Enough of last weeks game! On to next Saturday's game!
What will the final look like?

Was nervous before last week's game, not as much for this one. Stanford wins by 17. Some but not all kinks worked out.

i think the margin is in the 9-14 pt range. hopefully we'll see our OL back to better form and our defensive play-calling less vanilla. it could have been the play-calling and both offensive/defensive coordinators wanting to save the good stuff for later...it could have been that!

OK, simply because predicting the unpredictable is fun:Â
When we are on defense: Our secondary won't be able to improve that much in one week, so pass-happy Duke will still be able to exploit our secondary and rack up some passing yards. On the other hand, with the return of Skov and the absorption of the lesson of last week, our defensive front seven will play better and apply more pressure. This will make the Duke attack a little more erratic and lower their third down conversion rate. So Duke will connect on a couple of big bombs, but will also suffer a oouple of bad sacks. Duke should be able to exceed SJSU's score of 17: I'd say they score 24.
When we are on offense: Our blocking will somewhat improve and Duke has shown itself to be vulnerable to the run. Our backs should have a better day than last week and this improved ground game will help our third down conversion rate. However, sooner or later one of our inexperienced players is going to commit a turnover or two--we were lucky not to lose the Nunes fumble nor suffer an interception last week. While the turnovers and slow groundgame may hold the score down some, the Duke defense is weak and we should still do better than against SJSU. I'd say we wind up with 31 points with at least one or two touchdowns coming off of long runs.Â
Stanford +7.
Re: Predict the Duke margin - Cardinal96 - 09-03-2012
Stanford 31
Duke 28
I think we will eke out a sqeaker for the second weak in a row. I see their pass offense dicing through our secondary and them putting up some points. I think our running game and conservative passing game will also be able to put up some points. I think our defense will stiffen up late in the game and pull out a victory for us.Â
I wish I could forecast a blowout but I don't think we will have many of those this season.

For a while there I was the only 20+ voter. I know there is plenty to fret about but there's a lot of young talent. I suspect SJSU is going to turn out to be a top-30 to top-40 team this year (by the way their 3 toughest oppenents after week 1 are SDSU, BYU and Louisiana Tech).
As someone who always likes to see the Pac-12 do well against the Big-10, was disappointed to see that Oregon St's game against Nicholl's St was postponed. Certainly not what you want out of your opener and Oregon St under Riley are notorious slow starters. Doesn't bode well for them in hosting Wisconsin next week (Wisconsin who had a fairly close one against a non-BCS opponent, certainly inferior to SJSU).

My guess would be we get somewhere in the thirties, Duke gets somewhere in the twenties.
Stanford 34, Duke 24 sounds about right.
I will say that if we can't put up some serious points against the Dookie defense that we all should plan on spending the U$C weekend cleaning out our sock drawers.

Considering giving a -1 for this comment, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt that you're jesting. Not showing up on game day would be bad for the team and program and would reinforce the image of Stanford fans as fairweather followers. This will be a widely watched game and we need more Cardinal and WHite and less Cardinal and Gold in the stands. My biggest fear for that game is that the stadium is going to be 50/50, or worse, split between Stanford a fans of Troy.
It's before school starts, so our student participating will be down, but hopefully the football bug is caught on enough that students will show up early just to got to this game. Seriously, the University should open up housing early for students going to the game. We play SC twice on campus during a 4 year degree span, and it's one of the top sporting events to attend, IMO, so not going is a big lost opportunity for fans to become lifelong Cardinal supporters.
Additionally, how many of the season tix were purchased this year by SC fans who just wanted to guarantee a seat for this game? For a team with a big fan base with NC aspirations, $300-$400 is not much for a weekender road trip, especially if it is going to avenge a 4 of the last 5 losing streak.

Farm Boy: A lot of people on this board would love to show up on game day -- any game day -- if we lived in the area. Alas, many of us don't and I suspect JPRI meant avoiding the agony of watching a U$C massacre on TV.

Geez, thanks.
Of course I didn't mean it literally. I just meant that not being able to score much on the Dookies wouldn't give anyone a warm fuzzy feeling about our chances of pulling an upset against our friends from down south.
P.S. Actually I was at the game two years ago. But, no, Garvin is right, I'm not going to make it this time.

JPRI - I didn't intend to question your personal fanhood. I figured your comment was in jest, but my concern about fan support and how the performance against SJSU/Duke will affect it remains. If we scrape by Duke, or god forbid lose, I can quickly see the gains made over the last 4 years evaporate pretty quickly. Heck, I heard stories of Stanford fans selling their tix on Stub Hub for the Oregon game last year because the money was too good to pass up. Do you think Stanford fans were the ones driving up the price on Stub Hub? There were a lot of seats in my section that typically showed up in Cardinal that were clad in Green and Yellow. It's embarrassing on TV when the noise level on Stanford third downs is louder than on the opponents', in Stanford Stadium... And it kills recruiting. I remember Vaughters commenting on it during his official at the Arizona game on 2010. The stands were half empty at kick off and the UofA fans were louder than Stanford fans during the first quarter (after which the tailgaters deigned with worth their time to enter and cheer, I guess.)
I don't see a viable path to really expanding fan interest beyond Stanford alums and affiliates in the Bay Area. Maybe better marketing can get it done, but if having a top-10 team two years in a row, three Voldemort trophy runners-up playing on the field for three consecutive years, and big wins against U.SC, Oregon, ND, VTech, etc. can't get it done, I don't know what would. The fact is the Bay Area has too many outside interests and Stanford isn't seen as a school that you can "adopt" for rooting interest. I also think the multi-cultural mix has shifted away from Football viewership on the Peninsula. But I'm more than happy to be proved wrong.

For those wondering, Skov will start alongside Vaughters. It will be interesting if Lancaster steps in for Vaughters late in the game again.
Re: Predict the Duke margin -

Having Skov will let the def. coordinator dial up some pass rushing plays with greater chances of success. We need Skov to knock off the rust before U$C.

If Vaughters really has as much upside as everyone says he has, you've got to keep him in the starting lineup, working alongside Skov who should be able to teach him some things about playing MLB at this level. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see the MLBs develop into a rotation where Skov/Vaughters come out every couple of drives and are replaced by Tarpley/Lancaster. It seems to me that having tandems who work together well, communicte well, etc., has some real advantages, and we know Tarpley/Lancaster did very well last year.Â
I'm really looking forward to this game since it will give us a very strong indication of whether last week was just a first-game blip, or something to be greatly concerned about.

Shaw, in his press conference earlier this week, said as much. Lancaster played well in the 4th quarter last week and he will play earlier this week against Duke.

At the SJSU game it seemed to me that the student section looked pretty full. I wondered about that, but perhaps they were mostly graduate students, who do constitute almost half of the student body and who tend to be around year round.Â
Overall, there were 40,577 at the game with stadium capacity being 50k. I would guess that Duke might be less, given that they will bring a lot fewer fans than SJSU. Even if the Spoiled Children bring as many fans as SJSU and also buy and fill all the empty seats, then the ratio would be at worst ~ 35k Stanford to 15k Spoiled Children.

I chose a margin of over 20, largely because I believe that Duke will struggle with the late starting time.

OK, so who are the people who picked 20+?
There are seven, and I am not one of them.

would be neat if the system could show who predicted what on these polls (ideally, allowing voters to opt-out of identifying themselves too)
