Geaux Cardinal!  Beat Utah!

The article was pretty spot on until this part...

Quote:I am going to stick with my original prediction all along, because why change it now right? Wisconsin wins it. The Badgers are the 2019 national champions.

And Wisconsin goes back in front, 16-15. Do not tempt the woof gods, my friend.

Yeah, that wasn’t all that smart.

There it is!

Woohoo! National Champs! Congrats to the Stanford women and the senior class!

Gotta admit, compared to the other two championships this year, this was relatively smooth. Except for the match against Utah.

What a team. Just a real pleasure to watch.

Maybe the poll voters should vote Utah #2.

In an absolute shocker (not), Plummer was the most outstanding player.

If there was any remaining doubt, with a third national championship in four years,
Final Four berths every year, the undefeated run through Pac-12 play last year,
despite the national landscape being more competitive than ever, I think
this senior class is the greatest WVB class in program history (even better than
the classes in the '90's, given how strong the competition is now).

And Kathryn Plummer, imo, is the greatest player in program history.

Congrats to this senior class on finishing such an incredible legacy,
and to all of the players and coaches on this tremendous accomplishment.

I completely agree.  I got so tired of the announcers saying over and over that the BIG 10 was the toughest conference when the evidence in front of their eyes screamed the opposite.  We struggled with Utah and quite easily dispatched Minnesota and Wisconsin.

I thought the post-game interview with Hentz and with Hambly was laden with emotion--they were more sad that the journey is now over than happy for the final championship.  It puts it all in perspective.   I was happy for the win but sad that I won't see those seniors on the court again in a Stanford uniform.

Wow! Stanford demolished Penn State, Minnesota and Wisconsin.  B1G is overrated. We all know that Plummer is the real NPOY. Silly NCAA criteria excluded her from being NPOY and All American.

Stellar!  Congratulations Champions,

RE: Women’s volleyball wins the National Championship - M T - 12-21-2019

I'm going to miss these ladies.  If you've been on the Cardboard for a while, you'll know that I follow both WBB & WVB.  As I was leaving the regionals last week, I thought about how I felt a stronger connection to this set of players that I have to previous classes in either sport.  I'm not sure why.  Maybe the fact that it was a larger single class, and (because of their abilities) they've probably accumulated more minutes on the court than others.  Maybe it is that they show (and I'll single out Audriana) such joy when they play (and WVB is structured so they can show that on virtually every point).

I wish that they'd have had John Dunning there, or at least had a taped interview with him about these girls he recruited, how he got such a good group that so complemented each other.

Glad to hear the shout-out to Denise Corlett for being part of all 9 championships.

At the BBQ, I wish I'd asked Madeline Gates just when she decided to graduate early & try to get in Stanford.  I understood her to indicate she really came for the grad school in statistics, but you have to figure she was thinking of trying to join this team, esp. since it was down a middle.  (I'd also like to understand why she didn't talk to Hambly before her acceptance at Stanford.  Maybe she knew she'd definitely be accepted.)  While I'm glad she joined Stanford, I fear the grad transfer rule can be abused to benefit top teams at the expense of other teams.

One of the cool things about Stanford winning 3-0 was it gave the Stanford fans the opportunity to watch the festivities.

IIRC, there were some questions here about whether Hambly has really shown his ability, or whether he has been riding on John Dunning's coat tails.  While I think he has shown his prowess, I understand the questions.  We shall see next year.  It will be interesting.

My understanding from  a video interview is that Gates had applied to grad school at UCLA and Michigan and wasn't accepted to either, Stanford was her 1st choice but last to notify her

RE: Women’s volleyball wins the National Championship - Farm93 - 12-21-2019

That was fun.  Wish I was there.

For Wisconsin everything was going to plan and they were still getting crushed.  Tough serves with the expected error rate from that approach rather than lollipops was definitely going to happen since Wisconsin utilized that approach all season in the mighty BigTen conference.   Though I know that particularly strategy confuses some on this board, there is no doubt that Wisconsin thought serving tougher than Stanford would keep it competitive.   Adding a focus on Plummer receiving the majority of the serves was likely the element they hoped would get them the win.

You could almost hear the Wisconsin coach's thoughts in the coach interview at the break.    (This was our plan. This is all we got.)

I was waiting for someone, anyone, from ESPN to note that Stanford's toughest challenge in the tournament came from a Pac-12 opponent and that the Pac-12 had the better overall RPI, but that didn't happen.     Kiraly, as Pac-10/12 alum, should have had a bit more conference pride, but I realize as the USA coach he didn't want to appear biased.

It was an amazing night, but rather sad time.   Recruiting classes that strong and cohesive don't show up every year.    I just hope everyone will allow the 2020 team to play without constant comparisons to this group.   It is highly unlikely that Stanford will win 3 of the next 4 titles, and that's OK.

29 NCAA team titles in this calendar decade
8 NCAA team titles in this calendar year of 2019 (wow!)

How many of the 10 games would she have had to be in?  Nobody mentioned that as far as I heard.

Yeah, the announcers were talking about how few sets Wisconsin had lost coming into this game, but I didn't hear them remark that Stanford wound up losing only 2 sets (both to Utah) in the tourney.   Nor did they mention that Stanford had to face 3 B1G teams and beat them all in straight sets.  There was the mention that Stanford would have been ranked #1 had Plummer not been injured.

I'm afraid Utah has too many losses to too many teams to be ranked 2nd, but I think they were the 2nd best team, at least amongst those we played. I expect Utah knows that and will build on that.

Wow that seems unusual re acceptances.  Their loss, our big gain.  I thought Gates made a big difference and having only one hitting error in the tournament is just unreal.

This was really a team win.  When you have an all-universe player like Plummer it seems silly to say that, but everyone we put out there tonight had key points.  And we should not forget that those who did not play tonight played a giant role in helping the team prepare in practices.  And their time will come, next year.

RE: Women’s volleyball wins the National Championship - BobK - 12-21-2019

Iirc from chalk talks Plummer needed 4 more sets maybe 5. But we were too good lol. Plummer did come back early and in her first game played only back row.

It you know those doctors. Lol

RE: Women’s volleyball wins the National Championship - BostonCard - 12-21-2019

Just curious... what was Plummer’s attack percentage when hitting from the back row?  I recall only one error, and a bunch of kills.

22, 15, 17, 19, 22, 22, 16, 17, 20

In nine sets against Big Ten opponents, that’s what they managed to score against us. An average of 18.9 points.

Utter. Domination.
