The depressing state of Stanford basketball - Cardinal96 - 03-04-2015

Once in the last six years, we have made the NCAA tournament.  As things stand, we look to be heading for one NCAA berth in the last seven years.  Until we have a coaching change, I don't see me or my buddies getting excited about Stanford basketball again.  You see this in the energy of this board.  In football season, people are following developments closely and debating all sorts of topics surrounding our team.  Come basketball season, apathy sets in while people basically wait around and ask "Is football here yet?".

One of my issues with the team is that they are horribly boring to watch. I'm ok with them losing, if it's exciting. It's not. The team has no rhythm, play calling is awful and besides 1-2 players over the past 5 years, nobody seems to be improving. It's awful. Attendance is back to 80's levels and Bernard has got to realize that the fan base is gone. I don't expect Dawkins to get fired, but it sure would be nice.

Well, women's basketball is not quite as bad, but it has certainly been a depressing year, comparatively.

A bad year for Tara is light years ahead of any year under Dawkins

I agree. I'm very disappointed in the way the women's basketball season has turned out this year, but I'm confident that it's a one or two year downturn, and not a longterm pattern. The fify was to point out that sports are not played by men only.

Have you seen Tara's team this year?  With the exception of literally one game, it's been pretty painful to watch...at least as painful as the men.  I believe we had 3 [maybe 4] shot clock violations in one HALF earlier this season.  And, since one Dawkins' team made it to the Sweet Sixteen and another won an NIT title, Tara's team will have to make the National Championship game this year to be considered "light years ahead" of EITHER of those teams.  I hope it happens, but I'm not betting any large amount on it...

Has the game passed her by?  Is recruiting not there?  Curious.

Princeton's #13 ranked team is 27-0.  My son saw them practice last year, said they were the best-coached team he'd ever seen, bar none.  Amazing, crisp practices, no time wasted, discipline kept to a minimum, upbeat players, etc.

Re: The depressing state of Stanford basketball - Leftcoast - 03-05-2015

I had this discussion with a fellow Stanford grad over lunch today.

In our opinion the issues Tara's team faced in Pac 12 play have been due to the lack of a dominant front court player, the associated change in offense (no more triangle) and the increased reliance on younger players and jump shots.  How long has it been since a Stanford team didn't have a dominant front court player?  Over the last 9 years we've had Jayne Appel, Chiney and Nneka Ogwumike although before Jayne there were some lighter years.  Jayne's freshman year was 2006/2007, correct?

The current hole at center will be filled.  In Tara we trust.

Re: The depressing state of Stanford basketball - CompSci87 - 03-05-2015

Even just before Jayne there were Brooke Smith and Kristen Newlin... Before that I didn't follow the team enough to remember.

Re: The depressing state of Stanford basketball - Leftcoast - 03-05-2015

Good call on Brooke and Kristen.  I didn't mention them because I'm remembering a two year gap between that team and Jayne's first year but I could be wrong.

If you REALLY take a trip in the "Way, Way Back machine" you find Olympia Scott and Val Whiting in Stanford uniforms as well as the elsewhere mentioned Kristin Folkl and Vanessa Nygaard.  There's plenty of others - the Vanderveer Center tree is large and has many branches.

In other news, MBB down by 14 at halftime to ASU. Another Dawkins swoon.

Re: The depressing state of Stanford basketball - CompSci87 - 03-05-2015

No gap. They were seniors Jayne's freshman year. At times Brooke was playing the 4 with Jayne at the 5. Brooke didn't look too comfortable there, or so my impression was.

I gave up when they got down 12 while looking completely overmatched.

Re: The depressing state of Stanford basketball - BobK - 03-05-2015

Actually we are down 3

Re: The depressing state of Stanford basketball - BobK - 03-05-2015

And as we all knew , lose at the end.  >:(

Re: The depressing state of Stanford basketball - Farm93 - 03-06-2015

Every season seems to fizzle out.  I would think a "good" coach would run through the Pac-12 the first time and then improve the second time through the conference.  I realize the schedule is not balanced like it used to be, but Dawkins has consistently demonstrated that his teams lose ground as the season progresses.  Very frustrating.

I am sure Dawkins is a great guy.  I am sure he can be a winner at some schools.  Yet, seems like after 7 years the sample size is large enough to know that Dawkins style doesn't sell tickets at Stanford, doesn't create excitement on campus, and doesn't produce strong March/April basketball, at least at Stanford.

Sadly I believe Muir will insist on keeping Dawkins.  Perhaps it will be easier to replace Muir first.

Tournament results are not everything, and winning the Not Important Tournament is -- NOT IMPORTANT.

Last year Tara did NOT make the Sweet 16?  2006-2007.  And that team came into the tournament having won 28 of it's last 29 games and having a top seed, not losing 3 of its last four and squeaking in as a #10 seed.

I think Dawkins style of play would sell plenty of tickets if it were more consistently executed.  Maybe it can't, but since he's essentially running the Duke system I'd find that argument hard to make.

I got the sense last night that the team had quit in the first half, the seniors had a LOT to say at halftime, they came out and played tough and hard for about 15 minutes of the second half, and in typical Dawkins fashion they collapsed in the final five minutes and lost another close game.  Dawkins is 2-6 in close games this year, and under 40% for his Stanford career.  That sucks.

Re: The depressing state of Stanford basketball - FarmBoy - 03-06-2015

Do you remember that long thread we had arguing whether this was a "tournament team"? Ah, I long for the days when it was even debatable.

Until Dawkins is gone, Stanford men's basketball will be a mediocre program that will occasionally rise to the challenge through the greatness of 1-2 players and despite the coach. Too many years have been wasted on his leadership already, but I suspect we'll get 1-2 more before he's gone.
