Re: RIP Dennis Green - Hurlburt88 - 07-22-2016

Sad to hear this.  I will always remember him as revitalizing the program, and in particular bringing a toughness.

I still have memories of him walking directly through our lacrosse practices every afternoon. We would all stop while Denny walked through our field.

Re: RIP Dennis Green - Griffins78 - 07-22-2016

Sad to hear, especially at such a young age. I was thrilled he was our coach and continued to follow him through his career.

Sadly, this is probably what most people will remember when Dennis Green comes to mind:

Re: RIP Dennis Green - 81alum - 07-22-2016

My freshman year (1977) I remember my friends talking about this great young running backs coach that Walsh brought in to work with Darrin Nelson.  Hard to believe that since that time his entire career has passed and now the man has passed.

Re: RIP Dennis Green - Spiny_Norman - 07-22-2016

I had watched Stanford football experience middling success in the 10 years prior to Denny Green's hiring as head coach.  Stanford's history was that of a finesse offense that would get pushed around by more physical defenses.  In particular, Stanford could not beat U*S*C.  Between 1976 and 1991, Stanford never beat the T*rojans.  Denny Green convinced his players and then convinced fans like me that the Cardinal could be a smash mouth team.  I loved that attitude and the results.  His teams provided 3 of my favorite memories as a Stanford fan - beating #1 N*otre Dame in 1990, the Revenge of the Play (my all time favorite game) and winning in the Coliseum in 1991 to break the non-winning streak.  When Bowlsby was looking for a replacement for the Ted's Other Buddy, I thought, "He needs to find someone who can bring a mindset like Denny Green."  I hope that he rests in peace.

Well, you know the old saying "You show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser."

Re: RIP Dennis Green - Hurlburt88 - 07-23-2016

Looking further back, he not only built up our program but in the early 80's took a Northwestern team that had a Big 10 losing streak going back years & broke that streak, and I believe was Big 10 coach of the year.

Re: RIP Dennis Green - Nan3cy - 07-23-2016

He was Big 10 coach of the year with a 3-8 record.

The 1990 Big Game will probably always be my favorite game to have seen in person.

Yes!

That's exactly what I just spontaneously shouted in my otherwise empty office when I viewed this video.  Thank you Martyup for posting it.

Geaux Cardinal!

I believe that is Hal Ramey and Bob Murphy on the call.

Nancy, the 1990 Big Game is my all time favorite in-person game too.

That unbelievable finish does not happen if Denny Green plays for the tie after the McCaffrey TD.  Instead he went for a 2 point conversion and the win.  Another example of the attitude he brought to the Stanford program.
