of 2016 - ChicagoCard - 01-11-2016

Maybe there is some info or news behind the paywall on Rivals or Scout.

I don't think you understand what "please provide a link/source" means.

Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 01-11-2016

FWIW, my understanding - that led to doubt about Robertson and Stanford - was reading of speculation Robertson wasn't coming because there was concern over his admission credentials.  Then, last week Robertson came out and said publicly that he needs 100 more points on his SAT to gain Stanford admission.  Adding, that he would re-take the SAT on Jan. 23 and pay for an expedited result so he could get it in a week, ostensibly enough time for him to visit Stanford before signing day if his score is high enough for admission.

Now, he did also say that if he is admitted, it doesn't mean he will go to Stanford for sure.  Reading between the lines, he'll want to visit the campus if he is admitted, and if he likes it enough, then he would commit to Stanford.  That's all based on publicly available information on the interwebs.

Re: Class of 2016 - pauloalto - 01-11-2016

Also, do you mean to say he is not coming for a visit or he is not coming to Stanford as a student?

Re: Class of 2016 - kuz - 01-11-2016

Just join Rivals if you actually want to follow recruiting closely.

And there is Kaufusi: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865645252/High-school-football-Easts-Tangaloa-Kaufusi-commits-to-Stanford.html

Re: Class of 2016 - BobK - 01-11-2016

Re Robertson.  The test results from the January SAT isn't available before the signing day.  But it wouldn't be too late to sign. However Outsider it's the longest of long shots.

Kaufusi may end up surprising some people.  He's got as low a profile as almost any recruit we've seen, and that may have suppressed some of the usual recruiting hype.  He lives in a state with less media coverage of recruiting, did not attend any football camps, and barely uses twitter at all.  Also, the maxprep stats appear to be wrong.  The Desert News article indicates that he has 3x the tackles and 6x the sacks shown on his maxpreps profile.  Also, remember that the Kaufusi family has close to a dozen former D1 football players, so the genes are definitely there.  I'm not saying he's a 4-star recruit, but the ratings we see online probably don't do him justice, and he probably has a good amount of upside.

Robertson said he was planning on using rush reporting, which, if I understand it correctly would get it there in a few days, before signing date.

This was my understanding as well, but I just checked the SAT website, and it appears that scores aren't available until February 11, and the rush reporting service only applies to scores that are already available.  In other words, the rush service as it is explained on the SAT website (https://sat.collegeboard.org/scores/send-sat-scores#rushReporting) appears to differ than the DawgNation article in which Robertson said he'd get the scores back in 5 days, unless I'm just misinterpreting something, which is always possible.

If he won't have his score before signing day, I would have to agree with BobK that it's highly unlikely that he'd risk losing a spot in another recruiting class by waiting until after signing day to see if he qualified for Stanford.  I'd be super impressed with him if he did, but the pressure to sign that day will be intense.  Of course, as a 5-star ATH from Georgia, I'm guessing UGA would hold a spot for him (and with only 16 commits right now, Georgia may not have to hold a spot for him, as there may be room anyway).

Here's hoping, however, that what Robertson said about the 5-day rush service is true, and he'll be able to get a sufficient score to get admitted.  We'll know before too long, obviously.

Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 01-11-2016

How long after LOI day did Erik Lorig sign?  I remember Tyrell Pryor waited until March before he signed.  So I don't buy the "there will be tremendous pressure to sign on LOI day" meme at all.

No matter what happens with the SAT result date, there will be time for Robertson to delay his LOI to wait for a Stanford admissions decision.  The part that baffles me is why you wouldn't just visit on Jan 15 with the other members of the class, to get that out of the way and check that box.  Hell, if he decided he didn't like Stanford after being there, he could then just sign his LOI on Feb. 3 without any complication to UGA, Bama or ND.

Out of the approximately 3,000+ kids that sign with a FBS program every year, how many of them are very high-profile recruits that wait to sign until after NSD?  One? Two?  Sure, it happens.  But pointing out a few examples of kids waiting to sign until later doesn't disprove my point that there will be a lot of pressure to sign that day.

I hope he gets the score he needs and comes.  But the signing day pressure is real.  There is obviously a mythology built up around signing day that is tough for kids to get past, with the high-ranking undecided kids getting live national TV at their announcement ceremonies.  And there is the more pressing concern of a school filling up its available scholarships on signing day, not wanting to risk leaving a spot open for a 5-star that may not come.  I hope he's one of the few that puts aside the hype of signing day and waits to make the right decision.

That said, I agree with you that waiting to take official visits (and not just to us, but to other schools as well) is an unusual decision.  Not sure why he doesn't do as you suggest and get a sense of each place so he can make an informed decision in the limited amount of time he'll have after the test score comes back and before signing day (if that's how it will work out).

I certainly take it as a positive that the three in state schools (all decent football programs) have offered him, it sounds like people who see him most think he can play.

Re: Class of 2016 - OutsiderFan - 01-11-2016

Robertson visited Ca.l instead of Stanford.  That has to be the biggest SMH moment of the recruiting year.

I think the one that BobK encouraged us to write off was Crawford.  Robertson is a slim chance, but he has a chance.

Amen. Though maybe we're better off with him not visiting, as the two schools he's used his official visits to see (C.al and ND) appear to no longer be in consideration.    ;)

Seriously, though, I don't get it.  I wonder if he used the time out west to squeeze in a quick tour of the Stanford campus and talk with a few coaches.
