Thorough thrashing - gailtate - 09-12-2021

Looks like football's fun again. Sign me up: I'll admit I was deadass wrong about this squad -- and give credit where it's due: Shaw picked his team up off last week's mat, went to work, invaded L.A. and put on a clinic: offense, defense and special teams. And, at last, Stanford has a bona-fide, star-in-the-making under center. Not since Andrew Luck have I seen a true field general (apologies to Kevin Hogan) who can do it all. Hope he hangs around a couple of years. Squad stays stays healthy, no reason why another six or seven wins can't be notched. This was a team win, spearheaded by coach. Hats off.

Welcome back.  Thought you were lost to the dark side.

Good Kool-aid, and I hope you are right. However, one good game doesn't qualify a player as a "star in the making" IMHO. It does show he has the potential to be great. Let's see how the next 5 or 6 games pan out before we decide how good he is. No question he was "on" last night. If this is the norm, yes, he will be a star. However, Tavita beat SC on some great throws (and catches). Wonderful game, but he wasn't exactly a star.

The final result may have you misremembering. I don't have the stats but Tavita had an AWFUL game, with resurrection at the end. Doesn't make it any less wonderful, though.

RE: Thorough thrashing - fullmetal - 09-12-2021

The team is who their results say they are...and last week, the team's results were bad.  I don't think anyone should feel bad for accepting those results at face value.  It's on the team (coaches incl) to make sure that the KSU game/effort never happens again.

True. Tavita was 11 of 30. On the last drive he was money. The question is, was he good or was he lucky. I think lucky, and that is why I don't want to anoint any QB based on a one game sample. Show me a season and then it isn't luck. Dioesn't mean McKee isn't actually great, but it is too soon to know.

RE: Thorough thrashing - Spiny_Norman - 09-12-2021

Some random postgame thoughts.

Nathaniel Peat is a better fit with the Stanford offense right now than Austin Jones. He should be starting at RB. Filkins should be getting more touches too.

Peat also looks dangerous on kickoff return. I think that he will break one at some point during the season.

Who was the staffer/assistant coach running with Peat down the sidelines on his TD run?

What happened to Bonner? Did he scratch before kickoff? Wyrick stepped up big time. Thought he played well from what I could see from section 203 (100 yards away from the action).

Stanford had no sacks and only 1 TFL (the incredible play by DWP who dragged down the SC RB by his jersey with one hand while he was otherwise locked up with an SC lineman). No penetration into the backfield. Playmakers on defense need to emerge among the front 7 but I don't know who it might be. Disappointing that we have seen nothing so far from the OLBs.

Stanford is almost at the end of a run of 7 consecutive road games carrying over from last season. They are 5-1 in those games with one remaining. Pretty amazing.

After everything that we have been through over the last 18+months, I cannot really put into words what it was like to be in the Coliseum with like-minded Stanford fans (not very many, maybe 1000 total including the football parents, but they were there) and experience joy and elation again.

More of this please.

That is awesome!  KBK leads the C-House chant.  Fun to see joy in the locker room.

RE: Thorough thrashing - chrisk - 09-12-2021

The team has another week to tune up before finally returning home to face 2 teams that look to be tougher than USC (#4 Oregon and #13 UCLA. After game 5, we’ll have a better idea of the team’s upside.

RE: Thorough thrashing - Hurlburt88 - 09-12-2021

was great to see DWP's TFL get the "best hands" notoriety on Sports Center this morning!

C'mon, if you can't just dance around and celebrate a beat down of fricken SC, you need to re-evaluate your approach.  It doesn't mean Stanford is a CFP candidate but who cares?  We just kicked SC's ass.  Revel in it and wait to see what the season will reveal.

Cheers,

Strength coaches Cullen Carroll and Sam Contorno

RE: Thorough thrashing - jfredmuggs - 09-12-2021

One reason there were no sacks is that we were rushing three and dropping eight on a regular basis. That’s not strategy I would have picked, but that’s why I am a useless old fart and Shaw is making the big bucks.

RE: Thorough thrashing - BostonCard - 09-12-2021

You’d have thought it would lead to more success on the ground for USC, but they only averaged 5.6 ypc, which is not bad, but not great considering they had an empty box to run into.

You don't need more than a one game sample to conclude a few things about McKee:  (i) he can be incredibly accurate, (ii) he can make a lot of difficult throws, and (iii) he has command of the O and when/where to get rid of the ball.  Those are 3 key ingredients to stardom.

I was the first person to say it is probably unrealistic to expect McKee to be this accurate and have this kind of success week-in and week-out; however, I feel pretty confident that McKee has "it" - which is what Luck and Elway had.

Maybe that's a misread.  We'll see . . .

Thanks for that tweet. That's a dynamic young man right there. A natural leader.

Yes, and thank God their "brain trust" didn't see that and react. As I have said all along, they should just run right at us until we make them stop. They are such an "air raid" team now that on principle (am I using that word in regard to USC) they just won't run, run, run. As the announcers said, USC has 5 backs that could start for any team in the country. Allowing for a bit of overstatement, they are for sure good enough to run against the defense we were playing. 5.6 yards per carry will get you lots of first downs.

And, behold, the transfer rule turns its head and shows the ugly side of its face.  If you don't keep all of those self-entitled prima donna backs and receivers happy, they will enter the transfer portal and seek more playing time elsewhere.  After all, they are all going to be drafted in the 1st round and sign big fat NFL deals.  If they don't get their touches it will affect their signing bonuses.  Team loyalty be damned!

RE: Thorough thrashing - BostonCard - 09-13-2021

Also, we have Jones, Peat, EJ Smith, and Filkins. That is not a bad stable of running backs to have, and, as far as I know, none are hankering to transfer.  It's all about each player knowing their role.
