Lincoln Riley to USC - BostonCard - 11-28-2021

First reaction: crap!

RE: Lincoln Riley to USC - Austroturf - 11-28-2021

Wow, big surprise!  Wonder what motivated that move?  Better weather?  If you look at recent years, Oklahoma has been by far the more successful program.

Shows the U$C brand name still has a lot of influence.
Either that or they are paying him a sum that would make Musk and Bezos envious.

RE: Lincoln Riley to USC - BostonCard - 11-28-2021

Beat you to it.  And I had the same reaction as you did.

I think the move is interesting.  Riley must believe that he has an easier path to winning in the PAC-12 than in the SEC, but I am surprised nonetheless.  Oklahoma in the SEC should be able to amass ginormous amounts of money, and I can only believe that some USC donors just opened their pocketbooks.

The only thing you can hope for is that Riley is much better continuing an excellent program that he took over from Bob Stoops, than he is in building one.

So, I wonder if Oklahoma makes a run at Franklin, who has experience in the SEC at Vandy.

RE: Lincoln Riley to USC - JustAnotherFan - 11-28-2021

Not surprised at all. Lincoln Riley doesn't want to deal with a super competitive conference. He likes winning it virtually every year and rightfully believes he can do so at USC given the quality of the Pac-12. I think this is good for the conference given the lackluster product it has been producing.

RE: Lincoln Riley to USC - BostonCard - 11-28-2021

A further add, Riley apparently was LSU’s first choice as well, so say what you want about USC, they beat out two premier schools for Riley.

Wow! Maybe Pac becomes more relevant? Didn't Franklin just sign a big long term K?

RE: Lincoln Riley to USC - BostonCard - 11-28-2021

Also, no west coast ties that I can find.  He’s from Texas, played at Texas Tech, and coached at Texas Tech, east Carolina, and Oklahoma.

Yeah, good find.

Makes Shaw look cheap in comparison.  Also, I didn’t realize Penn State finished 7-5.  That’s gotta be disappointing for a team expected to challenge Ohio State and Michigan for the BigTen title.

I did not realize that Santa Clara was re-starting their football program!  I bet the Domers are not too happy!

RE: Lincoln Riley to USC - CardinalSagehen - 11-28-2021

I think we’re still competing with SC for what would be the top recruit in the current class, David Bailey. The elimination of uncertainty at SC and the hiring of a marquee coach might seal our fate.  I hope not.

RE: Lincoln Riley to USC - French Rage - 11-28-2021

USC can now achieve their dream of getting blown out in a semifinal game.

at roughly $3M per win, no one makes Shaw look undercompensated.

I wonder if many Sooners will enter the transfer portal to follow him to USC.....

FWIW there is a rumor out there that Lincoln Riley expects to be the HC of the Dallas Cowboys within two years. Supposedly Jerry Jones wanted him earlier, but the football staff talked him out of it because Riley was too young and inexperienced. This move is a bit of a safety play. He broadens his experience base. Things aren't looking too rosy in Oklahoma in the immediate future so he may lose a bit of luster if he stays there. At U$C, he will be "rebuilding" so that if they suddenly start winning he is a genius and if they don't it is not unexpected. He gets lots of money and moves back home after two years.

No way of knowing how accurate this is, but it is certainly an interesting possibility.

Even mid-tier teams in Power 5 conferences are paying $5 million per year before bonuses, so that's why I always found it curious that many were upset about the idea that 2 time Rose Bowl winner Coach Shaw getting $9 million, especially when one remembers the $9 million included deferred salary from earlier years and possibly included bonuses for multiple Rose Bowl wins and even a top 5 finish.

Doesn't really matter how much Shaw is getting I guess.  For a school to get a CFP/NY6 level coach and keep that coach for more than one season probably will cost $8+ million per year in a 5 year contract with a lot of that guaranteed.   And if your school lacks the opportunity to land easy promotion money (see. Saban and AFLAC) then it likely will be $10 million or more per year soon.

LSU was set to pay big money for a coach, reportedly in the $12-$13 million range.   I can only guess USC is going to pay something in that same range.  It is really hard to believe Oklahoma will thrive in the first few years in the SEC, so I think the coach made a great move.   He should be able to convince a wave of LA based recruits that HE knows what it takes to get to the CFP even if the Pac-12 is clueless.
