WBB: Stanford 87 Georgia Tech 82 - 81alum - 02-28-2025

Preview:

Well, here we are, at what may well be the last home game of the year.  Senior day.  Brooke Demetre and Elena Bosgana are expected to graduate and leave after the year.  Four Five recruits are coming in, and so two others we don't know will be leaving.  (We have 14 on the roster now, so only 4 have to depart to make room for the incoming class.)  Nothing has been announced, but most of us expect it to be Lauren Green, a former walk-on, and Jzaniya Harriel.  Green has another year of eligibility, but I imagine nothing was promised her as far as four years is concerned.  Harriel is a redshirt junior, meaning she has had her four years on scholarship but has another year of eligibility.  I would guess that she graduates and takes a grad transfer somewhere else.  All pure speculation on my part.  I suppose if someone else has let the coaching staff know they are leaving that Harriel could stay another year.  Harriel has had an injury-plagued career but at one point was our best three point shooter--outshooting Hannah jump by percentage.  As always, it will be sad to see the four go, but none of them were four year starters, and so the fans probably did not get too firmly attached to any of them.

I hope that our seniors bring their best play to this game.  We need the "good" Bosgana and the "good" Demetre.  Georgia Tech is a better team than any we have played in a while.  Massey has them at 34--with Cal at 33, for comparison.  Cal did just beat them 79-65.  GT is 21-8, 9-8 in conference, and 5-4 on the road, although they have lost 3 in a row.  Massey predicts a Stanford win 73-66.  Georgia Tech's best win was over North Carolina.  Their worst loss was at Clemson.

Just like Miami, this trip will be the first time they have played outside the Atlantic time zone this year--except for their Hawaii tournament last fall.

GT has three leading scorers, all averaging 13-16 points.  Kara Dunn leads at 16.  She is a 5'11" junior guard in her third year at GT.  She hits about 38% of her treys, and treys are nearly half of her shots.

Dani Carnegie is their second leading scorer but has not started a game.  She is a 5'9" freshman guard who shoots it from all over at 40%.

Toni Morgan, the third leading scorer, is a 5'9" junior guard.  She is not much of a three point shooter but makes 40% of her shots, almost all from inside.

Just looking at those three give me match-up nightmares.  Three speedy little guards who all have to be guarded closely.  Not our forte.  They have bench depth too, and in addition to Carnegie they can bring out a 5'4" freshman.

While GT puts a swarm of small guards on the floor, they do have some height.  Ariadna Termis is 6'6" and plays about half of each game.

GT is coached by venerable Nell Fortner, who has been head coach at Purdue, the Indiana Fever, and Auburn before Georgia Tech.

OK Bob, so we guessed right on Harriel...probably.  So many seniors go through senior day and then come back.  Anna Wilson did it three times, I think.  And maybe Lauren Green comes back as a walk on.

Any way you look at it, we will be a more talented team next year, but an even younger team than we are now.  So very, very, young in an era where the serious opposition seems to put multiple grad transfers on the floor.  This rebuilding is going to take a while.

So we have 14 now, -3 seniors = 11.  11+5 = 16.  One more player must lose a scholarship or leave.  Probably Green, unless someone else portals out....

Well the good news on grad transfers is no more covid years. That’s over now

Very true. I honestly don't mind it, though - I like the idea of Kate getting to build the program in her own image, and essentially a complete roster overhaul within a year of taking over certainly hastens that.

And while this season has definitely not gone the way we've wanted it to, I've been really happy to see the player development improvement in Clardy, Ijiwoye, and more recently, Ogden. What had concerned me at the midpoint of the season was that it didn't seem like our players were getting any better apart from Agara. Assuming all our underclassmen return, a roster that features those four plus Heal (who remains, statistically, by far our purest shooter, and who has quietly been on target for a 50/50/90 season), plus our incoming class, will really be something fun to build around.

Look at me, the optimist here... Second half of the Miami game was the most fun I've had since early January, so I'm hopeful we can end tomorrow on a good note too.

Muchas gracias to 81alum for doing all the homework on the SWBB opponents throughout the year.
You have provided a very useful lens through which to view the games. While your work has been clearly a labor of love, we fans have been the beneficiaries of your efforts. These times have been difficult for woman’s basketball and college sports in general. That, coupled with the adjustment that Stanford has had to make this year have been exceedingly difficult. Yet, you have been a stabilizing force in keeping the mood upbeat and positive. I appreciate your analysis and tone, plus your willingness to continue to support women’s basketball and our team.
Gracias!

Yes 81 thank you so much. Great previews for us to enjoy

Thank you to everyone who contributes to the women’s basketball board, especially 81 with the analysis that are even better than what is posted on the official Stanford website. It really is a joy of mine coming on here. Win or lose, great season or rough season like we’ve had right now, I look forward to the contributions here! I don’t know what the post season will hold for us… no one really knows when it comes to post season, but I’m hoping there are still quite a few games left because I’m not ready for this season to be over. It’s gone by way too fast!

Thank you to all of you for your insights, esp. 81. I look forward to visiting this site every day, if not more often.

It's been a weird season. I hope it's not over yet. But I'm really excited for next year!

Game is on CW Sports Network on YouTube TV; ESPN app lists it but thinks it starts at 2pm rather than 1pm and so isn’t showing it yet.

I live in SoCal.  In my area the game is pre-empted by a live pre-Oscar show for CW on Spectrum cable.  I can't believe  they think Oscar red carpet stuff is more important than Stanford WBB.

We started the game in a match-up zone. I can't remember if that's ever happened before.

End of Q3. 62-65.
Too close for comfort

72-65 after 3. Both teams playing hard and smart. GA Tech already has a first-round bye in the ACC tournament.

Way too close.

50 points in the paint for Stanford.

Take the W.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Georgia Tech, Sunday 1pm; preview and game thread - Hieronymus - 03-02-2025

Good
- the offense was pretty great. Layup after layup on drives, backdoor cuts and even some post ups.
- they kept turnovers contained - only 10 today.
- best game Stevenson has played.
- they gutted out the win.

Bad
- obviously the defense and defensive rebounding including a 29 point second quarter and 11 offensive rebounds for Tech.
- perimeter defense especially has to get better. If you can’t stop the three and can’t stop the drive, well that isn’t good.
- they gave up big leads twice - and did it in really short periods of time both times.

That Morgan sprained ankle probably saved the game.
