Quote:It didn't take long for No. 3 Stanford to tally its first national champions of the 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, as Caroline Bricker, Aurora Roghair, Lillie Nordmann, and Kayla Wilson put on a dominant display to claim the 800 freestyle relay title on Wednesday evening.
So, what are our chances of ending the UVA dynasty?

I think that Stanford could have threatened Virginia this year if 2023 NCAA champ Claire Curzan had stayed. Alas, she is swimming for Virginia now.

Quote:No. 3 Stanford added another national title on day two of the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, as Torri Huske topped a loaded 200 IM field to give the Cardinal its first individual winner of the weekend.
After day two, Stanford sits second in the team standings with 178 points, 47 points behind leader Virginia.

Go Card! Huske leadoff on the 200 free relay was 20.92, her first sub-21 and fifth fastest all time.
And yes, was Curzan a 1-and-done at LSJU, sort of like Betts in W BB? Mismatches with the coaches? Oh what could have been, for both teams.

Stanford 2nd at NCAAs after massively outperforming expectations. Tremendous performance by the Card! And many of Stanford's current stars -- other than Torri Huske -- were not as highly recruited as the top swimmers on other teams. I'm thinking of Lucy Bell (200 BR winner), Caroline Bricker (400 IM winner), and Aurora Roghair (runner up in 1650 and 500). Big props to the team.
1. Virginia 544 2. Stanford 417
3. Texas 394 4. Indiana 312
5. Tennessee 298 6. Florida 232
7. Louisville 209.5 8. California 202.5
9. Michigan 196 10. NC State 164
Based on qualifying times and diving scores, Texas was expected to score 114 points more than Stanford.
In a story written before tonight's finals:
"Coming into the meet, Texas had a substantial psych sheet advantage over Stanford. We scored out the swimming psych sheet and had Texas projected to place second behind Virginia with 390.5 points. Stanford was seeded fourth with 333. At the conclusion of the Zone diving meets two weeks later, we scored the diving psych sheets and found that Texas was in position to add another 58.5 points on the boards, while Stanford projected to score 2.
Texas – 449
Stanford – 335

Well done! One wonders what would have happened without the NIL transfer portal, but peaking at the right time and outperforming expectations to win second place in the first year of cross-country conference craziness is definitely setting the bar high for future ACC seasons. With a 1-2 punch, maybe the ACC is the new swimming power conference.

Yes, totally great. Some good coaching here bringing the younger swimmers along.

The World Championships are just underway in Singapore. Torri Huske DNS for the 100 butterfly heats. The commentators on Peacock said there was a food poisoning outbreak at the USA team training camp in Phuket a few days ago.

Do I recall that for the Olympics, the team’s food was flown in? I guess this wasn’t the case for this event.
Claire Weinstein also scratched the 400 Free (Katie Ledecky led the qualifiers with a 4:01)
A
post by the team said Huske would concentrate on the 400 Free Relay rather than swim both the 100 Fly and the relay in the same day.
Manuel anchored the US Women's 400 Free Relay in the prelims, but with a slow time (still, the US qualified first). SwimSwam supposed it might be that she also was recovering from the illness (from the training camp in Thailand) or because she was saving energy for the finals (4AM PDT Sunday, I think) in case she has to swim for Huske.

On the first night, Ledecky finished 3rd in the 400Fr and the US finished 2nd in the 400 Free Relay.
Last night, Ledecky won the 1500 in 15:26, 6 seconds off her world record but 4 seconds better than her 2024 Olympic gold, 5 seconds ahead of 2nd, 15 seconds ahead of 3rd
RE: 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships -
Nobadeer - 07-29-2025
I just watched the replay of the W 1500. Ledecky swam one of her fastest times, yet won by "only" 5 seconds. High quality final. She blazed out to 4:02 in the first 400, then 4:08 for the next 400, then a 4:09, and finally a 3:07 for the final 300, helped by 30.2 for the last 50.
She held 40 to 41 strokes per lap. A decent rec swimmer might hold ~ 40 strokes per 50 meter lap, for a couple or few hundred meters - at half her speed!

Huske and Manuel swam in the heats televised tonight in the US (Weds. morning in Singapore) of the 4x100 mixed medley, in which the US won gold at the Paris Olympics . . . and the US quartet did not even qualify for the final. Huske's butterfly leg was ~ *3 seconds* slower than her personal best. Ouch. This meet so far is a mitigated disaster for Team USA. Blame it on the food poisoning at Phuket.

SwimSwam was predicting that the US should easily win that relay. Ouch
RE: 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships -

The "Neutral Athletes B" team (aka Russia . . . ) ending up winning the gold in the mixed medley relay. Former LSJU swimmer Taylor Ruck swam anchor for Canada, which won bronze.
RE: 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships -

Stanford M swimmer, Henry McFadden, swam a good leadoff leg for Team USA in the 4x200 freestyle relay. USA were in gold medal position going into the anchor leg, but got overtaken and ended up 4th.
Huske impressively won bronze in the 100 freestyle. She reportedly was among the sickest of the US swimmers after the food poisoning incident.
Manuel swam in the heats of the 4x100 mixed freestyle relay. She might be replaced by Huske for the final.
Regan Smith, who spent a McEnroe-esque single year on the Farm before turning pro, keeps winning many silver medals, just as in the Paris Olympics. She and another LSJU 1-and-done, Curzan, swim in the 200 backstroke final early Saturday morning USA time.
And Ledecky will have her 800 m freestyle showdown vs. McIntosh of Canada.

Surprised no one mentioned this yet...

Ledecky won the 800 m free by fractions of a second. McIntosh actually fell to third despite gaining a brief lead after 700 m.
