Can anyone shed light on this?

Michael Rector - Leftcoast - 08-15-2015

Michael Rector has been suspended indefinitely for undisclosed reasons per David Shaw.  Ouch.

There's very little in the Mercury article to gauge the seriousness of the offense or the length of the suspension.  I was expecting good things from the Hogan/Rector tandem this year.

At least for the near term our experienced receiving corp was just cut in half.  Any guesses on who is the next man up to fill the important "speed receiver" slot alongside Cajuste?

Hopefully the situation is resolved soon.  But if not, maybe by mid-season, the answer is Irwin.

Irwin may be the answer. However, he is not really a speed receiver.

Brandt-Sims definitely has the speed.  What about Owusu?  Isnʻt he the next guy on the depth chart?

Itʻs a bummer about Rector.  He is such an exciting player to watch.  Hopefully itʻs not that serious and that he will be back on the team sooner than later.

If James Winston did all the crap he did and missed a grand total of one game, hard to imagine Rector's suspension will be more than a game.  The real issue is whether he is allowed to practice.  Has that been addressed?

This is sort of surprising given I saw a post-practice interview with Rector earlier in the week and I distinctly remember thinking, "wow, this guy sure comes off well and seems to be really mature for his age."

For all we know, the suspension might only last a week....at least that is my hope. Owusu seems like the most likely replacement given his speed.

Suspension may only last through part of or all of camp.  Still 3 weeks left before NU, and TBH if it lasts into the season I wouldn't worry too much about the first two games other than him & Hogan getting reps together in game situations before they go conquer Troy.

Yeah, I like to think Shaw would have mentioned if it was going to include games (or one of the media would have asked to clarify that).  I'm guessing it's for all or part of camp.

Also some Owusu will get most of the first team reps without Rector.

How Florida State disciplined Winston is irrelevant to how Stanford disciplines Rector.

Power 5 conference football coaches certainly talk to one another and share best practices about team discipline.  No, how Florida State treated Winston may not determine how Stanford deals with a player who runs afoul of its rules, but we can use it as a guide for how Shaw might discipline a player. 

Of course, until we know what Rector did (or didn't do), it's tough to speculate on how long he might be out.

I would be very surprised if Shaw were to use Florida State's example as a model for appropriate player discipline.

If Stanford were just another Power 5 conference school, then you might well be correct.  It's not.  Expectations for football players' off-field conduct are rather different at Stanford than they are at Florida State, and thus discipline probably is, too.
