Changes to the Transfer Portal Window - Maple Leaf - 09-05-2025

From the Athletic:

The Division I Football Oversight Committee voted to approve a move to a single transfer portal window, beginning Jan. 2 and lasting 10 days. The move still must be approved by the NCAA’s administrative committee, and a vote is expected before Oct. 1. But what does this mean for player movement?

The spring transfer portal window, which lasted 10 days in April, will be eliminated.
The winter transfer portal window will move out of December, after most bowl games are complete, and will be sliced in half (it was 20 days in 2024).
Graduate transfers, who last year were able to enter the portal on Oct. 1 and were eligible to enter all the way through the end of the spring window, will also be restricted to the 10-day January window.
There will still be an immediate 30-day window to enter the portal for players at schools that make a coaching change.

well it's about time.
this transfer portal business is out of control.

RE: Changes to the Transfer Portal Window - Hurlburt88 - 09-05-2025

Overall feels like the right things to do.  For us, I presume it could put more pressure on our grad school admissions to be even more coordinated with recruiting for grad transfers.

RE: Changes to the Transfer Portal Window - KartyFan - 09-05-2025

This seems directionally good for us? Aligns the only transfer window with admissions season and makes it easier for Stanford Athletics and Admissions to iron out a process if it is usually confined to the same short time period.

RE: Changes to the Transfer Portal Window - fullmetal - 09-06-2025

It's a good step.  The root cause is still the vastly perverse financial incentive that players find themselves considering in the context of collegiate sports.  Money can ruin a lot of things if wielded so.

IMO, they need to either limit the number of times a player can transfer to 1 or make them sit out a season when they transfer.

I think you should be able to transfer once and play immediately, for any subsequent transfers players should sit out season

Good compromise.

With Stanford having an interim head coach for just this season then Andrew Luck may/will get a look at what players are looking to transfer as soon as the season is over or shortly there after.

How would any of you like being Andrew Luck over the next 3 to 6 months with the following on your plate:

RE: Changes to the Transfer Portal Window - fullmetal - 09-09-2025

A lot of that comes down to fundraising for NIL $$ and fundraising for head coach/staff salaries.  I would guess Andrew is not directly involved in the coaching search, and I assume a "nationwide search" is already being unofficially performed through personal channels.  We need a good staff.

While I have met Andrew, admire his remarkable talent, and respect his values and priorities, I do not think that his QB greatness is sufficient to ensure that he knows how to spot top-notch coaching talent. Have we seen any positive impact of Reich yet on this team? I don't mean obvious things, like having vs. not having a coach and total wins, but more subtle things like an improved O, better QB preparedness, better game planning, better play calling, etc. If there have been such improvements, I haven't seen them yet.

Agreed, if he's not who is?  The football coach works for him!!!

If not Luck who else would be leading the search?  The Interim AD?

RE: Changes to the Transfer Portal Window - BobK - 09-09-2025

Didn’t the new AD start yesterday?  He leave already?

It's Luck's choice to make. Hope he ditches the committee other than maybe his dad and a handful of confidants.

Will be interesting.

Did anyone else see the Gameday piece on him last Saturday?  He admitted his resume was thin.  Levin gave him the keys, so he gets to drive.

He’s still listed in the Stanford Athletics directory, so he didn’t have a peak at the offices and run after the first day.
