Re: Class of 2017 - TrumpCard - 02-04-2016

McCulloch was hardly the only loss at LB. The board early in the cycle seemed promising. Kelly, Lamar, Winston, Simms, Carmouche, etc.

I agree the staff needs at least two on top of Reid, but that is hardly a problem.

Re: Class of 2017 - BostonCard - 02-04-2016

No, but McCulloch was admitted; the rest of the guys didn't get that far. [NB, doesn't mean they weren't admissible.]

Article on ESPN on the 2017 QB's, with heavy Stanford mention...

http://espn.go.com/blog/pac12/insider/post?id=97773

Part of it is behind the paywall, but three guys mentioned here are in front of it:

Dylan McCaffrey (ranked #1 by ESPN)
Jake Bentley (#2)
Bailey Hockman (#4)

I haven't followed the 2017 recruiting much, so I'm sure this has been asked a lot.

What's our situation with McCaffrey?  Does he not have the grades?  Does he have the grades but he came to camp and just didn't impress as much as the other guys?

Our acute need, however, is for inside and outside linebackers, and we've no one there yet.  Davis has only a year left, Palma just two.  Barton could be great, Jordan Fox is a question mark, and Branch, Perez and Okereke all leave at once, three seasons from now.  On the outside, we have several more years of Tyler, Alfieri and Robinson, perhaps a great three some, but that's it after Kalambayi graduates next year, unless Lane Veach shows more very soon.

I don't think the need is as dire as you portray it.  The staff has a head start because Gabe Reid is scheduled to return from an LDS mission next year.  The 2016 class is not numerous, but Robinson is really elite, and I think Fox may be under-rated given his offers from Georgia, Miami, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.  Also, based on what I've heard, the staff hasn't really whiffed on many guys in the last 2 classes, except maybe Veach.  The 2015 class is a good size as it includes a speedy 4-star recruit (Barton) and two more guys who have gotten good reviews relative to their rating (Branch and Toohill (who I think you confused with Tyler)).  The 2014 class won't be around forever, but all of them used a redshirt, two of them were unanimous 4-star recruits and Perez earned a fair amount of playing time for a moderately recruited player in only his second season.

With all that said, I do see some need at LB.  Jaelan Phillips probably is the guy who Stanford fans should covet the most this year.  His hudl film is worth a watch.  He's just incredible.  Plus, he's a California kids who reports a 4.1 GPA.  Beyond that, the LB pool is a little iffy, unfortunately.

I took you advice and watched the video.  Remarkable wingspan.  He must have extremely strong hands because many of his tackles involved grabbing the jersey of a fast-moving back and when he gets a hand on the runner, it's over.

The latter, I believe. We offered Bentley and Davis Mills after camp. (Hockman reported on Twitter that he had an offer but I don't believe it is accurate.)

For those who haven't been following, many of your questions are likely answered in this thread.

I think Bentley is our top target.

No idea on the grades, but I'm fairly sure Dylan McCaffrey camped along with Davis Mills and Jake Bentley (among others, I'm sure), but that after evaluating those guys and others, Stanford offered Mills and Bentley, but not McCaffrey.

The offer lists are interesting to watch right now:  McCaffrey has 15 reported offers on Rivals, with his best offers (football-wise) being Michigan, LSU, and UCLA.  Mills has 24, with his best offers being us (obviously), Michigan, Michigan State, UCLA, Miami, and Ole Miss.  Bentley has 14, with his best offers being us, Auburn, Georgia, and South Carolina.  Bailey Hockman (who self-reported as having an offer, but isn't universally regarded as having one) has 14, with his best offers being Alabama, FSU, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, and Tennessee.

FYI, of these four guys (Bentley and Mills with solid offers, Hockman with an uncertain offer, and McCaffrey with no offer but nice bloodlines), here are the current recruiting rankings, which show some pretty wide swings between services (I suspect that will shrink a little as more Opening/Elite 11 type evaluations occur and more offers come out):

Mills:
Bentley:
McCaffrey:
Hockman:
So, Rivals thinks Mills is clearly the class of the group with the other three way behind, Scout thinks it's McCaffrey with Hockman way back in the pack, ESPN also thinks it's McCaffrey (but with Bentley and Hockman close, and Mills way back in the pack), and 247 sees all 4 guys as solid and all top 100, but with McCaffrey having an edge.  In other words, who knows?  Whichever guy we pick (or picks us), at least one of the services will think we did very well.  ;)

Re: Class of 2017 - ThePassionOfTheChryst - 02-04-2016

Not only is there a wide range of rankings between services, but they can't even agree on whether McCaffrey is a DT or PP.

DT or PP??? explain please - FrankO - 02-04-2016

I do know pocket/pro-style QB and dual threat QB...

have no idea what DT and PP are

please enlighten me/us

Re: Class of 2017 - Durty Nelly - 02-04-2016

DT  is Dual Threat

PP is Pocket Passer

nice post.  I believe Hunter Johnson camped at Stanford as well so coaches had a look at McCaffrey, Bentley, Mills, Johnson and others, and ended up offering Bentley and Mills.

picking up on BC's comments, I am not if staff has a preference between Bentley and Mills.  Mills was very impressive in games against big opponents this past fall.

Re: Class of 2017 - BobK - 02-05-2016

Appears we will have a class of 16-18 and as usual so hard to tell who might leave hurry like Wild Caff who might have to retire and who might or might not play a 5th year

However we do have 5 commits

McElwain
Head
Parkinson
2 returning from a mission

Lund is a 2017 commit but will go on a mission

If he is at all like his brother, he is a QT (quadruple threat) QB; the rare quarterback who can throw the ball, run the ball, catch the ball, and return punts and kickoffs.  But then again, he will come second in the H-award because he had more games than the guy whose record he broke.

He will also come in second because he only broke a national record whereas the H-award winner broke a conference record.

Another reason he will come in second is that he was throwing, running, catching and returning the ball against poor defenses.  If he played in the SEC he'd have less than half the yards because all SEC defenses are better than any defense he faced.

Re: Class of 2017 - amartinsu13 - 02-05-2016

Haven't seen this idea thrown around: If for some reason we did recruit Dylan McC, would Christian be any more likely to stay another year so he can play on the same team as his brother?  (Even if his brother wouldn't see the field)

A fourth year with Christian McCaffrey would be extra sweet, with or without Dylan.
