QB Situation for Next Year -
MustardtheBallCarrier - 10-22-2014
For those closer to the program and more knowledgable, what does next season look like at QB? Will anyone have a real shot to unseat Hogan? Is Burns not progressing? Would Shaw give Keller a chance?
Fun Fact - A little part of me dies every time I see Hogan throw a pass.

As a fellow Californian, I've been called a lot of things, but "Yankee" has never been one of them.

Feel free to speculate. I won't write it down in permanent marker yet.

Based on no more information than anyone else has, my guess is that Hogan probably keeps the job next year. Burns looked bad in the Spring game and came from a single-wing offense in high school, so he has a long way to go to catch up. Chryst is highly touted, passed a lot in high school, and looked good doing it, so there's a chance he'll be ready to compete for the job and maybe even win it.

I had the same question. He has a year of eligibility left, but as far as I know will graduate this year. Does he even come back?

He'll be here, Garvin. What would he have to do elsewhere next year? Shaw's stuck on him, and rather than keeping the free ride and an outside chance of getting on an NFL roster in 2016, why spend $75K/year getting an MBA at SBS or even Wharton? Even in the unlikely event that Shaw sees the light and Chryst beats him out for snaps, it's probably not a bad life being a 5th year coulda been at Stanford.

Has anyone heard anything about Chryst from practice observations? I haven't seen or heard anyone say anything along the lines of "Chryst is really impressing in practices" or "Chryst looks like he has the most upside potential of any of the QBs." Weren't these kinds of things said about Luck during his redshirt year?Â

I always expect kids to stay because I did. It's hard to leave Stanford. Instinctively, i recognized the wisdom of something Meryl Streep said years later.
"I loved college and always figured life would be like college," she told an interviewer. "But life isn't like college. Life is like high school."

I too, think that Hogan will stay. To take Hulk's point one step further, perhaps he likes college a bit too much.
That being said, I hope that Tavita is working extremely hard with Chryst and the other back-ups. This needs to be a battle for the starting spot, IF that door is not opened in the next 2-3 games. Should we fall off in the OSU game, where we left off with ASU and see poor execution and inaccurate throwing, then I will hope to see us try a series or two with someone else taking snaps. The team needs a leader on O.Â
One last point, with what I have seen of Hogan's development, some of this clearly falls on Tavita.  Can we please have at least ONE pump fake followed by a throw to a secondary receiver?!Â

I haven't heard anything. I still find it weird how people are just
sure one of the other QBs will emerge, because it sure happened back when they were calling for Nottingham and Burns and Lloyd and Crower! Playing QB at the college level is
hard and not a lot of people can do it well, even with great HS tape, and Hogan has already shown that he can do it better than most.

I also find it weird but I've come to expect it. Expectations are basically all people use to judge; at the moment Chryst has not disappointed anyone's expectations and are therefore awesome. This also explains the persistent misconception that Hogan was somehow at his best in 2012.

I believe he was offensive scout player of the week in early October. Other than that don't expect to hear anything until after the season ends. Assuming the team makes a bowl game we should hear more during bowl week practice.

Garvin, not only is a Pac-12 championship not mathematically precluded, I believe that we still control our own destiny. Only Oregon is ahead of us in the Pac-12 North standings, so if we beat them in our head-to-head matchup (and don't have any more boneheaded losses), we will be in the Pac-12 championship game. So, if we run the table, we will be Pac-12 champs. That being said, we would need dramatic improvement in order to run the table. I'm hoping we do, but not holding my breath. Three out of the five games are against ranked teams. Three of five are on the road. We may only be favored against OSU, and maybe Cal.

Question for WIM and comment for Garvin -
Treebound - 10-23-2014
I think I saw a comment in another thread, but statistically, when was Hogan at his best? Yes, it's somewhat subjective, but the QBR rating of last week and the year is not stellar. The reality is that we are now passing more than in the past, which means there is more pressure on our QB to make completions.  I'm guessing you would say his peak was 2013?
Garvin, you don't have to go back that far (Stenstrom and Palumbus) as I'm sure you are well aware. Many were calling for Hogan or "the Sheriff" to get some snaps versus Nunes when he started to fall off.  I was one of them and I'm glad that choice was made by the staff.  Do I think Shaw has the best data to make this decision? Yes. Do I think he can sometimes be stubborn to a fault with play calling and personnel and place kickers? Yes.   Am I glad he's our coach? Absolutely!

By mid October 2012, after we had seen Hogan run his miniature "package" a few times, quite a few people called for him or at least expected to see a lot more of him. There was some surprise when we learned he could throw the ball as well as run, though. He developed a broader skill set over the first few weeks he played.

The difference between then and now, though, was that the pro-Hogan movement started after people has seen at least a little bit of what he could do in a game. The pro Chryst contingent has no data from a college game to stoke their optimism.
Re: QB Situation for Next Year - ChicagoCard - 10-24-2014
I remember Shaw talking him up in August that year saying basically that he was pushing the other guys (Nunes and Nottingham) but not there yet.
Re: QB Situation for Next Year -
81alum - 10-24-2014
That's right. And the pro-Nottingham buzz was based on a few plays when Nottingham came into blowouts behind Luck the year before. He threw 8 passes and had a QB rating of 186--higher than Luck!Â
What is the moral of the story? Whether it is watching 8 passes in no-pressure situations, or relying on old high school tapes, we fans have far less information on which we can form an opinion about a young quarterback than the coaching staff has. We may have certain advantages over the coaching staff--we have no vested interests in protecting ourselves from criticism about earlier decisions, we have no personal relationships with the players, we have no friendships with assistant coaches--all of which make it a lot easier for us to criticize and perhaps even be more objective at times.Â
However, the one thing we do not have is information--without which we really have no rational basis for saying much of anything about our young quarterback alternates. But being rational is not what makes us into fan--atics!Â
We do have quite a bit of information about Crower. Enough for me to be very curious about how he would do in a game. I thought he looked good in the Spring game. I would love to hear Shaw privately explain why Crower doesn't get time--he must have...information that we lack.
