Irwin? (and 8/22 open scrimmage discussion) - OutsiderFan - 08-22-2015

Drukarev story about the receivers mentions Cajuste and Rector, and a bit on IBS getting some playing time this year.Â Nothing about the other WRs.Â Has anyone heard any word on how Irwin is progressing? I've been assuming he would be getting on the field and making an impact as a True Frosh.Â

I read a comment that the other freshman wideout, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, has looked more impressive than Irwin so far. Don't know how much credence to give it.

The Stanford football program will host its annual Open House on Saturday, Aug. 22.

The days activities begin with an open practice at the Elliott Practice Fields from 10 a.m. until noon. Immediately following the practice, Head Coach DAVID SHAW will address fans. The event will continue until 1 p.m. on the Elliott Practice Fields with football drill stations, games and contests. Following those activities, the football team will be available for autographs on the concourse inside Maples Pavilion until 2 p.m.

Concessions will be open inside Maples during the autograph session, with limited offerings during the open practice portion. There will also be merchandise available for purchase.

Bryce Love is looking tough. Andy D. commented he has been excellent so far this fall and he just showed it with a 65 yard TD run.

I don't think it is to Hulk, who has him pegged as the second coming of Darrin Nelson.

I feel like Hulk had all of the skill players in this last class billed as the second coming (or better) of some phenomenal players. I hope so!

The only skill players I've been bullish on are Irwin--the best hs route runner I've ever seen--and Love, the fastest/quickest Stanford skill player I've ever seen.Â Both of their skills should translate well to college--a great route runner doesn't start running loopy routes against tougher competition; he runs tighter ones.

I'm not excited by Scarlett, in part because of the brother's injury history.Â And I don't think he can break open games, but I wouldn't rule out him becoming Gaffney in year three or four.

Arcega-Whiteside is intriguing, and it's hard to downplay the upside of a Parade first-team All American.Â He's got terrific length and a big catch radius.Â There's nothing I've seen or heard that says he couldn't be a very good three year starter.

It's a very good skill group.Â And again. Irwin and Love are freakish talents, by our standards at the very least.

By OUR STANDARDS.???Â What is that supposed to mean?Â Our standards have been pretty damn high the last few years.

I think Hulk means that we rarely get Gene Washington, James Lofton or Ken Margerum level talent.Â Great when we get it, no question, but we don't often get it.Â We more often get very productive talents like Troy Walters, Greg Camarillo, the Whalens, DeRonnie Pitts, Vataha.Â

It's still an unreasonable statement IMHO.NOBODY gets Washington, Lofton, or Margerum talent on a regular basis because they don't come along regularly.Â There's a reason we don't regularly get Lucks, Gerhardts, Washingtons, Loftons or Margerums regularly.Â They rarely exist.Â And I think you do Troy Walters and, maybe, Vataha, a disservice.

The general point is true: A talent like Andrew Luck doesn't come along every year, so rarely does anyone get that kind of talent. But I think it's a bit too simplistic. I'm very happy with how our recruiting has been going in recent years, but in terms of true premium athletes the football factories (VSC, Ohio State, Alabama, etc), where academics are either an afterthought or a nuisance, have a wider range of talent to draw from and, yes, have in the past put on the field generally more athletic teams. (We've done better with OL for sure) That gap seems to be narrowing lately, with Stanford's football reputation improving (which may be why more premium athletes last year and in this year's cycle, so far, are strongly considering us). If we were truly drawing this same calibre of athlete, why would there be so much pleasant surprise on this very board at the serious interest being shown by Demetris Robertson?

Our success in the recent past, especially in the Kevin Hogan era when we could not rely on the otherworldly ability of Andrew Luck, has been based on a disciplined as hell defense with good athleticism, and a grind-it-out offense that by its nature minimizes the athletic gap by grinding the opposing defense into dust and keeping the opposing offense off the field.
