Wow playing great up 12.
Trivia time Mosert with a rushing TD in 6 straight games. The 49er record is 7 by whom?
Niners - Seahawks -
BostonCard - 12-29-2019
Niners were inches from blowing a 12 point lead with 5 min, but a delay of game after a spiked ball gave Seattle second and goal from the six instead of the 1, and they gain four yards.

They gained 5 yards and 11.5 inches. The Niners catch a break.
Still think Wilson was over the line on one of the TD passes, can't believe it wasn't reviewed or challenged.

Wilson was over the line except it has to be his whole body and his back foot was behind the line

So the Niners survived their failure to secure the tie in their earlier meeting.

Goes to show that even a super bowl winning NFL coach can have his team with a delay of game. The issue of course is that this was a very high leverage situation. He went from second and goal from the one foot line to first and goal from the six, and it was the difference between a five yard gain being an easy touchdown and it being inches short. This one did cost the Seahawks the game.

I believe the technical.l term is BULLSHIT.
Anyone else screaming at Shanahan to go for it on 4th and 1 from their own 30 beside me? Such a surrender monkey, stupid decision to punt the ball there. You win the game by holding the ball. Or at least you make Sea use all their timeouts if you make it there an win with another first down. Even if you fail, if Sea does score, you get the ball back with time to score, like at New Orleans.
Was also dumb to go for 2 late in 3rd and then not go for 2 after 4th Q TD. Shanahan is a great coach, but his game management skills are very questionable.

So true. That was my first thought upon hearing about the final score - the game should NOT have had this much on the line for SF (though perhaps Seattle doesn't lay an egg last week if they needed the W to keep this last game meaningful).
BTW, I disagree that we'll see a rematch. Seattle is vulnerable on the road. But then again, maybe the 'Niners won't hold up their end of the bargain. Really hope D. Ford is back for the playoffs.

I don’t know. If it was Stanford’s defense, I’d say sure, but the forty niner defense is such that the difference between having to go 73 yards for a touchdown and having to go 30 yards for a touchdown is significant. When Seattle started their drive, the Niners had a 77% chance of winning (per ESPN), that was down to a 58% probability of winning when Seattle had a first and ten at the SF 47. After picking up half the distance on a 24 yard pass, Seattle was actually favored to win. So, figure a first and ten at the thirty outs the odds at 50/50.
I think the math works out in favor of going for it for most fourth down conversion probabilities, but I’m not going to try and solve for the break even point. The NFL being what it is, though, I bet almost every coach punts in that situation.

The game still would have had a lot on the line. A 12-3-1 NFC West champion still has to play a wild card game, so they wouldn’t have benefited at all from the tie if they had lost today, except for being able to host the wild card. Winning today gave them home field advantage throughout the playoffs, and that was the case regardless of whether they lost or tied against Seattle the first time.
Now a win, in overtime, against Seattle last time would have let the Niners clinch home field last week, and allowed them to rest their starters.
So, even though it was not at all clear at the time, in retrospect, playing for the win wound up being the right call. At the time, though, the loss was more likely to hurt them than the tie was to help, and there was no way to anticipate that in advance, so at the time going for the tie was absolutely the right thing to do.

I still hate math BC. The Jebbies fixed my grades so I could remain eligible. Similar to the Shaw Sucks conglomeration thread I propose to put all math responses to whatever in its own conglomerate thread.
Screw math.

Check, check and check. I found myself wondering whether he should do those things or whether he panicked.
Incidentally...they will probably play the Seahawks in the semis. The Eagles lost to the Seahawks 17-9 in week 12...the Eagles had four turnovers, two fumbles and two INTs. Wentz has been strong, but I think the Eagles have the longest injury list.

Hard to tell from the only replay angle they showed. Looked like his back foot was in the air, so tough to tell exactly where it was. For such an important play, certainly worthy of an official replay. A couple of different looks from NBC would have been nice, too.

I screamed at the TV to go for it. Your defense is getting creamed, so worst case scenario is you don't get it, just let the Seahawks score immediately, and get the ball back with 1:40ish and 2 TOs to tie/win.

A big angle in favor of going for it is the fact the 49ers would have only needed a field goal had they been stopped on fourth down before giving up a touchdown. A touchdown by Seattle would have made the score 27-26. If you stop the two-point conversion, all you need to win is a field goal. If Seattle converts, you can still play for the win by trying to score a touchdown, but you also have the option of kicking the field goal and forcing overtime. By going for it, you can effectively win the game right there, but even if it backfires you still have a legitimate chance to win it.
