WBB: Stanford 78 Tennessee 51 -

Preview:
There have been so many great Tennessee games played at Maples, and this year may be another. Tennessee has never quite recovered from the retirement of Pat, but they are now looking formidable again under first year coach Kellie Harper. Harper was a point guard for Pat in the 1990s and won three national championships. She then went on to a successful coaching career as head coach of North Carolina State and then Missouri State (quite successful in both places) before coming home to Tennessee. We just played against a Kelly Harper team, by the way, when we met Missouri State in the sweet 16 last year, and prevailed 55-46. But that team was scrappy and played good defense--with players a whole lot shorter and less quick than the Tennessee players.
This year, Tennessee is 8-1, 49th in the computer rankings (Massey) and 23rd in the AP. Their lone loss was to Texas who we play next, and their best win is probably over Notre Dame--which doesn't mean as much as usual. The Tennessee fan boards have little confidence in their offense but a lot in their defense--their fans think their only chance is to keep us in a low scoring slugfest and hold us in the 60s. That is probably based off of their experience in the Texas loss. They lost to Texas 66-60 but held Texas to 36% shooting and outrebounded Texas by 12. While defense and rebounding are strengths of Tennessee, they have a negative turnover and negative steals rate--despite playing against mostly inferior opponents. But they do average 7 blocks a game.
Their five starters will most probably be:
00 Rennia Davis, a 6'2" junior guard/forward who is their scoring leader at 17ppg, including a few treys at 29%.
20 Tamari Key, a 6'5" freshman center scoring 9 ppg
25 Jordan Horsten, a 6'2" freshman guard scoring 9ppg
13 Jazmine Massengil, a 6'0 sophomore guard scoring 7 points with a 4:1 assist to turnover ratio but with poor 3-pt shooting
21 Lou Brown, a 6'3" redshirt senior forward from Australia, scoring 4 ppg.
All six of their bench players get significant minutes, but none of them get a lot of points.
Tennessee lost Zaay Green, their second leading scorer, to an ACL after just two games, and their offense has not quite been the same since.
Tennessee makes 5 treys a game, but at only a 28% clip--so they wind up taking a lot of trys for 15 ppg. They prefer to drive on the basket
It sounds as if driving into the paint against them is problematic--they block a lot and have depth at center. Key has 18 blocks already. We are going to need our own shooting to heat up, and Haley's mid range jumpers may be very important in stretches.
Overview:
Tennessee came in with a vaunted defense, but our defense was more effective and theirs failed to hold us under our average. We held Tennessee to 28% shooting, blocked 9 shots, and held their star Rennia Davis to 25% shooting. Meanwhile 10 of our players scored, led by Williams with 19 (who also joined the 1000 point club tonight.)
Flow of the Game:
Tennessee started well, with their star Rennia Davis--a 29% three point shooter--getting hot and making two treys and another field goal for 8 quick point early in the first quarter. Lexie was defending her but not too successfully at first. Tennessee took a 12-10 lead. But Davis picked up two early fouls and had to sit the rest of the quarter. The game turned around immediately and we went on a 10-0 run to take a 20-12 lead, with a couple of undefendable Prechtel jumpers from the elbow being particularly notable.
Tennessee could not afford to keep Davis out, so they took the risk and played her for the whole 2nd quarter. She did not pick up another foul, but she also was scoreless in the quarter. The quarter was Tennessee's best offensively--but Lexie, Williams, and Jump answered, and we finished the half up 34-24.
The game was essentially put away in the third. Williams clearly ended her drought and began to hit treys, layups, but she also assisted a trey by Prechtel and a trey by Jump. Prectel and Hull made additional treys late in the quarter, and our hockey-line changes were visibly exhausting the Tennessee players. They never gave up, but when Prechtel's trey extended out lead to 19 late in the quarter, you could see the body language change.
Tennessee continue to fight in the fourth quarter, but Prechtel assisted a trey by Fingall that extended the lead to 20, Jones cut through traffic for two layups, and even Brown and Wilson got in some feel-good (and very pretty) scores as the quarter wore on. The Anna Wilson straight-down-the-middle-of-the-floor layup with no one stopping her was the period at the end of the sentence.
Performances:
We shot 43% to their 28% and that tells most of the story.
We made 11 treys to their five.
We slightly out rebounded them--and rebounding has been their biggest strength. However, we gave them 19 O-boards resulting in 18 second chance points. Our inability to box out was probably our weakest link tonight.
We had 13 turnovers to their 11. Both teams have been turnover prone, we cut down on ours but so did they.
14 of our 29 baskets were assisted, 7 of their 20. This more than anything shows how we were able to make them one-dimensional.
Williams certainly gets the game ball. She led with 19 points and 7 assists. And she was at a massive height disadvantage the whole game.
Lexie and Prechtel each nearly had double doubles. Lexie with 11 points and 9 rebounds, Prechtel with 10 points and 8 rebounds.
I thought Prechtel had a simply outstanding game--many of those rebounds were contested and she fought hard for them. She also had 3 assists and 3 blocks, and at 2/5 three pointers and her shots from the elbow she was critical to our offense.
Many other players made contributions--this was even more of a "team effort" than usual. Jones had a quieter stat line than normal, with 8 points, but she also spend a lot of time defending Rennia Davis and her contributions on defense should not be underestimated. Belibi fouled out with 7 points, but more importantly she literally pushed around bigger Tennessee players in the paint and helped to exhaust them. Fingall was 2/4 fromt three point range, grabbed 6 rebounds, and was part of the "wear them down" defense.
Conclusion:
Very little to complain about here. It was about time for Williams to have an outstanding game, and she did. And it was about time for Prechtel to shine, and she did.
This team just gets better, it is playing better and seems more mature by the game. But now it is of to the first genuine road trip to hostile territory. Sunday's game at Texas will be a different kind of test--and a necessary one. In the meantime, congratulations on our best all-around performance of the year--so far. It feels like we have learned a lot since Gonzaga.

While we have a couple days before the Tennessee game, I thought I would ask my fellow Cardboarders, what are your thoughts on Jerome so far this season? She had that great game in the exhibition against Beijing Normal and the general feeling it sounds like coming into the season was that she got stronger, but didn't lose any speed, yet it hasn't translated into results during these first few games yet.
She made a couple bad decisions last night (not that she was the only one), but felt from the broadcast looked a little lost from my limited vantage point watching on TV and I feel like has largely been a non-factor so far this season. Thoughts?
Also, I would be remissed if I didn't point out that Haley Jones captured her second Pac-12 Freshman of the Week title, just the beginning of all of the collegiate accolades she will be receiving over the next few seasons.

if fran had played the same 34 minutes as haley (instead of 20), and continued scoring and rebounding at the same pace, she would have had 22 points and 14 rebounds - likely good enough for freshman of the week herself!

Great summary and analysis! Sounds like Tenn is a bit like us with respect to having talented young players with high potential but still subject to youthful mistakes. What may help us most is the maturity of our experienced players and even more so that in terms of quickness and athleticism we can compete with anyone, something we haven’t had so much overall in the past.
Their coach sounds really good too, but my money is on Tara.

Tara has given Jerome good minutes over the past two-plus years. And Alyssa has developed into a good player with the ability to start in many games. Unfortunately for her, she has to compete with more skilled, assertive underclass ballplayers for minutes. She should be a reliable sixth-player in her remaining years on The Farm and earn our praise.

Alyssa strikes me as the ultimate tweener who does not quite have the skill set to be an effective stretch four. She's not quite big and strong enough to be a rim protector or top notch low post defender and rebounder. She's also not quite quick enough and skilled enough to live on the perimeter. She's an excellent shooter and passer for her size, but in absolute terms, she's fairly average. She's a great glue player or complimentary player and if her shot is going down from three, she can cause matchup problems. Think of Kayla Pederson lite. There is definitely a role for her on this team, but I'd rather give our other bigs some of Alyssa's PT in order to accelerate their development. When Maya comes back, it will be interesting to see how PT gets re-allocated.

What fascinates me about this team is its versatility. Jones, the Hulls and Carrington can all play multiple positions and roles and that gives Tara so many different matchup possibilities to explore.

Ditto that. Thanks 81A for the factual and insightful commentary. Looking forward to tonight's game. (Though Maples is definitely missing something with the LSJUMB absent - at least that was my reaction during the women's game against tOSU).

Thanks to Malcolm over at the FBC for finding this video--a condensed version of the Tennessee win over Notre Dame:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-fFUEZho9A
Tennessee really is a scary looking team--their tallest in history. The height is not that abnormal with their "bigs"--at 6'5" Prectel can match up with their freshman center. But it is that all their guards are tall, too--6'2" at the 2 and 3. 6' at pg. This is definitely a game where we could use Lacie. Williams will almost certainly be defending players 4-6 inches taller than she is.
It is also interesting to see Sniezek in that video. She is doing well on a highly depleted Notre Dame team.

I'm not sure why but all along I've had a feeling this was the game we were most likely to lose. I feel like the Vols have something to prove and although we are the better coached team, 81Alum is right - they have a ton of physical talent that, if it's on, can do a lot of damage one-on-one. The key will be our defense - if we can play enough helpside defense, I think we can prevail, but I think this will be our toughest test of the OSU-Tenn-Texas trio of post-finals, pre-holidays games. And yes - Hulls will be key here, as they are probably out best helpside defenders. (assuming Carrington is not back). Go Cardinal!

It is pretty clear that with Rennia Davis being Tennessee's dominant scorer, and with Tara's scouting report defense that focuses on forcing a team to score with their lesser players--the focus tonight for our defense will be taking Rennia Davis away. But how? She is a quick 6'2" guard who can shoot from three, the midrange, and take it to the rim. Williams and Wilson give up a lot of height to her, Lexie gives up 2 inches but maybe she is the defender we use--or do we put Jones on Davis?
Then you look at Jordan Horston, the other 6'2" guard, but she shoots threes at 36%. The three point shot is not Tennessee's favorite thing to do, but if we focus on Davis we have to have someone tall enough and agile enough to keep Horston from heating up at the three point line.
I really wonder who Williams will defend. Probably Massengill since she is the "shortest" at 6' and does not take many three point shots--so is less a threat to shoot over Williams. But Massengill is long for a 6 footer and can drive--and Williams has sometimes had problems keeping people in front of her. I'll be watching early to see how well Williams can defend her mark.
The Tennessee fans, by the way, are worried about Williams. Small, speedy guards apparently have given Tennessee problems--so on offense Williams may be an asset. However, as for point guard duties, it is difficult for someone as short as Williams is to made good entrance passes against such a tall, lengthy team. Maybe we will see Jones at point for more time than normal.
The key to the game might come down to how well Prectel, Belibi, and Fingall do on offense against the Tennessee 6'5" center. If we can score inside--something no one else has really been able to do--then everything else will open up too. Tamari Key is a freshman just like Prechtel; they have a 6'4" junior center and another 6'5" freshman center backing her up. Can we evade the blocks and get enough room to maneuver inside for a credible offensive threat down low? Or will we be forced to stick to breakaways and jumpshots? I bet we will find out early in the game.
I also think at some point we will see Tennessee "go big" and maybe put two centers in, sag and clog the paint, and dare us to make treys. If we have an "off" night shooting the three, then Tennessee may stick with the plan and we would likely lose. If Jump and company start making 3s then Tennessee will clog the paint less and we'll get back to a more normal game. So making our three point shots early on will be crucial. A cold shooting night would be fatal.

This gameday thing is pretty frustrating at times, at least to me. But if you go to that link, then click on the down arrow next to Tennessee, you'll be taken to a menu with roster and stats. I print out the roster, then flip the page in the printer and print the stats, so I have it all on one page. They aren't making this all that easy or intuitive, imho, but it does work once you've figured it out.

I'm not sure what to make of a slim 10 point lead with Davis for Tennessee sitting for some portions after she was hot early due to fouls. Turnovers continue to be a problem for this team, so hopefully, we'll get our act together and start hitting some treys and layups while we're at it.
