Let's play a random comparison game: - washingtonismoney - 01-09-2012

Not random at all of course, but here are two Stanford freshmen linebacker seasons, as judged statistically*:

Player A: 62 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 PBU
Player B: 57 tackles, 4 TFL, 1.5 Sacks, 1 INT, 4 PBU, 2 Fumbles Forced

Player A= Shayne Skov
Player B= A.J. Tarpley

*(There are all sorts of caveats to this comparison, of course. Skov was a true freshman; Tarpley's had a year in the program. Skov's defensive coordinator was Ron Lynn in a 4-3; Tarpley's was Derek Mason in a 3-4. Tarpley's supporting cast in 2011 was better than Skov's in 2009. Still, I think it's an interesting comparison--I wouldn't have guessed that Tarpley's production was comparable to Skov's.)

Spare me. To compare the two on any basis is a joke.

*shrug*.

Skov was better than Tarpley. I'm not disputing that. That's why I was so surprised. Tarpley's just an interesting player in that he makes a lot of plays without necessarily having an obvious angle--e.g. Skov's athleticism and intensity.

I really started liking Tarpley in the Duke game.  He isn't as flashy as Skov, and probably not quite as fast, but he is a damn good football player, and certainly good enough for a championship team.  Stanford is Top 5 in the country in rush defense and Tarpley is a big reason why.  And he's only going to get better.

I am also a brobdingnagian fan of Tarpley's instincts and think he's a very good athlete. He has problems shedding blocks sometimes, but he can finish the play when he's in position to do so.
