Jesse Burkett and OL issues -
OutsiderFan - 08-09-2018
New Rivals story says Burkett isn't practicing, still recovering from knee injury in Spring, and that if he doesn't return in a couple weeks, he won't start the season.
So I have questions. Do any of y'all know what the injury is and when specifically it happened? What are your thoughts on the other Center possibilities should Burkett not return?
The same article mentioned Foster Sarell being set at Tackle. Apparently they don't want him at Guard unless an emergency. And from the sounds of it, he may push Hall out of the starting RT spot. At the same time, they are working Hamilton and Wilson at LG, but Fanaika seems to be the preferred option when he returns from something keeping him out. Kind of odd to see Hamilton's weight reported at 287, and Wilson is only listed at 273, both light for a Guard, especially considering Herbig is what, 340? Fanaika is 315?
There is an open practice on Sunday. Hopefully someone here will attend and give observations.

Yep, seeing both Burkett and Fanaika out, and both apparently the coaches' preference for their spots, brings a new set of concerns about the OL. That's 40% of our regular line in question.
One mitigating bit is that Chaffin was already the short yardage center, so he at least has experience working with Costello. Presumably he is behind Burkett particularly in pass blocking. I don't know much about the other guys apparently competing for the job (Dalman and Powell).
The weights are at least slightly interesting. Both Hamilton and Wilson were listed as significantly heavier on last year's official roster: Wilson at 285#, Hamilton at 301#. Presumably that is actually a good development if they got rid of fat, but there is no way to know without seeing/talking to them.
The other item that might make this development not hurt quite as much as it could is that center and LG are probably the least set along the line. Herbig, Little, and Hall all have a good track record and trajectory from last year, and seem very set in their positions. There was already a battle for the LG position and as I noted above Burkett split time more than any other OL last year (at least outside of health reasons).
The Rivals article you cite is not behind their paywall, so seems we might as well link it here.

The basic info is available elsewhere as well.

Since it’s even on Facebook it’s Burkett’s knee. It’s been on going and really seems like Garnett’s current problem to me. Hoping for the best
Can’t make the open practice and dinner. Hope someone here does.

Offense line looks like the men's basketball team. A lot talent and not enough spots. The difference is that the OL are game proven.

I did not get from the article the sense that Sarell was going to "push Hall out of the starting RT spot." I don't understand why some still do not believe in Hall. He was great last season; HM All-Pac 12. Now, that is not to say that Sarell will not become better than Hall; perhaps he is better now (he was not last season). It would be quite a testament to Sarell's skill if we sit someone of Hall's ability.

FWIW AT Hall’s jersey was featured on the ‘Remember The Names’ video on the Stanford Twitter feed alongside Holder, JJAW, Love, Alfieri, Okereke and Costello. So, hopefully that means he’s been tearing it up in fall camp.

I thought those names were the captains for the year.

It worries me that one of the few dependable strengths of this team is suddenly in doubt, and not in small measure. C'est la vie.

Reading between the lines on Shaw's comments, my guess is he expects Burkett will return for the USC game. He was asked if it's "possible" Burkett would miss the first two games. Shaw answered by saying "it's possible" in a tone that suggested he didn't really agree it would be two games. When you consider SDSU is a non-conference game and USC is a conference one, this makes a lot of sense.
A 5th year Senior who has started for two seasons simply doesn't need to be participating in August practice or playing in a non-conference game. It makes sense to err on the side of caution. This also gives more reps to the younger backups.
Speaking of that, more reading between more lines of more Shaw comments... It does seem Shaw thinks Dalman is the better long-term answer at Center than Chaffin, but that Chaffin was probably ahead of him to start practices. If Burkett was playing now, Chaffin would be the backup and Dalman getting 3rd team reps. That would slow his development a bit.
As it is, Dalman is getting more reps and increasing his chances of supplanting Chaffin as the #2 Center. Whether he does or not remains to be seen, but it seems Dalman is being given every opportunity to start against SDSU.

Good reading between the lines but I agree that this situation with Burkett is very worrisome. With Burkett we have one of the strongest OLs in the country and therefore, one of the best offenses in the country.
Without an experienced, physical rock anchoring our OL as the “QB” - calling the formations, assignments and then physically competing - we might struggle.

Fanaika has returned to practice and will be given every opportunity to win the starting LG spot. Interestingly, Sarell has been getting reps there.
And, it looks like Dalman has in fact moved ahead of Chaffin to backup Burkett. No word yet on when Burkett returns, but it sure seems like as soon as he does, he starts, no questions asked. Until demonstrated otherwise, I'm going to be REALLY surprised if Burkett isn't starting against USC.

I feel the same way. I have memories of how Stanford abused USC's frosh center in 2012 when Khaled Holmes was injured and unable to play. Stanford had 4 sacks and USC was 0-12 on 3rd down.
I think I am going to be anxious about the line play until Burkett is back in action.

Well, Holmes was injured at Syracuse while U$C was running up the score iirc. That was karma. Let's hope Kevin Carberry has some magic up his sleeve.

I remember how losing Mike McLaughlin cost Stanford a Rose Bowl.

I would say Uso stepping out of bounds when he might have scored and Husak overthrowing a very wide open Pitts were bigger factors along with a one handed Walters.

Lex, that was the opinion of the coaching staff.
