Cost of drunken head coach? -
OutsiderFan - 08-25-2015
OK, after taking all this in, seeing the reporting, and reading the truly pathetic statements USC released on the drunk head coach at booster event topic, I'm convinced this is going to cost USC some games this year. The team just saw its head coach exhibit a violation of team conduct, and the only "discipline" that came of it was the AD saying he had a talk with him. So players who need to see everyone is accountable for their actions, see the leader of their team screw up with no consequences other than the AD saying he had a talk with him; no immediate suspension, no removal from team activity, etc. It's going to lead to a team with no discipline, IMO, and cost them games. I have my ideas how many, but wanted to see what the Cardboard cognoscenti think...

How can you know how many of the losses are due to poor performance and how much is due to "boorish behavior"? Is last year's win total the baseline?

No effect this year. When has USC ever had much team discipline? And when have any of Sark's teams been disciplined? Moreover, players already know that there's one set of rules for them and a different set of rules for the coach. I just don't see this affecting the team's play much at all. And if Sark does wind up being suspended, the likely replacement is as good or better a game-day coach as Sark is.
Whatever cost this has for USC will be longer-run, as offended boosters will be less generous, and some opposing coaches will use this incident as ammunition for negative recruiting.

Assuming Sark takes Haden's warnings to heart and keeps his nose clean for the rest of the year, I would agree on no effect for this season.
As far as recruiting is concerned, nothing much seems to bother U$C's ability to attract top talent. I would be surprised if this is an exception.

Of course you can't, so, short of U$C going undefeated, it will be impossible to know who is right in this poll.

Well the expectation for U$C is about 10-2 so anything under that will likely be blamed on this (unless there are major injury issues)

I do think that Sarkisian's behavior will effect the team, but I'm not sure how much will stem from this one incident. Doesn't it seem likely that the team already has an idea of what Sarkisian is like? Particularly if he was drinking in the locker room/coaches office after games? Coach gets on the team bus to leave from the visitor's stadium and he reeks of alcohol. I think these public meltdowns, if they are not a totally random event, come following a period where everyone around the person has already seen similar stuff. But a team mentality of protection would just lead people to not talk about it.
If that's true, I think Sarkisian's issues could already be effecting the squad. This latest incident just makes it all a public circus.

USC can be counted on to lose games it shouldn't, and to perform below its potential. UCLA shows signs of that, too.
I'd like to see Sark stay. I was delighted when USC signed him. I was certain they could not do worse than Kiffin, and was stunned they managed to stay so close. He's a child, but he was Haden's best option; it's not like E O represented a step up, either.
SC seems to like this model in a coach. McKay fits the mold, and Robinson came close, and Kiffin lapped the field for sheer dickishness. I think SC boosters want boorish coaches, and perhaps both LA teams now think they need boors like these guys to offset the Hollywood and thongs atmosphere around the two campuses. Chris Peterson, Mike Riley, David Shaw--they'd never get a whiff down there, I bet.

I voted no impact but want to do so with a caveat; for reasons unrelated if the Spoiled Children slip up to anyone early, like say the third game of the season, this will resurface and take on a whole new life.

What donors may have thought of Sarkisian's behavior might be different. Though, frankly, I doubt it. I'd guess the personal quality most U*S*C backers desire in a coach is winning football games, with everything else a distance second. And I don't think the Tro.jans are too unusual in that respect. I'd bet a lot of Stanford backers wouldn't have cared much if Harbaugh, following the Orange Bowl season, had done 25 shots of Jagermeister at a banquet and thrown up on John Hennessy's head.
Agree with Garvin here. I really think that the shock and outrage that many of the posters on this board seem to feel about Sark's behavior is not shared by many U$C players, fans, or donors. Perhaps it should be, but I doubt if it is.

Well, two of the three have reportedly been offered the S.-C. job, so they got some kind of whiff.

To piggyback on these two comments, I would imagine we are likely overreacting around here considering who the team in question is. If this happened at, say, Iowa State, we might view it differently.

A lot of the chatter has been about how this will affect recruits, more specifically parents of recruits. I find this a bit of a reach, but maybe others have a different opinion?

It didn't seem to hurt Coach Buttermaker's performance in the dugout.
But what else can you expect from a team named "the Be'ars"?

JPRI is correct. There is no way to know the impact or lack thereof unless Southern California goes undefeated.
I'm sure there is some shock and outrage in Troy, but if he wins a lot of games, it becomes a funny incident from which he learned. Unless he goes all Eustachy on them. (There are limits to tolerance even in LA.)
Don't forget. Stanford recently hired a football coach with a DUI conviction, so while our glass may be tempered........

To link this to the Civil War, and complaints about Grant's drinking to Lincoln, I bet if Sark wins, Haden will start sending cases of Fireball to his other coaches.

Harbaugh had had a DUI while at USD when we hired him.

Thanks.
By general reputation of personality I was going to guess Harbaugh or Wlat.
