B Scarlett watch - OutsiderFan - 03-06-2015

Just read on Ca.l Rivals board that Brennan Scarlett was accepted to the grad program to which he was applying and is in fact transferring to Stanford.

He's listed at 6-4 265 on the Ca.l roster, so can probably provide help on the DL and maybe even play a little OLB in certain situations.

Apparently not participating in spring practice:

The transfer is why he isn't.

A follow-up tweet says Scarlett is not participating due to his injury. Click on the Retweet link to see the follow-up.

Re: Has anyone posted this yet? - winflop - 03-06-2015

Well this would be a serious stick in the eye of Low APR U if he played significantly better this fall.  I wonder to what extent Turley can start working with him given his injury?

Question though - at 6'4" & 265 he sounds like another DE.  Granted, it gives Stanford more depth where they are ridiculously thin, but still doesn't appear to solve the NT problem.

Re: Has anyone posted this yet? - FarmBoy - 03-06-2015

How much of an impact could this guy have? I didn't see a lot of C'al fans bemoaning the loss when the rumor first sprung up.

I don't see any real confirmation of this yet, anyway.

Re: Has anyone posted this yet? - Hulk01 - 03-06-2015

I think the NCAA prohibits graduate transfers from practicing before fall practice of their first graduate year.

Fortunately, the rule also applies to Oregon's new QB.

If he can merely stay healthy and serve as solid rotation DL, Scarlett will help a lot.  Shittu, Phillips, Scarlett and Thomas give us four decent bodies.  But as our only guy with a true NT frame. Wesley Annan looks like a must-play guy.  But my bet is that he's at least 18 months away.  He doesn't appear to have the strength to cope with even a half-assed double team.

And if Scarlett can play like did two seasons ago. . .damn.

Re: Has anyone posted this yet? - BobK - 03-06-2015

Stanford didn't play FB during WW2 cal did.  Post war a number of cal players transferred to Stanford

A friend tells me about a MVB player who couldn't play at Cal as they didn't have a team but when to a Stanford grad school and played on a Stanford championship team

Dale Rubin a FB and track star played at Cal then Stanford and a member of our world record 4x 110 relay team.

Not quite what you're asking, garvin, but C.al's defensive coordinator in the early 1960s was hired by Stanford in 1963. His name was Bill Walsh.

Have a link, or is it behind a paywall?  I'm not seeing any mention of it elsewhere (including the Stanford rivals board).

I assume that doesn't apply to strength & conditioning though, right?  4-5 months with Turley could do wonders...

It was part of a post on the premium board from someone who follows the program close enough to have just had his fifth face-to-face conversation with Sonny Dykes.  The Scarlett news was part of the run-down on things heading into Spring practice.

Re: Has anyone posted this yet? - FarmBoy - 03-06-2015

Well, until the folks at BI start howling/dismissing the rumor, I won't hold my breath. Hopefully if it happens, he's able to contribute right away.

Not getting amped up about Scarlett - Redrum - 03-06-2015

Recovering from what seems his umpteenth injury of a four year career.  IF he can and does suit up AND stay healthy,  then I'll get a little more excited.  Don't give a flip about it being a poke in the eye for Kal.  All that matters is if he can contribute.  My guess is at best he'll be a quality sub who sees lots of playing time.  But I'll wait until I see him in a red and white uniform actually playing defense before I get too worked up.

Re: Has anyone posted this yet? - OutsiderFan - 03-06-2015

What were the odds Stanford would have brothers coming into the program both rehabbing from ACL tears at the same time?

I don't quite remember the details, but my memory is that the NCAA doesn't allow graduate transfers to practice with their new teams until they enroll at the new school.

I know absolutely nothing about the rules - but that certainly makes sense that the transfer would have to be actually enrolled.

Low APR U actually has a very strong men's club team.  Two club teams, in fact.  Gold and Blue if memory serves.  They have a good coach and as you might imagine in this state, a lot of students who played high school level ball at a very high level and still wanted to play, but didn't want to invest 35 hours a week in a sport.  My older son practiced with them once.  They had a setter who'd been recruited by 1/2 dozen schools and wanted to play but didn't want to be second string at UCSB.

Re: Has anyone posted this yet? - stanfan - 03-08-2015

I believe Scarlett had ACL surgery in Nov.  Wouldn't  expect to see him until fall camp.  Has had a # of injury issues.  Hope he can stay healthy and contribute.  We obviously need all the DL help we can get.

Re: Has anyone posted this yet? - yvonne - 03-08-2015

The reporter who tweeted that he was not going to be in spring practice later tweeted that it was due to his injury.
