You just knew the mob would reach palace gates eventually - Redrum - 01-17-2012
The scapegoat de jour is....Kal's Chancellor Birgeneau who outrageously suggests it is for the Athletic Dept. to figure out. The "it" to figure out is how to pay more for assistants' salaries. The funny part is how outraged everyone is that the real evil is the possibility it might require a balanced self-supporting budget with the athletic dept. paying its way. The really good one was the guy who called out the Chancellor for stupidly not recognizing what a great ROI would come from running (one more/another) deficit.

The logic was always flawed. The powers at the UC really seemed to support the idea that the TV deal could balance the AD budget. (More revenue, same costs, problem solved) As if no other program in the conference would plow that incremental money into athletics forcing the b.e.a.rs to increase spending to just preserve their current position in the conference.
The TV deal at best creates more revenue, more costs, stronger conference, same UC budget problems.
The UC AD is probably close to needing $10 million a year to cover operational shortfalls and another 7 or 8 figure annually to cover the now underfunded AD infrastructure projects. Given the massive cuts throughout the State budget it is unacceptable for the UC AD to feel some level of entitlement.

That's funny. Tosh tried to let Mr. Paid Too Much down with one of those I love this place lines. Mr. Paid Too Much wasted time and tried to match the UW terms. Of course, staying once you've declared you will go is always really dangerous. Besides, it is highly likely that Mr. Paid Too Much will be fired soon anyway, so it is a far better career move to leave that staff while the going is good.
At least now Mr. Paid Too Much has a set of ready excuses should the team finish in the 5-7 to 7-5 range.

Would a coach like Lupoi work at a place like Stanford? Just wondering about what makes him tick.
