Think that may be too broad of a speculation. Not sure if the Mariners were interested, but my guess is that California didn't suit the kid from the Southeast. He turned down a $342 million deal with the Padres for a $300 million deal with the Phillies. Wow.
I guess he figured he’d rather try to scrape by on $300,000,000 and live where he prefers.

My memory is failing me, but I thought I posted something a few days ago that NYC and the Bay Area may not be an enticement for players, and you contradicted that, saying you like it here. I ask you, would you give up $42 million to stay here, or even 15% of a contract? And that doesn't even include cost of living, taxes, etc.

Not me.
But if I was being paid $300,000,000, I’d gladly pay an xtra 42 million or 15 percent in taxes to live where I want. I could scrape by on the meager $150,000,000 or so after taxes. Heck, I’d even be able to leave my kids a few bucks…..

I like it here too, but not everyone does. If someone is willing to take less money to live somewhere they will be happier, more power to them. Of course, a bummer for me since I’m a Pads fan.

Top CA state income tax rate is 13.3%, but about 3/8 of his ball games would be played out of state. He'll get W-2's in every state in which he plays games, so he would file at the lower rate in those states. So he'd pay no tax in Texas, Washington, or Florida, and just 3.07% for Phillies and Pirates games. 42 states have state income taxes. Lowest is Pennsylvania (hello, Phillies and Pirates!) at 3.07%, but then you have to live in Pennsylvania...California is a dream for most people. BTW, of the eight states that don't tax income, most are in the West: Alaska, Wyoming, Nevada, Washington. Others are Florida, Tennessee, Texas, and South Dakota.

Don't think they were outbid. Yankees appear to have matched, and he apparently decided to stay in NY and play as a Yankee. Money isn't all that goes into a decision.

Yep. There are reports that the Yankees bid was not the highest. Giants were reportedly first to offer $360,000,000 over 9.
Gotta get over it, pivot and work to sign Correa or Boegarts and or Nimmo plus an SP, maybe Senga or Bassitt. Can’t blame FO for this one. But If they strike out going forward, this will be a very cold Winter.

Nah, I'm pretty sure the Giants wouldn't go to 10/$400M, which is what it would take to get Judge.
The fact was always that the YANKEES would not be outbid, not the Giants., and the Giants claiming the opposite insulted my intelligence the second I saw that came from the Giants.

Have you spoken with Aaron? His family? His agent? If not, how do you know that 10/$400 was what it would take to get Judge?

Judge says he turned down more money elsewhere to stay with the Yankees.

They weren't outbid. Judge stayed with a lower bid. Not much you can do about that. I'm not sure I'd say the Giants lied, though they did fail.
I will say that this contract will look very, very bad at some point. The Yanquis won't get $360 million of value out of their expensive, 6'7", 282 pound, 31 year old slugger, for certain. No one mentions it, but another tall, post-30 slugger, Kris Bryant -- his contract looks ridiculous. Colorado is on the hook for six more years at $185 million for a bad, part-time player. 14 RBIs last year. Great spend, Rockies.
Farhan must feel snakebit. Judge was probably the only free agent that would have assured more season ticket sales. Now the Giants need to make the hurt stop hurting with other FA's. They got Haniger and Pederson. Be nice if they could get Rodon and one of the FA shortstops (probably Correa) and Japanese pitcher Kodai Senga.

The Giants EASILY could have put out stories that suggested they were unlikely to get Judge. They didn't. They never should have allowed the fans to feel Judge was a possibility, and surprised them if he signed with them.
I'm not gonna say the Giants wanted this Judge to Giants fire fed, they more likely have their heads down and are just working in the FO. But the FO has to have a better sense for public relations with their fans and read the room about how the fan base feels about their inability to sign top free agents, and manage expectations accordingly.
The fans are pissed right now and don't trust the team. It can all change with a few good signings, but this is just not looking like a well-run organization from my vantage point.

I am a fan and I am not pissed. And I do trust the leadership of the franchise.
Many of us knew it was an uphill climb to sign Judge. The Giants did everything possible to bring him to SF. At the end of the day, Judge chose to stay in NY. Oh well….
As Lex said, time to implement Plan B. There are still a number of players who are quite attractive and would look great in a Giants uniform.

Confused if you're a Stanford or Giants fan? If so why do you seem to hate both teams? They both recently went through the most successful periods of success in their histories. I'm pretty happy with them.

Judge received a $400 million/10 year offer from San Diego and said no thanks.
Outsider - when are you going to learn money is not always going to be the answer. Heck, the Pads lost out twice this year on premier free agents despite making substantially bigger bids.
Players choose where they want to play based on multiple factors. In Judge’s case, I would guess that playing on the biggest stage in the game for the most storied franchise was a significant reason for his decision.
Next year, we will go through this process all over again when Ohtani hits the market. Please be ready to be disappointed when he selects the Dodgers as his new employer.

Local media here in San Diego report that the Padres met with Judge at Petco Park yesterday and offered 10-yrs, $400 million. Apparently a last-ditch effort after they lost out with their $342 million bid in the Trea Turner sweepstakes to Philly.
