If you've wanted to see GoodGrief as a Chicken Mascot... -
GoodGrief - 09-11-2015
Some of you may know that I used to be the Chicago Bulls mascot. I'm kinda nutty about mascotting (heck, we induced labor on BabyGoodGrief because I had a mascotting gig). Well, hopefully you will see me a lot this football season as the chicken mascot in this Chick-fil-A commercial.

Fun facts about this job:
1. I drank literally 3 gallons of water/Gatorade while shooting this. Still cramped up.
2. The cow is enormous and beautiful. I think her name was Molly. She stars in a lot of Chick-fil-A commercials.
3. When a beautiful and enormous cow makes a sudden move in your direction, you suddenly remember that a cow is a female version of a bull. And you get ready to run--just in case.
Btw, if anybody happens to be best friends with Christopher Guest, uhh, please ask him to cast me in his new Mascots Netflix movie. That would be nice.

Excellent. :)

Molly is indeed beautiful. She looks just like my most favorite cow I ever owned. Her name was Baby, and she was very sweet but could move fast if she thought I had a treat for her.
You look pretty good there, too, GoodGrief.
Love Chick-fil-A!

Great moves GoodGrief in that chicken costume. It's fairly obvious that you know what you are doing, the moonwalk alone brings it to another level.
I love sports mascots and can trace back my mascot fandom to 1984 and the introduction of Crazy Crab at Candlestick. Even though he was considered the "anti-mascot", the few games I attended that year was spent gazing at the Crab in wonder (mostly because the Giants were beyond terrible).
There is an excellent ESPN 30for30 video on the origin and brief history of Crazy Crab out there. Well worth checking out...

Do you get free Chick-fil-A for life?

Great work! That cow looks like she's more likely to lick you to death than run over the top of you. There are others, though....

Thanks for the kind words folks! I had a blast shooting that commercial despite the heat and oxygen deprivation (a natural consequence of mascotting). We did a lot more stuff that got cut out like back flips and back handsprings, but they clearly opted for Awkward Chicken over Athletic Chicken.
Growing up I loved the San Diego Chicken. The idea of being able to run around a sports field with impunity thrilled me. And then the Phoenix Suns Gorilla came out and I was amazed that a mascot could be so athletic. Btw, I'm not gonna lie to you, dunking on a basketball rim is just scary. That thing is build to hold Shaq; it does not move if you fly into it.
Unfortunately, no free Chick-fil-A for life for shooting it, although they did give me a coupon for a free grilled nuggets which I treated myself to afterwards. Hopefully the commercial will air a lot though and I'll be able to buy myself a lot of Spicy Chicken sandwiches with the residuals.
And Kathy, so cool that you grew up with cows. They are so beautiful. Molly did seem like she was getting annoyed at times, and when she snorted and started in my direction, I had visions of bulls sprinting after rodeo clowns...

Cows are OK, but only slightly more sentient than a turnip. Now pigs on the other hand are smart as a whip and cuter than a button.

Uhh, yep, mostly that stupid Da Bull (the one on the top right). Will write more later cuz I gotta get to the gymnastics gym, but here's the brief history: Adorable pot-bellied Benny The Bull had been the lone Chicago Bulls mascot for a gajillion years. After The Gorilla became popular, dunking, athletic mascots came in vogue. The Bulls didn't want to completely scrap Benny as he was firmly established, so they introduced a new mascot, Da Bull. In contrast to lovably cute Benny, Da Bull was made kinda fierce-looking. This caused some problems with little kids.

Count your blessings that you worked with Molly instead of this bull:

No offense, but I just thought the two mascot thing was kinda dumb. I would rather they gave Benny a little plastic surgery :)

GG, on that ispot page, do you want to add yourself as an Actor under People, Places & Things? You could add Molly too.

Not offended in the least. The two-mascot thing was a little awkward, but I respect the Bulls for trying to keep a popular tradition (and long-time employee) while introducing a new one (not me--I wasn't the first Da Bull). As I mentioned in my earlier post, one issue was to differentiate between the two mascots. Benny had a giant, friendly, google-eyed head, pot belly, and enormous feet--honestly, he was perfectly designed for a cuddly mascot. So to contrast against Benny, Da Bull was fierce-looking and far more streamlined. The streamlining allowed him to be athletic (giant heads and feet are the antithesis of athletic mascot costumes), but his fierceness did scare some kids. I performed as both mascots, but mostly as Da Bull. Kids' reactions to Benny was unadulterated joy and open arms; their reactions to Da Bull was frequently cautious intrigue and sometimes complete terror.
Eventually the Bulls did do away with Da Bull and redesigned Benny as an athletic but still cute mascot. The guy who currently plays Benny is awesome. He's great at all the elements of mascotting: tumbling, dunking, dancing, and clowning.

Thanks Spiny! I have already tried to add myself. I got a confirmation email saying that they will review my submission, so hopefully they'll add it on soon. Hoping that Christopher Guest is a big football fan and is seeing the commercial...

Yeah the new one is pretty good. I had Bulls season tix from 1993 when the UC opened until I moved back to the Bay Area in 1998 (pre- and post-Da Bull). I got to see some pretty darn good basketball in those five years :D - and I will take the 1996-97 Bulls against any team in NBA history, regardless of what set of rules you want to apply from what era.
