Soooooo...mere method acting, designed to light a fire under Rosen (or entertain the local media) as the LAT article implies? Or a real possibility that Rosen will not be the starter because he's not performing as well as he needs to in practice?

The quotes suggest Mora's almost as annoyed at the media (and the fans they report for, who are surely the first passengers on the bandwagon) as he is with Rosen.

I have a slightly different read.  I don't think it's just an unhappy coach trying to motivate an arrogant kid.  My guess is that it wasn't their first exchange.  I'm guessing this has happened before, in ways big and small, on the field, in the locker room, in the video room, in the meeting room, on the training table.  If he's truly uncoachable, that's the sound of a more-frustrated-than-ticked-off coach.  My guess is he thought he could work his magic against all that arrogance.  Guess not.

I've never heard of a QB getting moved to second-string because he couldn't throw the Hail Mary.

Well, these things don't exist in a vacuum.  It would appear as though Mora has more beefs than just his inability to hit a hail mary on Wednesday, August 19th, 2015.

It is perhaps a bit early to conclude that Rosen's alleged arrogant, know-it-all attitude will hamper his college career.

I know we would all like it to because:
1. We didn't offer him because of it, and it would validate our decision.
2. He plays for a Pac-12 rival.
3.We all love schadenfreude.

So we'll see what happens. Time will tell. Reportedly, he has not looked as impressive in fall drills as he did during the spring.

Putting aside the attitude issues that are no longer a secret with Rosen...

The UCLA QB situation is a little like what Oregon faces with Adams. If the "anointed one" starts out of the gate and fails, the head coach is boned. You don't play the #2 option after the longer term answer fails. You play the less upside guy you hope can buy you some time, as the more talented higher potential player gets acclimated to practices during game weeks, and has some in-game reps off the bench.  This way if #2 is good, you don't have to play the guy who may not be ready.  If #2 fails, then you know your best option is to play the one with more upside. If you start the most talented, but least game-ready guy, and he fails because he couldn't handle everything out of the gate, then you've screwed your season.

Shaw did it correctly.  He played Nunes, knowing he was more immediately ready, then as he sputtered, he got Hogan more reps until Hogan took over.  Shaw had to know all along that Hogan was the higher upside guy, but what would have happened if he forced Hogan to start over Nunes when he wasn't ready?  Hogan would have failed and then he would have been left with a Nunes who was no better and wasn't going to get any better.  No way Stanford goes to the Rose Bowl that year if Hogan started the season when not ready.

Without hearing the exchange, it's hard to know how much venom was coursing through Mora.  But the evidence that Rosen is the second coming of Ryan Leaf, or a much worse version of Jay Cutler, seems strong. 

I can't recall a recruit in the last 15 years about whom so many people have spoken of so poorly.

The Mora-Rosen exchange sounds like a whole lot of nothing to me. The coach is trying to motivate a player. No big deal. In fact, I'm guessing the coach probably has made up his mind to go with Rosen, or he wouldn't have done this.

If you take it as a standalone incident I would agree with you.  But I give Mora the benefit of the doubt that this was one of many times Rosen has demonstrated a less than 100% effort and this was the culmination/last straw.
