Track & Field -
BobK - 05-23-2019
The regionals started at 12:30 with Stanford at Sacramento State
Weight events are outside the stadium and first race at 4:30. Nice weather mid to high 70s.
Top 12 from each of the two regionals advance to the finals in Austin.
Williams automatically advanced as no multi events this weekend
Both the men and women are picked 6th in the latest update

Bob, any chance of an upset to actually win a title? It seems like we lack the strength in the sprints and in the field events (except javelin) to have a realistic chance to challenge, but am I misreading things?

No chance at all. A couple of teams way out of our league

Ah, well, figured as much. Hopefully we can get some individual titles and overperform our seed, if nothing else!

Yeah, seems like track is a bit like swimming, where really it is a two or three team race and the favorite is going to win most of the time.

Sad we can't even qualify one 1500 meter runner. While I know it is possible to win the NCAA based on distance alone, the chances are generally slim and close to impossible. When you consider you have the 100, 200, 400 LJ, TJ, 4x100, 4x400, 800 and the 1500, all races where speed kills, and we have no one who may score in these events. Sprints are events where you can double, or even triple. Run the 100, 200 and get some points in the LJ or TJ. It isn't like we haven't had guys who could do this. Why are we so short handed in the sprints? Are we making no real effort to recruit these guys? Are we viewed as the last place to go if you are a sprinter? Seems odd we have so few.

My first response would be are you kidding ? Lol.
I think Larry Questad in the 60s or James Lofton in the 70s were the last stanford NCAA sprint point scorers
The women 12-15 or so years ago had several sprint scorers.
Our top 2 milers are better in the 5K so that’s where we are. One is sub 4 the other right at 4.
However our men set the world record for the 4x 100 yard relay in 1965

Both to Austin
Ostberg the top non qualifier although time wise ran faster than anyone in the other race
That’s 14 to Austin
